I'm planning to buy Crusader kings 2 and Stelaris.I found old forum thread saying that non steam version of ck2 can be bought on Gamersgate. https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...-happy-crusader-kings-requiring-steam.598536/ does that refer to https://www.gamersgate.com/ ? I've trouble finding it there. And googling "stellaris non steam" leads only to piracy and instructions how to get mods working in spite of steam. So things I would like to know:
Where can I find non steam versions of those games?
Will buying outside of steam give me access to locked forum sections like mods?
If I buy steam version does it have to be running and connected to internet to play singleplayer? What about multiplayer?
Is it possible to download patches without steam?

There are no non-Steam versions of those games available anywhere. The GG version of CK2 was deprecated some years ago, and they do not sell our games at all any more.

Yes and No, respectively.
Is it possible to download patches without steam?
No.
