The year is 1936. The world stands poised on the brink of yet another world war.
I am Igor Foderchenko, the recording secretary for the Political Bureau of the Soviet Union. Speaking euphemistically, our situation could be described as normal/hard. I will be recording this on the new people’s recording device known as Core, version 1.05c.
Since the revolution the Soviet Union has survived the attacks of various imperialist powers to cement the revolution. With the rise of Hitler, the contradiction between the Soviet Union and imperialism in general has given way to the particularly salient and sharp contradiction between the Soviet Union and German imperialism. Consequently, the contradictions between the Soviet Union and certain other imperialist powers have been relegated to a secondary position, while the rift between these powers and Germany has been widened.
This analysis, as expressed in the politburo meeting of January 02, 1936, is that war between Germany and the USSR is considered inevitable, given Adolph Hitler and the Nazis deep-seated hatred for Russian communists.
Our goal is to delay for as long as possible the inevitable war with the Fascist Germany. During this delay we are to construct a secondary line of defense from Sevastapole to Leningrad to be known as the “Stalin line”. This line will be fortified. As well our research will be concentrated solely on the army, with priority given to the infantry.
On the diplomatic front we shall attempt to bring Turkey into the Comintern. This will give us an avenue into the Balkans and the Middle East for further long-term plans.
Long live the revolution.
