OK I have a real problem here. Causes:

1)I had a CDROM drive crash on me, and it appears to have affected my EU CD - of course it was in so often, it was the one in there when the drive died! :0

2)Due to O/S problems (Win95b) and having to reinstall to fix those, I have lost my registry entry for EU.

So ... I finally get my O/S working fine again, but the registry is empty. EU still plays (because it was installed previously), but the sound doesn't work (guess it is something to do with the registry entries).

So I try to reinstall - however, the CD hangs in a couple of places (drive can't read the files) - there is a mark along the CD; looks like the surface was messed up when the drive crashed or something.

I try to install patches I have downloaded, but they can't find that the game is installed, so it won't patch.

This leads me to my questions: Is there a way to get another English CD without having to go out & buy another copy of the game? (I have the English, not North American version; as well I have the German version as I was one of those who bought it early on when the ability to switch was announced.) Is there something I could put in the registry so it recognizes that I have the game installed & therefore I can patch it?

As the game runs, I don't want to have to spend another $40 to get another CD ... but I would like sound & the ability to install the 1.10 patch. Also, this will be a problem if I ever have to install the game in another location ... :(

The registry entry is just a key that will not affect the sound. It just lets the CD know that the game is installed.
To change the damaged CD e-mail support@europa-universalis.com
They will probably ask you to send the damaged CD (with or without a handling charge) in order to change it for you.
The Paradox people are very nice..........

I have just noticed (it *is* early in the morning* that you have 2 versions.
Why cant you uninstall and reinstall using the non damaged one? An English exe file can be substituted for the German one if that is the undamaged one.

I wondered about installing with the other (German) version. If I install with the German one, even if I copy over my saved English version files, wouldn't I be unable to use any additional patches for the English version (won't it think I have the German one installed)?

I will try to email Paradox. I agree they have been very nice. :)

Haha, Rex - good luck!

Patric wrote back and as hoped, they will exchange. :D The only problem is that while it still functions (not fully normally), I will find it hard to part with my CD and go without the game while I'm waiting on the exchange! Maybe if I can do it while I'm on a vacation ... but that will be some months away. :(
