Regnum Poloniae : A History of the Kingdom of Poland from 1453

An Introduction

Poland. When you speak that word to anyone in the modern era, the first thoughts that come to mind are those of a weak country that is passed around and invaded by all around it. It was not always so. Once, a long time ago, the Kingdom of Poland was one of the grandest nations in the world. All other Kings, Lords and even Emperors stood in awe of the grand armies of the Polish, the elegant buildings designed by the finest architects of that generation and the wise Kings, under whose reign the Kingdom of Poland became the nation upon which the sun never set. As a historian, i find it surprising, if not a little shocking, that no others have chosen to cover this period, merely focusing on all the other nations who are prominent today. Therefore, i invite you to come with me on a tale of war and peace, as we explore the Kingdom of Poland from its rise in 1453 til the height of its power in the early nineteenth century.

Yay Poland, historys greatest underdog. A nation that has been wiped of the face of the map more than once and is still here today. Good luck

Regnum Polonaie : King Casimir the Great

When someone thinks back to the early times of the Kingdom of Poland, the first name to come to mind is King Casimir. One of the greatest of the Jagiellons, his decisions in this critical era would echo throughout history. The choice to move into the Crimean Khaganate on the 5th of June 1453, was the beginnings of the Grand East Hold or Wielki Wschód Trzymaj. The consent of the Archbishop of Krakow was given as soon as asked, the Pope already knowing and agreeing with the directions of King Casimir. As said by Duke Izaak at the gathering of the armies "Poland has the strength and the will to take all of Asia for Christianity, if given the direction and the men."

Bringing the light of Catholicism to the Crimea was a secondary objective to Casimir though. Using the power given to him by the Pope at the Vatican the year before, the King planned to take the entire north for the Kingdom of Poland. During the summer of 1453, he wrote his magnum opus, The Code of the Polish or the Kodeks Polski, that details his plans. To quote, "The Teutonic Order is no longer the defender of Christianity in the land of the slavs. Our land must be re-taken from them, and then we shall bring the light of our lord to the heretics.", leading to the Polish war against the Order, Casimir planning to re-take the land his great-grandfather had given.

The armies of King Casimir had succeeded in destroying the armies of their major enemies, taking all of Crimea and the Kingdom of Brandenburg by the end of the year 1456 when disaster struck among-st the Polish nobility. A fever had passed around the upper class, supposedly after the return of knights from the war with Crimea and it had led to the death of Prince Michal at the age of four. The discovery of his sons death led to the collapse of Casimir at the siege of Danzig and he had to be carried to his tent by his royal guard. Seven days later, Casimir made truce with the Khagan of Crimea and the Hochmeister of the Order claiming that his sons death was a sign for the wars to stop.

Following this, the Polish court was then shocked by Casimir presenting a child to the court when he returned as his son. Claiming to have found him in the reeds, following a sign from the Lord Christ himself, Casimir claimed that he would bring Poland glory and stability. This action was not supported by the Lords and Ladies of the kingdom, who all suspected the true origin of the child and the health of their King. The Queen had become distant from the King over the past year, and this event caused the end of any relationship between the two. Queen Magdalena refused to acknowledge the child, nor to speak with the King, especially after the new Prince was christened as Prince Michal by Casimir, who was still grieving for the death of his son.

Casimir the Great then went to war with the Golden Horde, the last remnants of one of the greater Khanates of the previous decade as he dedicated his efforts to providing an empire for his new heir. This dedication to the cause was what led to the King leading the armies himself, taking risks that worried the Generals of the armies and the Knights. Eventually, the Golden Horde and the last true Khan were forced against the Caspian Sea, twelve thousand hardened horsemen who had ridden with the Hordes for their entire lives, as the Polish Holy Army descended upon them. The slaughter of the Khan and his army was the last great act by King Casimir, as he collapsed again during the battle and was taken to the sidelines. He never woke up again, dying in his sleep at the age of thirty-five. His confidence in the nation of Poland though was passed to his heir through the childs advisors and teachers, which was the last true legacy of King Casimir the Great. He gave the Kingdom of Poland its strongest warlord by showing his child the ways of Poland. The ways of war.
