Reinstallation trouble - afaik not yet reported

I've had EU2 up and running on this Sony laptop since February last year without any notable problems. Last month there was a grievous system crash (non EU related of course) and I lost most of my hard disk. Now I can't reinstall EU2. InstallShield starts but doesn't get to the first screen before it gives up with the following cryptic message...

"An installation support file 'C:/WINDOWS/TEMP/{CA5DD6E1-B508-4922-815D-479E3228B17A}/setup.inx' could not be installed. The system cannot find the file specified."

Now obviously I know of the setup.inx problem but what's that folder? Looks like something out of the registry.

It's looking for a previous installation that's in that folder. Follow the complete uninstall directions in this forum's FAQ/Self Help Guide (link in my sig.). Just do as many of the steps as you can...some may not work depending on what's been trashed by your earlier problem and what hasn't. Whatever else, make sure you remove that folder before trying to install again. (Note: it's a hidden folder so you'll have to chage your folder options to see it).

That should do it.

Still no good I'm afraid. I checked all the setup files and could find none for EU. I emptied the TEMP folder and defragmented, all to no avail. Bizarre.

Okay...a couple things...

I'll need to know what OS and which publisher version (SF/Ubi/etc.) we talking about here so I can give you correct instructions.

In the interim...

Go to your Control Panel and click on the Add/Remove Programs icon. Is EU2 listed anywhere there? If so, try "uninstalling" from there.

Next...

Go to the C;\Window\Temp folder, make sure you change the folder properties to "view hidden" and then do a search for all files in that folder (and subfolder) that include the text strings "EU2" or "Europa Universalis". If there are any, remove them.

Next...

Open the registry (regedit.exe) and look for any keys with with "Europa Universalis", "Paradox", "Strategy First", "Ubi", etc. and if there are any, remove them and save.

Any other suggestions will have to wait until I know which OS and version you have.
