Just wondering if anyone knows or has heard during the discussions here: will any soverign, at any time, have the ability to relinquish the throne? Seems like this should be an option, but with obvious consequences. Anyone have any idea?

It wasn't an entirely unknown circumstance, of course. There are many examples, but the one which comes most to mind is Edward II's abdication in favor of his son, the future Edward III.
