New RPS article, reading it now: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/20...is-happening-heres-ten-things-we-know-so-far/

This I find pretty promising:
According to the designers I spoke to, CK3 already “far surpasses” the range of features CK2 had on day one, and already covers content from many of its predecessor’s DLC (for example, the 867AD start date from Old Gods). Still, expect “depth rather than breadth” – I get the feeling Paradox want to make a statement with the level of polish at launch, rather than recreating seven years of CK2 expansions.

If it doesn't have at least as much content on release as CK2 does right now why are they releasing it when they are?

Also I enjoy that they have specifically said they aren't going to include "Deus Vult" because it's too toxic. It's hard to express "damn this PC culture" without sounding like you're a fascist, but I guess we're only allowed to conquer in the name of religion if they exist in a fictional world that's lightyears from earth.

Stream said they "cut" some stuff, but that they are confident that it's the less popular stuff. No more Nomads or Merchant Republics.

Map though is bigger than CK2.

Shame about Merchant Republics but i'm not going to cry for Nomads.

I assume retinues if they exist will be changed since that was a mechanic the devs didn't like.
I could see it becoming a "professional army" slider/law where you can gradually create a standing army (like the Hungarian Black Army) at the cost of less levies and higher drainage of your personal treasury

That is something that could be done, like professionalism in EUIV but more impactful and tied to character such as high material value.

Because to include everything from CK2 in CK3, plus all the new stuff would mean adapting many mechanics they dislike to the CK3 engine, and would allow people to buy a more complete game than CK2 plus every DLC at a lower price.

There's no reason to keep the bad mechanics if they want to replace them with good mechanics, so long as they actually replace them with good mechanics. Throw out everything east of the indus, I'm sure nobody will miss the subcontinent and they can spend that time importing good republican gameplay.

Your point about us being able to purchase everything from CK2 at a lower price than CK2 + DLC is how steam sales works.

"they are confident that it's the less popular stuff"

Like they were confident in how Imperator: Rome mechanics are quite good :D

The phrase "Deus Vult" was barely mentioned in the game anyway. They'll still have Crusades and holy wars.

And as to why they are releasing it now rather than with 7 more years of content? Because they don't have 7 years to bugfix everything they'd have to add? They've already got far more than CK2 had at release (I see foci from WoL, pagans from TOG, probably Muslims from SoI, just from those screenshots and short article). And are adding additional content that isn't in CK2 at all at the moment (e.g. the skill trees, or the much more user-friendly UI). At some point you have to finalize your features list and say "this is what we are going to have," or your game becomes the next Duke Nukem Forever.

And a lot of current CK2 stuff is kind of a kludgy mess. Merchant Republics and Nomads were both mentioned specifically, and it's no coincidence that those are probably the two most blatant examples of shoehorning mechanics into an engine that wasn't designed for them (leading to weirdness like random OPM nomad being an emperor-tier and thus equal in prestige to the Byzantine Emperor).

The overton window has moved so far left in the past few years that questioning such orthodoxy automatically places you outside the acceptable norms, regardless of your actual beliefs. And unless if they're going to remove Allahu Akbar along with it (which I doubt they will), then it's obvious why they did it. This reminds me of when the EU4 forums banned usage of Keblob (which I consider to be the canary in the coal mine for stuff like this) but not other food-based adjectives such as baguette, kraut, etc; it's an obvious double standard, and it's even more obvious why it's done.

RPS made sure to let the devs know they'd write more articles if they stepped out of line.

People blaming the memes for this are missing the point, the memes aren't the problem, it's the journos ginning up controversy that are. Was anyone really offended about Deus Vult in a game famous for getting players to the moral standard of a rabid sewer rat?

If I recall correctly, the journos also went after HOI4 modders a while back too.

Promising?!
"2. It’s easier to play than Crusader Kings 2. Sort of."
If anything the article is extremely worrying , i am not interested in dumbed down version of their previous games. You could say oh its just streamlined not dumbing down! It's never the case ever, it always end up with a less than satisfying experience.

If the game was as complicated as HOI 3 or Vic 2's economy, I would be glad to hear that the following game of the series would be "easier". However, there is nothing "difficult" about CK2 what so ever. I mean, if you don't know that a pissed off spymaster could get you killed, or why your vassals hate you after you revoked 10 or so title, it means that you are brain dead.
