My question is whether this is normal? Does every character in the game (or every elf?) have, as a matter of course, a starting intelligence trait that then modifies other stuff?
Best is when you and your wife are a genius and your kid comes out dumb. Always love that feeling.
Characters are highly likely to get a small intelligence trait, yes.
This is actually one of my favorite parts of the game since the scaled intelligence adds flavor to every character a bit, ands helps picking in elective monarchies.

I am currently playing as a Norsca Khorn dynasty. I have tried that Blood Tournament several times and have failed each time. How is the fights calculated? Sometimes I lose against simple courtiers with lousy stats. My character atm is a daemon prince, but he can die so I am thinking about his son participating in this tournament if he is to die. I have already lost two of my kings whom I expected to win.

I think that was asked none too long ago either here or in a similar thread. But to summarize, it's not (entirely at least) about the stats, it's about the traits this person has.
This code was made taking into account about every trait we have and gives them a value of how much it helps you survive. I'd have to check the (insanely long) list for details.
Also, why in all the Chaos realms would you do this when you're a Daemon Prince already? No particular reason for that, all in all.

A Khornite prince is generally pretty hard to beat in a fight. The tournament is mostly based off traits with a small impact from martial, but it's also got a random component and if you don't have a giant advantage iterative probability will eat you alive.

No no, I haven't done it as daemon prince. The father of my daemon prince and grandfather both participated in the blood tournament and died. The daemon prince never did.

Well, in theory you can convert to the cytharai group as an elf. In fact, if Asuryan burns you as the Phoenix King, you get the option to convert to Khaine as a response, same as Malekith did. The culture and graphical culture won't change, of course.

As far as I'm aware, the differences between these races arose over a very long time and probably wouldn't take place within the reasonable timescale of the mod. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

As said above, strictly speaking, Elves can switch over. The graphical culture stays the same, but those elves look almost exactly the same anyways, so whatever.
Chaos Dwarfs, sadly, have been affected by Chaos over numerous (dwarf, so long) generations and have become a somewhat stable sort of mutant. So becoming one would take excessively long.

I was thinking of starting as Nagarythe, conquer some territory near Naggaroth, declare independence and swear fealty to the Witch King and convert to his Dark Elf religion but one problem though is that there is no decision to convert to Liege's religion or the local religion of the county so would have to cheat for this to work, or become Emperor of Ulthuan and get burned but then I could not swear fealty to the Witch King since he is also Empire-level? Maybe decisions to convert to local or lieges culture will be added in the future for the non-lore (or both) versions?

Why would you want to have Malekith as a liege? He can usurp your titles, and if you have magic potential(as a male) he will kill you. Seriously, kill the poor bastard, he can't even have sex because of the armor.

Indeed. If you're Druchii, about the only time one shouldn't prioritise killing Malekith is when one is Malekith.

How finishes are the various races/countries/factions?

How much is the high-tech of Imperials/Dwarves/Skavens--the tech that would be anachronistic in CK2--featured? Can I build steam tanks?

To usurp his realm from within, and also I had hoped to convert to his religion by swearing fealty but since that's not possible I might tutor my children with him or another Dark Elf so that they convert to his culture or religion. If that's not possible either, I guess I have to go the Malekith way and get burned.

Elfs can also become pleasure cultists wich in a way makes them chaos elves

How do you do that?

You can't ursurp his realm. If Malekith loses his empire title, after a while it gets dissolved by event, if i'm not mistaken.

In a rare event chain, one of your vices can be indulged in a...let's say quite excessive way. That, of course, requires you to have some "negative" or immoral trait, like deceitful or wroth.

Aye, exactly. Malekith is considered the only guy capable of holding together that cesspit named Naggaroth. I doubt a culture like the Druchii would accept anyone inheriting as 'rightful'. So you're doomed to do that the hard way. Ideally you just secure two kingdoms or three beforehand, if Malekith allows that to happen.
