Playing as Spain I diplo-annexed Naples, and for the next few decades I spent time trying to upgrade relationships with the other countries in Italy. I sent a few gifts to the Doge in Venice and then promptly forgot about him as I got involved in a war.

A decade or so later an event comes up that says the Doge has died heirless and that I have inherited the Venetian throne! How would this happen and why was I choosen? I was never allied with Venice nor did I have that great a relationship with them.

Austria didn't seem to like the idea very much because they invaded me and Mantua, Corfu, Cyprus, and Crete all revolted...

same question

Coincidentally, I came here to ask the exact same question : I inherited Scotland and I was wondering if it was related to the relations you had with the country. Now, I know the answer.

However, I had some more about the same topic :

1) How does this event work? Is the original event "the king of Scotland die without heir" and the country with the better relation with this country receive the inheritance (being the player or a computer country) or is it the other way around (you get the "inheritance" event and inherit of the country you had the better relation with)?

2) I read several posts about BB points. It's my first game, and I don't want to spoil the game by knowing too exactly the mechanisms, but I'd like to know if I get BB points for an inheritance.

3) I noticed my relation with several nations dropped when I received Scotland (but not my relations with *all* countries. Several of them weren't affected). So, how does it work? Did I inherited too of the relations Scotland had with other countries, or something like that?

You are probably right Bib. I was handing out the royal marriages quite liberally there for awhile, but if I was the one with the best relationship with Venice I would be surprised as I only gave them a one time gift.

Does a country have to be below a certain power level to be annexed by a player? I wouldn't think you could annex a power like France even if it didn't have a Super power status. aka (Gold ring around capital).
