"There is... A strange peace here, Lord Benjen. I thought the world was naught more than petty politics, the ambition to rise to the Iron Throne. But in this cold yet peaceful North, I learned to be at peace with myself. It is unlike the peace of the South, even in peace they wage war. In the North, the peace is true and couldn't be more so. I will have to thank my father for marrying me off to you." - Lady Cersei Lannister, in a conversation with Benjen Stark amidst the woods of Winterfell.
Benjen and his host of northmen returned home in a few weeks time. On the way, Benjen paid a friendly visit to Lord Hoster Tully, who asked for pardon over his daughter's Catelyn's behaviour and offered his condolences to the Starks. Ben thanked him and dismissed the issue of Catelyn, wishing her happiness in the Iron Islands. The friendship between the Tullys and the Starks had soured slightly, but Ben had no ill will against them, nor did Hoster seem to have any against him. With that thought in mind, he rode on to Winterfell.
The arrival was swift, most of the army's men went on their separate ways during the march, nobles returning to their own keeps and peasants and knights going back to their lands and cottages. After reaching Winterfell, Benjen wished the best of luck to those that had to march further north to reach their homes. Then he was finally able to enter his own. Nothing had changed, yet two years had gone by. Eddard's designed Castellan, a lowborn man by the name of Artos, welcomed Benjen to the castle. "Lord Benjen, it is good to see you again." Ben nodded and shook his hand. "Thank you for your service in these two years, Artos." he said to him, the man smiled and invited him to enter. After this formality, the rest of Ben's personal wagon entered the keep.
Ben waited after entering, in order to join lady Cersei in the entrance. He caught sight of her, covered in warm furs. "Was the steed as comfortable as the stablemaster said?" He asked her as he approached and took hold of the reins. Cersei gave him a nasty look while stopping her horse, "As comfortable as it could be in this dank place. Even with all these furs, my clothes are soaking wet." She responded. Ben gave her a wide smile and offered her a helping hand to come down the horse, something which Cersei promptly accepted. "Worry not." He said while helping with her clumsy descent, "The insides of Winterfell are kept warm by hot springs that lie underneath it." Cersei gave him a stare of disbelief, "I was not told that." she said, "How does it function?" She took a firm step on the ground, Ben let go of her then shook his head, "I was simply told a series of small canals go through the walls themselves. Maester Luwin knows more of this." Ben gave his surroundings a long look to gather his memories, it had been two years after all. Cersei gave away her silvery horse to a stableboy. "Shall I show you around? Winterfell is no Red Keep, but it has some thrilling stories behind each crack in the wall." He said. Cersei gave him a courteous nod, "I would be glad to visit, but after a rest, my Lord." she said. Ben was half glad to hear that, he did want to remember his childhood memories once again, but the travelling had taken its toll. He did a move of the hand, inviting her to follow him, and the two headed to what was once Eddard and Catelyn's sleeping room. Now Benjen and Cersei's.
Over the next few days, Benjen showed Cersei around personally, in order to strengthen their bond together. After that, he paid his respects to his dead brothers and father in the crypt of Winterfell with the rest of the Household. He silently wished that Lyanna was there to support him, but she was not. All that stood with him were the statues of Eddard, Brandon, his brothers and Rickard, his father. Ben did not let himself crumble over these thoughts. Peace had come at last, though at a great price, and it was there to stay. He wondered if that was simply what he wished to believe, maybe war would come again on the morrow. Maester Luwin always said that the future could never be known with certainty, all men could do was prepare for it.
A routine settled on Winterfell soon enough, Cersei seemed pleased, as far as she could be pleased, she usually complained that Winterfell was too hot inside and too cold outside, or that the women of her age gave her little talk. Yet she did not seem frustrated or angry at the ordeal. "One who complains is one who is not completely disillusioned by their situation." Luwin quoted when Ben asked him for advice. Time started to fly, and Cersei found respite from her slow and rough adaptation to life in the North in the arms of Benjen.
In the next months, Ben rallied able men to form Winterfell's council. Artos remained as Castellan for his good service; Lord Smalljon Umber, who became lord of Last Hearth after his father's death in Robert's rebellion, became the Justiciar; Jeor Mormont, lord of Bear Island, became Master-at-Arms; Lord Roose Bolton became treasurer, and was allowed to do his duties at his home in the Dreadfort, Ben bore no ill will to the man, but Starks and Boltons are old enemies, and Roose Bolton always sent a chill down Ben's spine; A Skagosi going by the name of Thoryd Stane became master of whisperers, his story was long and arduous, and Maester Luwin even showed interest in writing a short booklet on the man's life, from his birth in the islands of Skagos to his rise to fame and power thanks to his deceitful deeds in favor of the Starks. With this council formed, duty became the norm of Benjen's life. The North was no small parcel of land, and petty issues between Houses sprung up constantly.
Outside the cold North: Robert named Tywin hand of the king, a news that pleased lady Cersei but brought anger to the council, who talked of Jon Arryn or even Benjen as better names. Ben hushed their complaints, citing that will of the King towers all others, but a certain doubt creeped in his mind. Jon Arryn succesfully had a daughter named Syrella with Lysa Tully, though he still lacked a son. Benjen took his time to raise a sepulcher, like the first men of old, in memory of his departed family.
Cersei's belly grew, and some old septas confirmed that she was with child. After long months with mood swings and occasional vomiting, one of which featured Ben's favorite fur coat as target, she gave birth to a healthy daughter with no further complications. Cersei insisted that the girl be named Lacey, the name of a dear friend of hers from Casterly Rock, Ben saw no reason to disagree and Lacey Stark became the second Stark in Winterfell. Ben thought of Lyanna again,Shouldn't you be in Winterfell? Watching our pups grow together? He sometimes asked away while looking out the balcony of his dormitory. But the thoughts remained as thoughts, duties were abound, as always.
In taverns of Winter Town, where a few daring mummers went, rumors spread about King Robert's adultery, his title as the Hammer of the Roseford made him famous with many a ladies, resulting in the appearance of bastards around many places which Robert was forced to recognize. The Queen, Jennelyn Fowler, was humiliated and grew to despise her whoring King. Benjen felt a certain shame over this, it seemed quite unkingly, and Ned would've reacted angrily when hearing such news, but he did nothing. King's Landing was far away, and Robert was the elder, he should know better himself. Cersei only said that she was better off with a honorable and loyal Lord Paramount than a whoring and drunkard King. Ben felt a chill run down his spine, just thinking of Cersei being with Robert was frightful. She'd kill him for sure,he thought.
As months went by, Cersei had grown depressed. She remembered her deceased brother and wondered how her father felt. The nans said it was due to the birth, sometimes women felt increasingly anxious and sad after their duty, the reason was hard to discern, but that did not make it any less true. As to soothe heir ailing heart, Ben took Cersei on walks around the ancient woods of Winterfell, they stayed together for hours on end watching the weirwood, wondering how old these trees are, and if those sap drops were truly tears or not. With time, Cersei forgot about her ills and decided to exchange letters with her father. She came to understand that her home was now in the North, besides her Stark husband in the cold and never moving North, but that did not mean she couldn't have the pleasure of hearing from Casterly Rock every once in a while.
A year later and little else happened, Cersei had become pregnant again, yet the belly was bigger than the first time. The septas joked of a direwolf dwelling in Cersei's womb, something which Cersei heard during one of his worse mood swings, she insisted that they had to be "sent off to the Wolfswood to take care of the wolf pups they enjoy talking about so much". Ben had to spend hours with her to smoothen her wrath, and the wiser older septa told them that, unlike what the foolish young maids thought, Cersei was probably holding twins in her belly. Cersei grew ecstatic at the news, telling Ben how the two twins would grow to be like her and her brother, she even said that Ben could name them as he wished. After a long and difficult labor, the two babes came out healthily, a boy and a girl. Ben decided to name the boy Bernarr, as a homage to an old King of the Trident who Ben had fawned over in his youth, and the girl Lyarra, in remembrance of his dear sister, who was still in Pentos. Bernarr Stark became the heir of House Stark.
With the appearance of a heir in the North, many of the vassals rejoiced. And the council of Winterfell was first to congratulate Ben. The Lord of the North was slowly becoming a man and Cersei grew endeared with the quiet peaceful life in the North and her power as Lady Paramount.

Rickard Karstark died, his son Harrion Karstark overtook his duties as High Lord of the Karhold. Benjen attended the burial of the man and paid his respects to the family. The Karstarks had not been the most able vassals in these times, yet they remained Starks in their own right.
Cersei gleefully told Ben that her father had wed again, apparently he had fallen in love with a maid. Ben did not expect Tywin Lannister to be one that could be swooned over by a maid, but apparently, he was. Had the game of thrones gotten so soft that even Tywin could be allowed a moment to feel? The thought of it was sweet, and Cersei seemed happy enough about the ordeal.
Maester Luwin bore news of the death of Doran Martell, his gout had gotten the better of him, and after a short period of illness, he faded away from the realm of the living. Ben had only seen the man once or twice and never talked to him, but Luwin told him of his great ability with courtly intrigues. "The Prince moved more strings than he'd seem to, and he was always a man who sympathized with the Targaryens. If you permit the comment, my Lord, Robert has lost a powerful enemy that he did not even suspect of being so." Arianne Martell, Doran's only daughter, became Princess of Dorne at the tender age of twelve namedays. Oberyn Martell, known as the Red Viper, took the regency without hassle.

A raven announced that Robert would come for a formal visit to Winterfell. It had been two years since Ben had last seen him, Cersei was not glad to hear of this. "That womanizing King is probably here to see your finest collection of Northern whores, dear Ben. Don't trust him one bit." She told him when she heard the news. Ben dismissed his angry wife's thoughts, saying that Robert had been a friend of his brother and was also their King.
When the King arrived, he was accompanied by the Queen and a part of his household. The King and Queen gave a good show, both in warm yet glamurous garments, entering the dark grey castle of Winterfell and giving it life. Artos, the Castellan, said that he'd have to stretch the reserves a little more than he'd like in order to please the coming royalty, but Ben saw no problem in this. He was recieving the King after all.
In his stay, Robert visited the crypts of Winterfell, where he stayed for hours on end. Benjen accompanied him in the thought, he asked Robert if all was well in the South, to which the King replied with a nod and a few calming words. Robert's mood took a turn when he saw the three children of Benjen, speaking high praise of Lacey Stark's fiery red hair. "A beautiful fusion of the stark North and the golden Westerlands!" he said cheerfully as the Queen took the twin babes in her arms to nurse them. Cersei thanked him reluctantly and joined the Queen with Lacey. Ben was grateful that Cersei had not done any odd comments on Robert's progeny. But the Lannister wanted her debt paid, and with a sharp look, Ben saw that she wanted Robert out of the room. Ben invited the man to his room, as to have a private conversation on the events in King's Landing.
There, Robert confessed that he was not here for a mere formal visit to the Starks. He wanted to name Benjen warden of the West. Benjen complained at the instant the title was uttered but the King would have none of it. "Tywin already is Hand of the King, too much power for one man. Some lords of the Westerlands bear more loyalty to the King than to the Lannisters, they will have the right to follow the Warden of the West in case of open rebellion." Robert explained. Ben saw some logic in it, but he still thought the move would be too risky, and also a fair excuse for Tywin to rebel. Robert only laughed at the thought, "Let him rebel then, the Vale is loyal to me, the Reach is in debt with me, the Stormlands are my brother's and the North is owned by my dearest friend. What battle is he going to win?" Ben did not react at the comment, he bit his lip and pondered. Robert put a hand upon his shoulder, "Do not worry, Ben. I do this for the Realm's good. Tywin may win the war of intrigue, but he will never start another war of bloodshed. That is all I want to guarantee, for your family's and many other's sakes."
Ben looked at Robert, the man gave him an endearing look, like an older brother looks at his innocent younger brother. The two spoke little more, and the granting of Wardenship was announced in the dining hall of Winterfell. Word spread quickly, and the King would have to prepare for the eventual consequences that would come in King's Landing. Cersei, of course, reacted spitefully, scorning Robert at his back. "A King that does not reward the man that does most of his duties for him is no King." she said. Ben did not reply to her insults to the King, he only worried about what the future could bring next.
And, a few months later, the news of Stannis Baratheon being sent to take the black did not ease his wavering heart at all.
And this is this week's true update after the wedding addendum. Time is starting to fly, albeit slowly. The next update will deal with the news of Stannis, then after that I imagine that time will start flowing quite quickly again. Times of trouble ahead? Or will Robert be able to keep things steady in the capital? All we can do is hope.
great update! I liked it... btw, who is the heir to the Iron Throne? and was there a reason for Stannis taking the black? who is the Lord of Dragonstone now?

Sometimes an event fires and a claim to Dragonstone will be given to the King of the Iron Throne. AI Robert must have gotten it and tried to revoke AI Stannis's lordship. AI Stannis rebels then lost and then off to the wall he goes. This is only one of the possibilities.
Nice to see Cersei warming up to life in the North, and particularly to Benjen. Let us hope, however, that the twins do not take overmuch after their mother and dearly departed uncle.
That last section seems to be hinting at dark tidings to come for the future, though. I don't see Tywin as being the sort to take being spurned out of one of his ancestral titles lying down, and unlike in canon he has no familial obligations tying him to the Iron Throne this time around. Mayhaps the Lion is about to go on the prowl once more?
This inspired me to do another Ned Stark game. Not nearly as interesting. Now I want to know what Stannis did, more accusations of illegitimate children?

He could spend an entire afternoon naming out illegitimate children, Robert really fancies ruining his marriages.
Anyway, thanks for the feedback and interest, I might post the next update today, monday or tuesday. Stannis takes the black and the first tournament of the North happens in White Harbor!
This world is too peaceful it seems, Tywin is not the sort of man to have his family's ascenstral title snatched away from him and let it go. War perhapes? Also nice to see Cersi not being too much of her canon self, up in the north.
Ooh, I remember this one from back in the day! It seems the author isn't really that active in the AAR scene, though -- which is a shame, because this one looked like it had real promise
Wow, I'm surprised to see that some folks have checked this ancient AAR. Sadly, I abandoned it due to intense burnout all those years ago. University was harsh on me and I was too much of a perfectionist with my own writing. I constantly felt that what I wrote was not good enough, oh well, a younger mind's thoughts.
Hey Nycliff, sadly, I don't believe I can continue this story. I've lost the savegame ages ago. I might come up with a few more chapters, if only to give this some sort of closure, though it was a long-term AAR. Thank you for praising my storytelling, I put at least two to three hours of work per update, usually more. It was tiring work but one I wish to continue doing soon. With an AAR with two updates per week.

I'm back for now, checking out what's going on in the AAR scene. I was thinking a lot about doing an AAR about Aegon's Conquest and later Targaryens. But I'm still exploring what might give some good material for an AAR.
