1. I am playing England, and a new COT opened in Anglia, then in Karoo, where I have a colony. I have had no competition in either at all. Is there something I need to do diplomatically to open these markets? No one seems p.o.'ed at me, so I have been assuming not, but it seems quite strange, the Flandres COT has plummetted below Anglia in value yet no one competes.

2. As said, I am in my first GC, and it is qoing very well, but I am starting to wonder, prematurely, is there a high score board in this game, and what is the ending like?
 
1) No, the AI nations are simply deciding that it isn't worthwhile to compete in areas where they don't have provinces.

2) Nations 'scores' are kept track of by VPs (victory points). You can see how well you are doing in VPs compared to the other major powers in the first page of the archives, the top five VP nations by pressing F1, and when you quit a game you'll see the top seven nations in overall VPs and in the four subcategories of VPs.
 
Thanks, that helps re the COT. Now a new COT has opened in the everglades controlling most of my North American Trade. It is in Austrian (!) hands. Don't know, guess it was a brother in law deal, my last war (which was some time back) I honored an alliance with the Netherlands and declared war on Spain, marched down and burned the trading post in the Everglades, and then Austria immediately started it up. Anyway, competition is fierce, so could anyone give me some advice on (1) maneuvering Austria into war and (2) getting them to sign a peace if all I do is grab their COT?

No Hall of fame, huh, I always think thats a mistake. This little monkey keeps going back to Civ2 just to see if he can move the names. But there is more than enough here. I have circumnavigated the globe, next I think I'll stay in Europe and see how that game plays!
 
If you have allies that will allow you an access route to the enemy capital a pretty sure fire method is to grab the CoT and the capital. Then you can force a peace on your terms. If you want to grab more, burn a few tradeposts too and start building your own replacements.
 
If you want Austria to declare a war on you, you could always try to claim their throne. Or ally with Turkey. That should bring you into a war with Austria pretty soon.

You'll need to grab a few provinces to give you enough stars to claim the Everglades. Or you could go for Vienna :)
