Game Version
1.1.2

Short summary of your issue
Native resolution in gaphics settings is red + GPU runs hot on low settings

Game Version
1.1.2

What OS are you playing on?
Windows 11

Do you have mods enabled?
No

Have you tried verifying your game files?
Yes

How much "pain" is this causing you?
9 - I can't play for an hour because my gpu runs hot

Please explain the issue you experienced in the most condensed way possible
My native screen resolution is 3440 x 1440. This works fine in other games. As you can see in the screenshot, this resolution (among others) is written in red letters in the Vicky 3 graphics settings. So I assume that the game can not handle it properly. I don't find any info about this red letters.
My gpu runs hot, although I disabled vsync and I cap the FPS at 60.

Please explain how to reproduce the issue
It is everytime I play the game. When I look up the resolution in the Vicky3-launcher, it is not in red letters.

Is there anything else you think could help us identify/replicate the issue?
I have no idea, sorry.

I have attached a save game
No

Right click on victoria3.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations" untick every other box in that dialog, Apply and exit.
Then in the launcher Game Settings menu, select fullScreen display mode, Vsync off, refresh rate 60.

DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Vic3/pdx_settings.json .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Vic3/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log , exceptions.log

Thank you for your response! I have made the changes to the victoria3.exe properties, but I did not yet have the time to test if it makes a difference. Attached please find the requested files. There is no exceptions.log-file in my vic3-logs folder.

Please let me know here, thanks.

At fps of 60 your video really should not be running hot still! How hot is that?

In Steam turn on the fps display - what are you seeing in the game? This is to make sure the cap of 60 has taken effect properly.

And finally, what if you choose Vulkan instead of DX11 in the launcher Game Settings menu?

GPU temp is 80 °C from start on, the fans spin at max, and it gets hotter in the long run.
FPS are shown at 60, I also checked it with the Windows X Box Game bar Tool. Both tools show the same.

I do not see an option to choose Vulkan instead of DX in the launcher Game Settings menu:

As you can see, the launcher version is 2023.1.1-rc, which should be the newest one.

Actually that's a beta launcher version, and is behind the current release version 2023.1.1 . Best to opt out of that beta unless it fixes an issue you currently have at any point in time.

In any case, I thought this game had a Vulkan option in the launcher like CK3 does, but clearly not! So you'd have to edit pdx_settings.json and change the renderer line from DX11 to Vulkan to test that possibility.

However! 80c at game start is way too high for any GPU, this is certainly the cause of your problem. What is it before you start the game?

Ok, I have reverted to the last stable version of the launcher.

I changed the renderer from DX11 to Vulkan in the pdx_settings.json.

My GPU runs at 45c after 3 hours of office, skype and other not graphical challenging software. I now compared my GPU usage and temp in CK3 and Vicky3. When I play CK3 with Ultra settings, my GPU usage is at 100%, the temp stays between 60c and 70c and the GPU fan keeps quiet. When I play Vicky3 in middle graphics settings, I have 100% GPU usage and 80c GPU temperature and the GPU fan runs at max speed.

As my resolution is shown red, I think maybe it is not supported by the game?

I don't know what those red figures mean, I've never seen them before in this or any other of our games. Unsupported resolutions would not be displayed at all, you'd think! Also, as this game is newer than CK3 it's hard to imagine it doesn't support resolutions that CK3 does. Do those resolutions show up in the Game Settings menu in our launcher, before you get into the game?

I thought they might indicate a different aspect ratio than your monitor uses, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I'll check with Paradox tonight.

Thanks a lot! I use this resolution in Windows as it is recommended (empfohlen) for my screen:

And I use this resolution in other games without problems. In Vicky 3 I can choose this resolution in the launcher and in the game. In the launcher it looks normal:

But in the game it is in red:

If I use a not-red resolution, the picture looks distorted.

Apparently all resolutions that are NOT 16:9 (which is the 'default' aspect ratio for this game) are flagged in red.

I think all you can do in this case is choose one of the non-red options - do they work okay for you?
