I'm quite enjoyed this game but every once in a while the game crashes for no reason I can divine. I usually get about 45-60 minutes of playtime, but I've had it crash after as few as 10 minutes or as long as 2 hours!

So far it I can't find a reproducible trigger for these phantom crashes. They have occurred while I've been browsing courtiers for more able council members, while I've been scrolling around the map to get a feel for terrain, and not once have I crashed during any of the events listed on the first to pages of the tech support forums. gonna keep digging, but I hope this gets a reply in the meantime.

Edit: Also, I'm running CK2 with steam, on windows 7.

please post a dxdiag.txt (you can delete everything after the "Sound devices" section for brevity), settings.txt, system.log and error.log files (you'll need to rename the .log files to .txt to upload). Also open setup.log, search for "checksum", and paste that line only in here.

DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7).
After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then post the first part of that file here.

I see no real problem with the above, but on re-reading your OP you may have an overheating problem. Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU) 1/ before starting the game up and 2/ after say 20 minutes' play. If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, Google for and install SPEEDFAN.
 
Now that you mention it I have had some issues with overheating before, but I was thinking overheating would make subsequent play times shorter, which doesn't really seem to be the case...
