Relationship of cost to unit quality?

Is there a relationship between a unit's cost and a unit's performance? Do you 'get what you pay for'? I am asking because I have noticed that as the English I often lose a naval battle while outnumbering the French 4-1 or more! (They then land units in Kent and besiege it, a feat which happens regularly but ought to be rare!) The English of course have a cost rating of 'C' for warships.

Of course the Turks have infantry that cost 1 ducat each and they can slap anyone they choose to concentrate on.... Of course the Turks also pay a premium price for warships and don't seem to get much more for their money than the English....

Yes & No

Yes, as your troops get better they cost more.

No, Turkeys cheeper troops are not worse then Englands more costly at the same tech level (might have better leaders though).

Thanks for the answer! Actually it may belong in the FAQ forum but I was thinking as a scenario designer when I asked it. (i.e. Would I want to give a major power plentiful but worthless troops or ships?) There are so many variables in this game. It's a real challenge for a would be scenario designer. I love it!
