I posted something about this a while ago on the EU2 forum, but it should matter more here since this game is about people rather than countries (hooray!). I assume that in CK you will play "through" the current head of the dynasty. What will the mechanisms be to encourage you to play in the same way as that man would, with his own agenda and a limited lifespan?

The extreme solution would be to make each new "king" feel like an entirely new game. When the old king dies he is put on the high score table of kings from all over Europe; if he comes high up, maybe that adds to the familiy's prestige. Then the score is reset to zero, and as much as possible changes when the new chap takes over. Reflect his different goals in different weightings to the scoring system, so one king does well for being rich, another for being pious. And let the diplomatic relations and the relations with your vassals be reshaped by the friends the new king made in his minority. And bring in a mission or two that each king must start and finish in his own lifetime, with a title ("lionheart") as a reward.

Some things could be done to the interface to reflect the different reigns. Certainly always have the name of the current monarch visible, at the top of the screen. Change the colour of the interface as he gets older; green at the start, maybe to gold for the prime of life, then fading to grey. Or entwine everything with foliage like an illuminated manuscript and have that change from spring to winter as the king ages.

Thanks very much.
For some more atmosphere, how about a couple of pictures, when each king dies, illustrating whether he made it into heaven or hell.

This is one of the better ideas I've heard for some time. I hope Paradox will adopt this...

Great idea!! But just a question: how can you control the relations made by the new king during his minority, i.e., before being the king?

Maybe you can't, always a problem for a parent. I think this could make a very nice game balancing mechanism. If you grow too powerful the wrong way, the kid turns against you and associates with the wrong kind of people, so you are forced to take the game in a different direction when you die. Or devote energy to bringing the kid up to think like you, and the game can proceed smoothly.

The little chap's mother's family should affect his alliances; I assume this was part of the purpose of royal marriages. Another possibility would be sending him out to be fostered, although I may be mixing up my history here.

Hmmm, if he was a successful king, then I would assume Hell. :D

This is getting better and better! Too bad there are a lot of people out there that won't like it...

Hmm... maybe we can throw in some AD&D rules, and voilá! :D

As silly as it sounds, I'd love to have a Civ-like scoring system when you end "Your ruling is comparable to the one of Louis the Saint" or whatever

Interesting ideas. Let me take a couple of them:

The color of the monarch's name is genius. I think that this will give you the feeling you have in EU2 when you know your super-monarch is going to die and the next is an idiot. Now, you have the color to keep that fact in your mind. You keep glancing up and seeing the dark grey name and saying, c'mon, one more year! Just make it one more year!
That being said, are monarch death dates at all randomized?

The other idea I want to address is the heaven/hell one. Instead of causing a huge history/religious problem, instead have a picture of a mass being sung in the monarch's name when they die. The better they were, the more elaborate the mass and the more people in attendance. Thus, if you were terrible, There would be a small church, with a priest, and a couple people mourning. A great ruler would be in a cathedral, with a horde of priests, the bishop, dozens of mourners, candles everywhere...

If the dynastic system is dynamic then a good guess would be that their lifespans would be random. But your point is well taken for the start of the game and any scenarios becasue they would start out with RL monarchs.:)
