I've played through the first couple chapters of KA2 a few times now (having restarted after some of the patches fixed annoying bugs) and I can't see any rhyme or reason to whether you can avoid battle with Caradoc. Does anyone know the basis for whether Caradoc lets you take Merlin's apprentice in exchange for a couple thousand gold? It doesn't seem to be reputation, amount of gold possessed, or the options you pick during the quest. Sometimes when I've asked Caradoc for the apprentice he refuses outright and battle ensues, other times he pauses for a while and offers to trade for 2000 gold. Anyone know why?
