well i had these troubles with HoI2 also but the problem seems worse with EUII so heres my problem:

my crashes are fast and frequent and occur within weeks of starting a game, sometimes i get to play 2 months or a little more before a crash which is usually a straight to the desktop job, a complete freeze of the program, a freeze and crash of the entire system or a quit with a non-descript windows error message.

I am playing on XP, with version 1.09, sound drivers are updated as far as i can go before it causes problems, the same goes for my graphics card drivers. Although i am having problems trying to update them as i have tried manual and automatic updating and nothing there seems to create a setup that works smoothly. ( for example updated sound drivers fail to work at all and the updated drivers i have tried create bigger problems than the crashes i get.

I have tried all the standard suggestions for fixing CTDs on this forum (avi_back etc) but nothing works, i have also had my Direct X analysed.

One thought i had was perhaps my laptop (Advent 7017) is overheating? in regards to this i was suggested to update the firmware, however i cannot locate it and i cannot find the advent website anywhere after many hours of looking!

this is only a temporary problem as in a few months i will have access to a better computer but id love to solve this issue so i could play EUII and all the other paradox games, if anyone has a suggestion please let me know.

Your problem could easily be hardware, such as the overheating you mention. Do you have other reason to suspect that? Testing would be as simple as playing with a fan blowing air into the airvents of the laptop.

EU2 was quite graphically intensive for its time, so if your laptop is not that recent (say 5 years old) it could be causing the CPU and video chips to generate more heat than other apps do.

You might post your directx output here for another lookover too.

You say you had your DirectX analysed, was it by me?
If so please provide a link.

it was by a friend of mine, heres the DirectX results though:

(pasted down to directX components which is correct IIRC, if not let me know)

Whole lot of problems here.
First is your Video card driver being way out of date and not made for the current Dx version.
You need to update them, if you hjave problems doing so you should contact ATI support for asistance.

If you are not having trouble with other games or apps, then it is unlikely to be an overheating problem.

well i submitted a support requet to ATI and am waiting a reply, if their help comes to no avail would it be possible to use direct 8 to better effect you think?

also any other problems you noticed that need adressing?

I recieved a reply from ATI tech support, it said support is not available for laptops! and to seek help from the maker of my laptop, however I cannot find any website for Advent or any place to recieve support from them so am at a total loss at how i can update my drivers, i tried omega drivers but to no avail, what can i possibly try?

Let me ask jpd to take a look he knows more about laptops than me.

I would start with the basics, and that is to make sure your memory works as it should. From what I can make out of the dxdiag dump, your ATI makes use of so called shared memory, meaning it does not have it's own video RAM, but piggy bags it off of your main RAM.

This places a high burden on the SiS chipset. And older versions of these, as the VIA chipset, were plagued with problems. And the trouble is, Paradox games stress the memory interface of the video subsystem far more that 3D shooter games.

Download the memory tester from here http://www.memtest86.com/. Place it on a floppy disk (as per instructions), and boot from it.

Use the options to enable all tests (including advanced) and let it run for a couple of hours.

ok but i am without a floppy disk drive, i have no blank CDs also but is it possible to use a flash memory stick? if so how do i boot from it? sorry im technical know-how is lacking severely.

No, it's not. What you download is a disk image (in linux format) specifically layed out for a floppy drive.

Not as far as memory testing is concerned, alas.

Didn't you get an external floppy drive with your laptop ?

no i didnt.

well i finally succeeded in updating my drivers to a new version, however i played the game yesterday with barely any crashes, yet just today the crashes began becoming more frequent yet again to the point of unplayability.

Okay Make sure you are following all this advice.
1) Make sure you have the latest patch for the game.
2) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
3) Set the color depth to 16BIT
4) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
5) Run a Virus check and a Adware/Spybot checker
6) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-4.

And if the problems continue after that, a new Directx output would be a start.

i updated my sound drivers after much struggling, anyway problems persisted and a day or 2 after began to get more frequent, every few months it crashes, sometimes i manage a year but rarely, heres the new DirectX report:

Have you tried everything else listed in post 15?

yes i have, im also now playing around with SpeedFan, out of my depth though, but as i play crashes increase in frequency so i thought it could be a cause, not really sure how to address that problem though. Nor have any idea if im barking up the wrong tree, im pretty much at a loss.
