When you expand your settlement you will eventually start running into enemies, these enemies will get harder and harder as you progress. This will beckon a player to take things slow and build up his settlement before continuing. And yes there are also some sorts of stone that you can't dig through.

Will there also be underground bodies of water or possible lavaflows that need to be dealt with?

In response to this. I am pretty certain it is a no. Apparently the dev team did discuss it but they decided against it

In the Yogscast I do think they say something about them not wanting to have the player’s hard work ruined by being “flooded” out with such events.

I can certainly appreciate that – but at the same time, a “little” natural disaster would be expected and add a bit of challenge to the game. . . . . . . . note the word “little” though.
;)

Hey all. I am posting to let you know I have collated all the Q and A from across the Dwarven board and put it in the first post. Check it out. If I missed some just post with a link. ;)

Q: Will there be "champion diggers/crafters etc" in the game?
A: The dwarves will level up, and become more proficient, though they will not earn titles for it. Not at the moment at least. Good idea though. :)

Q: Will there also be underground bodies of water or possible lavaflows that need to be dealt with?
A: Nope. We experimented with water, but it did not really fit in to the game we want to make. It just took to much of the fun out of the game.

Q: How large is the radius of the cultivation stone?
A: Ooh, I'm actually not sure but about 5-6 blocks.

thank you. Added

I got a few questions for you.

1. How many door types are there? Are there going to be iron doors for example? Magic doors? Or is it just a wooden one? Can creatures break these doors down over time?

2. I saw that there are mechanical machines, including what looks like a steam engine and pipes (announcement trailer, at exactly 23 seconds). What exactly do these machines DO? Does it power electric lights, power traps, doors, or what? No one seems to have brought this up. Or is it just for show?

3. Will there be rooms? Or is it pretty much a commune/barracks style where no dwarf has any personal space?

4. Will the aboveground area actually serve a purpose? If we can grow trees and food underground what possible use would above ground serve? or are you going to retool farming and forestry so that it can only happen above ground?

5. You mentioned a tech tree. What exactly does the tech tree entail? Steam powered golems and technological metallurgy? magic spells? What kind of "tech" do these dwarves have?

6. How big is the above ground area? Can we build a city there if we wish? Or are we pretty much stuck undergound?

7. What kind of features will be in the above ground area? Brooks, hills, monster dens? Or is the underground portion the only place with interesting stuff in it?

I've got a question. Well several really but its all about a single topic. :eek:o

What are Zeal's views/plans in regards to modding of the game?

Are the dev's: All for it? If so do they have plans to actively support it somehow? Are they Against it, or maybe simply indiffrent about it?

What a shame :(

It's possible to implement both lava and water so that your warned when digging next to them and such dig orders are automatically cancelled. You could require a manual confirmation to dig away into water/lava.

Or you could implement them like shallow underground lakes/cave rivers so you always run into the cave above it first.

Oh and yes a question:
How can dwarfs brew beer without water from their underground well?

Sorry guys for the lack of answers. We've been flooded with work, but we will try to be better at answering your questions.

There are several doors available, so don't worry. And yes - enemies will attack the doors (eventually destroying them) if they stand in their ways.

2. I saw that there are mechanical machines, including what looks like a steam engine and pipes (announcement trailer, at exactly 23 seconds). What exactly do these machines DO? If you're talking about what i think you're talking about, that machinery has been scrapped. Though AGoD still contain electricity, which is used for powering up certain contraptions.

3. Will there be rooms? Or is it pretty much a commune/barracks style where no dwarf has any personal space?

That is entirely up to you. Personally i like to give my dwarfs individual rooms if the space is available. There is no such thing as the "room-mechanic" from DK2 if that's what you meant.

4. Will the aboveground area actually serve a purpose? If we can grow trees and food underground what possible use would above ground serve? or are you going to retool farming and forestry so that it can only happen above ground?

Dwarfs prefer to live underground (as we all know :) ), so the game will primarily take place underground. But you will still be able to visit and interact with the surface, for various reasons - both quest-related and for other purposes.

5. You mentioned a tech tree. What exactly does the tech tree entail? Steam powered golems and technological metallurgy? magic spells? What kind of "tech" do these dwarves have?

I will not go into depth about the techs, but basically most techs will fall into one of following categories - offensive, defensive, economical or upgrades. There are some techs that can't be placed in those categories however. The techs will do a whole lot of things. Easy examples; they might unlock better objects to build or improve upon the dwarfs abilities.

6. How big is the above ground area? Can we build a city there if we wish? Or are we pretty much stuck undergound?

When people are let loose with AGoD, it sometimes ends up with them building pretty amazing things on the surface. But why would any dwarf want to build a city above ground!? :p

Tough question, since dwarfs would never use magic! :)
