I move a large unit of mixed INF, CAV & ART into an enemy province and the system immediately defaults into besieging the city. That is fine. However, to avoid CAV losses, since they are no use in a seige, I want to reorganise my troops and move at least the CAV onto another province where they will prove more use ie; joining a potential pitched battle.

But the game does not seem to allow this to happen. It does allow me to press beseige button a number of times but all this does is split all the troops of this large unit into smaller even segments. You still cannot reorganise during a siege. This is pretty strange and does not seem realistic!

On the other hand, if I have my CAV as a separate unit to the INF + ART then I have the difficulty organising my timing to make them arrive in the province at the same time as the foot unit if there will be a pitched battle. Under these circumstances I can peel them off but I cannot reorganise the other troops in an easy fashion.

Does anyone know how best to handle this so you only commit what you want to the seige and the rest can move on? I hope I have just missed something as it would be dissapointing to find you cannot do anything.

U can't organise troops who are sieging well. Just send the troops u want to siege in there separately and save the others for whatever u wanna do. IF u need them both at the same time to beat of an emeny combine them for the duration. IF they start sieging in such an event just lift the siege wuithdraw, reorganise and send back in what u want.

This is essentially what I do - organize my Cav as a separate unit, and attempt to have them arrive at the same time as my other units. Once the seige has begun, you can click on the individual bars below your seiging units to select the Cav unit, then send it elsewhere. If you are really worried about having your units arrive at the same time, you can add a single artillery unit to the Cav unit to make the Cav unit travel at artillery speed. But, unless that unit is actually killed in the pitched battle, this only slows down your Cav as it tries to leave the province afterward. I usually just try to guess instead, and generally end up with the separate units arriving within a day or three of each other.

It would be nice if we could use the standard reorganization methods during a seige, but I'm not the first person on this forum to say that!

& you will not be the last.

"Sir, permission to peal off the cavalry to recon/harass the surrounding provinces."

"Permission denied soldier."

"But sir, they're obviously wasted here!"

"I'm sorry soldier, we're all committed for the duration. It's physically impossible for the cavalry to leave now, we're sieging!"

"But sir! That doesn't make any sense!"

"I know son. It's a (drumroll please) Paradox..."

I use the tactic of splitting up attacking armies as well. Have had some strange experiences with it:

When the first group arrives it starts a battle with the defending forces. When the second groups arrives later, with the artillery, it doesn't join the fight but starts besieging! Is this supposed to happen?

I use the split-army tactic from time to time as well.

But then occasionally I do the stupido when I use this. I have all my armies split up. With a 20k initial seige force, with infantry and most of my artillery. Then I have my cavalry and my reinforcements elsewhere. Usually not much in the reinforcements stack. 5-10k New recruits to feed the meat grinder with later and such.

So I'm send my army off to seige. Then I go back to doing all the tasks a great emperor must do, like micro-manage his traders, who are obviously too stupid to go anyplace but where I tell them to. 8 months later, I'm wondering why I haven't heard a cannon go off yet. So I go over and look.

You guessed it, the 5 k reinforcement is trying to seige the level 4 fort. Meanwhile, my seige commander, the seige army, and the cavalry all are sitting in the neighboring province talking about the nice inns they have been habitting.

Hey, at least that 5k army has built up its morale by now. :D

So then you go to move your seige army into the battle. But of course, you forgot to deselect the army laying seige to the province. SOOO, the army that was there now lifts the seige are marches off while I fumble for the seige army, grumbling all the while. And of course, while I am doing this, the AI rcognizes the seige is lifted and starts building troops in the province while I'm gone (for all of 3 days.)

ARRRRGHHHH (beats head on computer desk) :D
