I was under the assumption that the technological progression of a country is based on: monthly income devoted to research - divided by number of provinces -multiplied by the tech group rate. Therefore I as Turkey, in 1644 with 120+ provinces and being in the Moslem tech group (0.6), should have fallen behind in tech compared to the other major powers which are smaller, more efficient, and mostly in the Latin tech group (1.0). Yet strangely this is not the case. I look at the tech level comparisons in the ledger and I am way, way, way ahead of all the other major powers in infrastructure and land tech, slightly ahead in naval tech, and second only to Russia in trade tech.

Don't tell me it's because of trading or centers of trade, because while I have 4 cot's in the empire in which I have 5 merchants each, I don't have merchants anywhere else, and many other nations have merchants all over the place. Anyway, trading income is only a very small part of my total monthly income.

Also don't tell me it's because the AI doesn't research properly, because when I was playing France in an earlier game, which only expanded by a few provinces, research was much slower despite me giving nothing to the treasury. I also noticed that the costs for each level of tech were about the same overall with both France and Turkey. Someone please tell me what is going on. What does being in a tech group mean anyway? There is a very large difference between the numbers 1.0 and 0.6, yet this seems to have no noticable effect on the game whatsoever.

I'm confused, there seems to be something wrong. Can someone please explain?

The AI loses research when they go bankrupt. The AI regularly goes bankrupt. Thus the AI regularl loses research. But the do build lots of forts though...

I appreciate your reply Viking, but if you had read my entire post it says that *I* performed better in research playing as Turkey then *I* did when *I* was playing as France in a previous game. Also I don't remember seeing any bankruptcies. Aren't they are supposed to be very rare in patch 1.08? I would still like an explanation from somebody. :(

???

Where are you getting these numbers from ?

AFAIK, there is no major difference between different religion tech groups tech adnacement costs.
Only (?) the neighbour bounus is affected. If your ahead of the pack you won't get this anyway.
The BG was much more stricter about this though.

Well, a while back someone posted that there are different modifiers for different tech groups: That Latin = 1.0, Orthodox = 0.8, Moslem = 0.6, and Exotic = 0.1. I assumed that everyone's research abilities are multiplied by these numbers (they should be in my opinion), I guess I was mistaken.

With 120 provinces and certainly a few COT, your revenues affords you such large sums you can bypass all penalties for tech group, size and advance in tech.

What would be interesting is to look at the minors in the savegame file: they should be more advanced than AI major and maybe you.

It would be interesting too to compare your level with the Land, naval, infra and trade. csv file: average dates for levl are given here and I firmly believe most nations and maybe you are falling well behind the schedule.

last about tech group factor: a one province nation in exotic group will raise faster than a big in latin group...

Hmm, never saw that myself.

Anyone know more about this ?

I'm surprised you've never heard of this, aren't you supposed to be one of those people who knows everything about the game? :D Well, please tell me when you find out, because I just keep getting more and more confused.

I'm beginning to suspect that the entire tech group factor has been completely removed from the game, which is a pity because this game is supposed to model an era in which western Europe became the most advanced region in the world, and the great empires of the east fell into decline. If all nations on earth are able to develop technology at the same rate, it takes an enormous amount of history away from the game. :(

*bump*

I can't say that I know the effect of different tech groups, but laurent Favre's reply seems to me to be a reasonable explanation. Since you have such a large number of provinces plus 4 CoTs (which certainly takes you on a different path from the history for Turkey) the money for tech advances would certainly be there. How many provinces and CoTs did you have as France?
