I experience Crashes to the Desktop at occasions which appear to have no common relationship. They all occur during games, and I can start games without any difficulty.

I currently have DirectX 9.0 but I had the same problem with DirectX 8.1 prior to upgrading.

Specifications:
Intel Pentium 4 2.0 GHz
512 MB RAM
nVidia GeForce 3 Ti500 64MB
Creative SoundBlaster Live!
Windows XP Home Edition

Can anyone help me?

Oh, I thought I should add because these questions seem to be the defacto first response:

- I never modified my gamefiles
- I installed the patch immediately after installing the game for the first time (It was a christmas gift)

1. Have you updated all your drivers? Video or audio drivers are often at fault in a case like this. Your nVidea driver should be at least 40.xx or later.

2. Try renaming your \avi folder to \avi_old to disable the binkplay start-up clips. I believe that binkplay leaves some strange data lingering in registers that can cause problems in the game.

3. Have you tried backing off hardware acceleration settings or turning off hardware acceleration completely? This is another common problem with the nVidia drivers.

I have read some of the previous posts regarding this issue and I have determined that turning off the music fixes all of the CtDs I was experiencing. Thank you though, my drivers were also up to date.

Try the AVI folder rename. That has been known to cause problems with the music as well. That way you may be able to use the music again. Also which publisher version are you using eg. Strategy Frist or Pan Vision.

That did the trick. Is the BINK thing going to be resolved in a patch or is that it for intro movies?

It is diffcult to pin the fault. For some its OK, for others there are problems.

Really it is something for the Bink people (http://www.radgametools.com/bnkmain.htm) to sort out. People have problems with the Bink format in other games too.

Yep the Bink player is very touchy at best. :(
Glad the bypass worked for you though. Once you have seen the intro it is better to get right to the game anyways. :)
