I don't know if any one else has posted or tried this yet, but there is a relativley easy way to rename armies, and though I haven't tried it yet, to rename just about anything.

All you have to do is save your game, then open the file with an editor like Notepad. Scroll through the other countries til you get to yours. Then scroll down the list, it's a bit long, but you should find your list of armies and navies and shortly after the list of historical leaders. Now, you should see the army's current name in quotation marks. Just highlight the name (but not the marks!!!), and type in what you want instead. When you reload the game, voila! That 'Home Army' stationed in Calais, is now the 'Imperial English Army', and that 'Red Squadron' is now the 'Irish Squadron'.

Very nice, indeed.

Another way of renaming, though hit and miss, is to reorganize an army/navy. Transfer the whole force to the new force. It will now have no name. It will get a new name. Navies often get some name based on the geographic location, like 'Antigua Squadron'. Armies, though, are only given names from the game files. I have to admit, I spend a lot of time on this to get good names for forces - silly me.

One problem I've got is that when I get into a war I use a certain set of cities in a convenient location to build my armies. They all get the same name of course. If I go to the savegame file I have to copy the exact number of infantry, etc.,first so that I can identify the army I want to rename. It would be nice if there were an easier way to rename armies and navies.

I agree and don't think we should have to feel silly customizing the game. As Vurbil states, in a future patch or at least EU2, you should definitely be able to name your own armies. While not the highest of priorities, army and navy names often come to mean nothing. This hurts the RPG feel and kind of takes you out of the game emotionally.
