Hello my dudes.

My first question is:

Is there a Mod, that makes the game completely SANDBOX? No alliances, guarantees, no events, just everyone wrecking each other and getting random governments over time?
Thats my dream for this game, but sadly I tried every mod possible and its not really there.

Thus, my second question is:

As I'm a modder myself (made some good mods for Total War, etc), I would like to ask if someone can just do a Sandbox mod here for Darkest Hour, as a submod for some other mod or just for the DH FULL version? Because from what I've seen, its not really hard - countries AI's and relations should be set to the middle in all files (lets say all to start at 5 on policies), no prefered countries to befriend or attack, but constant claims on everything around, which is hostile. And during the course of the game, the AI in every country to be able to change 1 point in its policies every 2-3 months or so, thus creating various outcomes everytime.
I tried to do it many times, but always the game starts crashing at some point and I cba reversing every file ive changed from the AIs and countries. Tried it so many times over the years and it seems so easy to be done, yet there is not an actual mod for this after all these years?

So please dudes, either tell me if I missed some pure SANDBOX mod out there or if some experienced DH modder can make it for some other mod or whatever, so everyone can enjoy it finally.

Cos these Events and things, everything scripted, brings soooo many errors, when one tries to change something or edit. And games seem linear always, UK and its Allies, Soviets, etc. I know there are mods, that make alternative history, but again its event-based, linear mods, not really complete chaos and randomness. I want countries to fight each other randomly, like in other Paradox titles. And to be able to finish wars, grabbin territories of each other, etc, not just waiting for the end of the WW and go back to previous borders. Doh.

Other than that, this is THE BEST ww2 simulator out there, best mechanics, best everything. Just no SANDBOX mode.

Cheers and I hope we get some result here,

Not Sandbox by design, but The Grand Campaign mod goes off the historic rails pretty quickly at times. Especially if the Central Powers win WW1 (which is common) - and made easier if you play as Germany to win the war. Then you can save and play as anyone after that. If you have railroaded events, then I'd suggest not playing as one of the China factions in its Civil War. A lot of those events are forced unfortunately. (And Japan gets railroaded out of conquering Manchuria too early - but Japan can be a lot of fun, regardless.)

Play around with it. You have several decades to do what you want. One note, there's a pop up at the beginning of the game that allows you to ensure a historic outcome to WW1 and the Russian Revolution. This used to work for the DH 1.04 version, but as far as I can tell, has no effect on the current version.

In short though, I know of no mod that allows countries to fight each other randomly for no reason at all.

Edit: Now that I think of it, I vaguely remember a mod for HOI2 in which every country starts off at war against every other country, but I never played it and don't remember its name. I don't think very many people played it. It may have been a fun experiment and side project by the modder.

Hello bro.
Ive done the Grand Campaign mod and most of the mods that are available.
Problem with them is that they are event-based always, so going anywhere off the mechanics makes crashes usually. And I like to play minor factions.

What I need is a mod, that makes lets say all them dictators in the Americas fight each other every time, some to go commie, others fascist, etc. And all over the globe.

It seems pretty easy to be made, but maybe Im wrong, from what I checked in files. Every nation has some countries to befriend with (as AI), some countries to hate, some territories to want to annex, etc. So if all these are removed and countries eventually change their policies over the course of the game, becoming different types of Governments, etc, they will start forging alliances maybe and fight each other. And in every playtrough it can be different. Just like in Hoi 4, EU 4, Total war series, etc.

This is a dream for me, for Darkest Hour, since it has the best UI and everything from all games out there, yet it has no sandbox mod yet, for some reason. Maybe its not that easy as I think, since everytime I tried to mod this, it eventually starts crashing. But I use other people files and such, so maybe Im doing something wrong.

If some experienced modder can try this and make it for 1-2 days, will be great.

No.

You should just try Hearts of Iron 4 with Historical Focuses turned off for crazy random sandbox experience. Countries will randomly select alt history paths so you may see Commie USA and Democratic Germany in the same playthrough...with historical focus turned on, Hoi4 is a lot more close to history but still less than DH.
Or even better, Hoi4 with some "battle royale/arena/zombie" like mods.
There is also a mod where you start as Germany and entire world declares war on you immediately...lot's of options there. And many, many more mods to check.

DH Hoi2 was meant to be heavily event/script and history based. Different design goals. And modders can't fully change that; limitations of the engine.
Hoi 4 was made more for casual gamers; DH Hoi2 for classic GSG and history fans. Different target groups. I find both games enjoyble actually; I value each for different reasons!

About modding DH:

If you have time, you can in theory make every country at war with each other in 1933, you need to edit game files yourself though. It's not that hard but time consuming.

Dictators randomly switching to commie, fascist etc? Hard to mod. You need to write events for all these countries, including all variables. Lot's of work.
Please respect modders work, for a total noob in modding it may seem easy and quick to do but nope it's not like this...

I think that there was once a Zombie arena like mod made for DH, but that was years ago. Google it.

Good luck in your search, but I recommend you to just switch to Hoi4.

Hello.

I know Hoi4 has plenty of random-game options available, but the game mechanics there, UI, everything just sucks, compared to DH. So having a sandbox mod here would be a blast.

I understand the game is built around scripts mostly, but if those get removed completely and just added some scripts for random policy changes in every nation, every few months or so would be as close to sandbox as it can get, I guess. Also removing all the "befriend", etc values from countries files. And making countries seek alliances with similar ideology/strength countries.

I tried to do it several times, on various mods, but as there are dozens of scripts and other things everywhere, the game eventually crashes, due to country "x" not being democratic anymore, so ruining some script, that needs it to be, etc.

Thats why I asked if some dude, who is experienced in this, can just remove all them events and make a sandbox mod in this manner. Im sure a lot of folks will enjoy it.

Cheers,
Spartacus,

The only other thing I can think of is try playing a game with the "acceptall" cheat on (or on and off for as long as you like) and enabling the "democracies can declare war" option. Also, leaving the "freedom" cheat on should lead to some very strange results.

Hello Pasha.
I usually use those two cheats, but they affect only the country I am playing or?
I just want for minor factions, which are with similar ideologies to form alliances and with different ideologies to declare war to each other, etc...
Im trying to make it now on the PwV mod, but again it started crashing, once I removed some diplomatic relations, puppet states and AI stuff in the txt files...

I think if you want to create a sandbox, it'd be easiest to start from Armageddon in DH light and go from there
Can I find the AI files for each country, without any variables somewhere?
Like no treaties, no AI behaviour for befriend, etc.
And maybe no events at all? The base files, somewhere? Or they all start off some mod/submod and are connected to events and all..?

You can just delete all AI files and they will be set to default. You would also have to dereference them (by pointing to an empty/default AI file instead) from scenario .inc files and any AI events.
