Hi all,

I was just playing a game of HoI2 (w/DD&Armageddon). I enjoy this game, and I've been playing a lot lately, but some things really irritate me about it.

After many long play sessions as the Western Allies, Germany finally collapsed, though Italy and Japan remain as active enemies. Suddenly, I received the Redraw the Map of Europe event, and I have been forced to convert the game to the historic 1945 borders. I couldn't even save the game with the event unactivated! This particular game had long since departed from the historical timeline, and I don't see why I'm not given a free hand to rearrange western Europe to my liking instead of the Yalta/Potsdam forms. The odd way that the events activated have left some extremely bizarre results in place such as a Stalinist Austria, even though the USSR controlled only 10% of the country (there is no way the Western Allies would have permitted this; look at the actual historical solution, and historically, USSR controlled a good deal more of Austria in 1945 than they do in my game), or as the continued existance of Vichy France! My armies cannot even supply into Northern Italy now, because this Red Austria is in the way!!! I'm left with having to go into the save game file and rearrange everything by hand the way I had intended to, or give up finishing for lack of interest. :(

There must be some way to change this (these) events so that I (or other players) are not forced to accept diplomatic solutions that I/they would not, in the position of the leaders we play the roll of, choose or accept. And moreover, to avoid the implausible and impossible to play situations that these events can create.

I know that there has been problems with persistant Vichy in the past, but I thought that the events had been corrected to eliminate this. Vichy should collapse absolutely whenever the Allies invade metropolitan France. Historically the fall of the Magreb was enough for the Germans to occupy all of France, after all. Events finalizing the war in Europe shouldn't, imo, initiate until there is no territory in Europe still controlled by any Axis nation.

I am considering trying to rewrite the pertinent events, but I'm not sure I have the skill to do so. :( In addition, I am worried that if I rewrite events from their Vanilla form, any new patchs will not install properly. I hope that some of you know whether this would be the case or not.

Thanks for any help or insight you wish to share. :)

The easiest way is the sleep the event before it happens.

Creating other ones who will cover all possibilities in the end of WW2 would have taken too much time...

It is a real pain. I tend to surround Berlin and not actually conquer it before I got as much as I want (kill any infantry that pop up). You have to release some nations as a puppet I think, and when you conquer Berlin immediately puppet Germany. Keep a few ongoing saves going at this time so you can revert back to the milestones once you know what happens.

A good (though painful) hand made way to go is...

-type event for vichy to join axis or dissapear
-get rid of Axis minors OR annex them and release the puppets you would like
-let Germany live till the end...
-puppet carefully, one by one the countries you wish to release and consider event which gives -3% dissent (1009 I think) as a non - games option (instead of event)
Save every week or so... and good luck.

An interesting way to go is to DOW everyone who stands on your way - it's risky but makes your game much more interesting after you've achieved your primary goals.

There are some mods (@op: SMEP does that I think) that have a neat solution: The controller of the Capital get's the country. And some bigger ones can be partitioned.
This is 1-2 simple events per country and there aren't that many...

Hi everyone,

Thanks to all who responded to my post. :) They do leave me with some further questions, though. Pepsi_max, how does one "sleep" an event before it happens? Does that require writing a new event, or can it be done in the F12 console in some way. I wish I had more saves around the time of the problem, pdBravo. :( Good to remember for next time, though. As to not conquering Berlin, I never conquered it. The NPC Soviets did. I was in a gripping race with them for who would liberate what in Central Europe (thus my Austria problem) when the Germans suddenly surrendered. Thanks for the tip on the mod, Narmon. That brings me to reiterate the worry from my earlier post, though:

Regarding your mod suggestions, Conanteacher, I had thought of a mod that would cause Vichy to be annexed by Germany if the Allies landed and controlled any two provinces in metropolitan France for more than two weeks (to prevent a Dieppe style raid from collapsing Vichy prematurely). I know that the game already has certain Vichy ending events triggered by American actions in North Africa, but they seem to have rather narrow parameters that cause them to fire. In the game I'm referencing, for example, Italy had seized about 60% of the Magreb before Vichy was created, and this was subsequently liberated by the British, and then passed to Free France (on account of my moving a Free French unit through the UK occupied territories after I had assumed military control of the other Allied nations.) This string of actions meant not only that the historic OperationTorch landings were superfluous, but also that any Torch dependent Vichy events were not possible, as well.

I plan to return to the last autosave of the game before I was flummoxed by the end of war events, but I am hoping to hear how to "sleep" the event, as Pepsi_max suggested, before I do. Then I can restructure western and central Europe more fitting to my own ideas. ;)

By the way, is it not rediculous that democratic powers actually get dissent for liberating Axis conquests?!? No one in Britain, the USA, Canada, etc. would have been angered by restoring the liberty of Denmark, Luxembourg, Norway, etc. In fact, the only real option that would have caused dissent in the Western Democracies would have been attempting to retain outright imperial control.

Thanks again for all of your interest and help with these difficulties. :) I'm looking forward to continuing this game once I know how to "sleep" or otherwise forstall the "Redraw the Map of Europe" event.

Conan solution looks much more promising than mine.

To sleep the event, you need to put in the save file the right event (the one of german capitulation).
-Open the game file
-Research for "sleepevent"
-There is some numbers here. Put "38" between two of them, no matter which of them.
