woo new rome aar

Romanorum theatrum
I hope I don't bore you folks to death, I can be sorta dusty sometimes. I mostly want to share my crazy schemes and wild ideas, I taught myself how to play so you can bet some weird stuff is going to happen! My goal was to conquer the world as fast as I could manage, while avoiding as many civil wars as possible, to never lose a single war, and to colonize as much land as possible as early as possible!

I am sure you are already familiar with how puny Rome starts off looking, I decided right away I wasn't having any of that! War with Magna Graecia was sought, and quickly won while Epirus fumbled about clumsily pretending to help but ultimately being rather useless. Peace was made with Magna Graecia losing Ager Brutittus and a few gold pieces while the war against Epirus was renewed.

Another legion was being trained to begin our splash onto the world scene when something very interesting happened. Dalmatae became split during the earliest civil war I have ever seen! Dalmatae and Scodra were loyal to while Taulanti was held by some doubtless horrible rebel scum.

Quintus Aemilius Papus, our fine new consul, hurriedly led an army across our tiny fleet to besiege Dalmatea while the silly Illyrians fought amongst themselves. Dalmatae and Scodra were quickly taken, while Taulanti was being sieged by loyalists. Much to my bemusement, once the siege was successful the Illyrian capital moved to Taulanti and I was given Scodra and Dalmatae for peace, woo me! Even more amusing, Epirus whom I still shared a war with, quickly annexed the weakened loyalists. This led to my conquest of Epirus and complete ownership of Dalmatae within a few short years of starting.

Quite an exciting start I think, our fine consul is nonplussed however, as apparently ruling Rome is much less exciting than his current ambition to be army quaestor! At least he isn't a filthy populist, how I despise them! A batch of Velites was hastily assembled to begin goading our barbarian neighbors into moving further north onto a nice little reservation we had set aside for them, we made sure to give them some nice blankets for the trip and enslaved any who stayed.

Colonization was soon well underway, Bononia and Liguaria both turning a mighty red, while I notice Dalmatae can colonize 4 provinces by itself, more Velites are sent to rile up barbarians and our tiny little roman empire is on its way to greatness!

Colonization proceeds smoothly, red is bubbling and spilling over its borders to infect new areas. New colonies are gained around Dalmatae and some filthy trouser wearing gauls were forcibly evicted from their homes, we burned their shacks and chased them off. Aedui annexed their neighbor to the north, and it was decided for the sake of continuity we would let them live for now. An army of 8000 horse archers and 8000 cavalry was trained to stand guard over our new gallic territories while the principes ambled towards new conquests.

New laws were enacted cutting corruption and bringing new taxes into our lands. Most importantly Lex Gabinia was put into effect, those pirates annoy me to no end as they spawn on one side of rome then the other in perpetuity. I have a plan for that however, as my navy grows ever larger. One depressing thing occurred, the Macedonians managed to colonize Paeonia as a result of my dustup with them, provinces were to be gathered but some big scary Macedonian general convinced me I only really wanted their gold right now. Thankfully the senate is full of angry old men willing to let me war whomever I desire, if only I could start a war against populists! They do however approve the end of our alliance with Massilia, and the end of their tribute to us. Rome has no allies, no vassals, only enemies yet to fall to our might! In a rather pointless gesture, they ally themselves with Macedonia, forcing me to accept they have no more feelings for Rome and as such they will feel our sword next!

WAR! The senate has called and I have answered, they claim Carthage is too powerful and must be broken. Sounds like a good romp, I hate those stupid jerks anyways. A surprise attack is prepared as my most devious commander and 16000 of his men are loaded aboard my tiny navy and sent to Iberia. Meanwhile my peacekeeping cavalry legion has been completed and is stationed next to Massilia while my heavy infantry amble down to Emporion to call on our late allies...

Everything has fallen into place and war has been declared, first on Massilia, then on Carthage. Iberia quickly falls to my relentless assault and the fabulous General Agis Epidid pictured later, takes position in Gadira to repel the inevitable counter attack. Meanwhile, Massilia quickly yields and surrenders Emporion and some gold to our might, the Carthaginians refuse to grant us Iberia and obviously desire a more sound thrashing. Their navy is over fussing about by Gadira to prevent me from attacking (as if I had any desire to) so I land my 4th legion, fresh from creation in Carthage and quickly sack it and the surrounding territory. Again peace is sought, but Carthage refuses and sends their navy after mine leaving Agis Epidid to move into northern africa to rack up some warscore. After brutally annihilating their armies attempting to attack across the strait, they are severely weakened and Carthage reluctantly cedes its Iberian territory.

Here you can see conquering hero, Agis Epidid hoping to take advantage of a rebellion in Lusitani to conquer both countries in one fell, naughty swoop. Speaking of which, the rest of the world is apparently terrified of us, this is how we know we are on the right track! I say let them eat cake!

Our eyes fall upon colonial territories from afar in need of our strong leadership, Thracia and Macedonia will likely fall next barring the unforseen! Or perhaps Agis Epidid will go nuts in Iberia and bring some culture to that fine area. Nobody truly knows, not even myself!

I think I can use 10 screenshots per post so lets just throw some country info in to show the current state of affairs. Currently we (I love that royal we) possess 2 navies, one located on each side of modern Italy to slay sea brigands, 17 ships anchored at Rome and 13 anchored in Apulia. We hold the banners of 6 legions, numbering 88000 strong. 1 peace keeping legion of 16000 horse and 5 war legions of 12k-15k heavy infantry mixed with archers.

Our cultural dominance is currently nonexistant, something to be worked on in the future. Our religion teeters on the brink of losing its majority holding, this too will hopefully change for the better in the future.

A list of our fine consuls so far, thankfully no populists and all relatively able men, they have helped propel us into a strong start to begin our world conquest!

I am ashamed to say we are as dumb as a rock while other nations zoom ahead, at least we have a strong tax base and lots of able bodied men to conquer these advanced nations. I have no idea how to change this, I never can manage to lead Rome into technological superiority without killing off those smarter than me :eek:o

I hope this is a good start so far, feedback is appreciated! Also if anything about my AAR is strange or poorly executed please tell me so I can fix it, thanks! UNTIL NEXT TIME

edit: Fixed the humongous images, hope it helps out!

Great work. Those were certainly fast, successful wars. :)
Also, I think it's 20 screenshots per post, but I'm not completely sure. :D

That is a good start indeed! The tribes are easy to defeat a long as there isn't one whho has cannibalized others around it, which is rare though as they are then prone to rebels. I always use the house rule to not conquer tribes unless I border them.

20 screenies per post, thats the moderator limit. Just one advice ... convert the screenies into JPG files with something like 80% compression. Like this, in PNG format, this one post is worth 15 MB of images. Can take ages for some ppl to load.

Indeed, it's 20 pictures max per post and you may not post a new update immediately after to bypass that rule.

Great work. Those were certainly fast, successful wars. :)

I sort of glossed over this war since it was so slow actually, my pimp commander just chilled in gadira killing all the silly carthaginians who had terrible leaders for some reason. I think it actually lasted the better part of 2 years before I became fed up with their unwillingness to hand me Iberia and built a legion to specifically sack their land territories. Probably the most boring war I have ever fought against them, once their armies all died crossing the strait they had no manpower and I rolled them.

achab: thanks so much! I hadn't even thought about this to be honest and will have to make sure I start using a less demanding format :(

qorten: ahh, I see, I got this game after revisiting EU2 and figured what the heck, I oughta be able to manage. Needless to say, my first game ended up with a ton of civil wars and run by populists. In later games I realized spreading your culture can take a long time, so I made an effort to annex barbarians in frontier areas as early as possible.

One minor thing I totally forgot to mention, that dustup with Macedonia? That was the result of me annexing Magna Graecia who was allied with Macedonia and going for a land grab at the time. They were at war with Achaea and I saw a weak frontier and rushed them. Their army fled to paeonia and riled the barbarians there and since the culture level was so much higher they got to colonize it :( Then, some crazy martial 11 commander came back from achaea with an army of 35k and my silly little 7 looked quite bad and I took their gold and ran with an easy peace!

I will probably wait a couple days to update, I don't want to go too fast and I will fix those pictures, thanks a ton guys hope you enjoy it!

This will be sort of a mini update, since the next part is pretty involved!

When we left, Carthage had just suffered a terrible defeat and Agis was greedily eying some barbarians, any guesses to what happened? Yep, he went nuts! Both of those barbarians were quickly brutalized and brought under our fine rule, they eagerly joined our republic bringing able military commanders to bolster our war machine. Boredom quickly ensued, being at peace with our closest rival and neighbors were greedily assessed.

Here is the only reason why I continue to suffer Macedonia to live, general butt stomper. This guy scares the living daylights out of me, its like he was born to slaughter people, all muscle, no refinement, no grace. But wanting to become ruler and having reduced loyalty could prove useful to me... He is 56, how much longer can he live? I am torn on how to deal with this menace, lets ignore it and hope it goes away!

At least our senate is still cooperative even as my poor civic party struggles to draw breath. I try, unsuccessfully to send the leader of the populist party off on a suicide mission, with 1000 velites deep into barbarian territory. It fails miserably, he simply returns a few months later with around 40 thousand barbarians on his heels, asking us if we missed him. I don't wish to be an evil tyrant, but sometimes the urge is very hard to resist. Maybe he will also go away if I ignore him.

It is a prosperous time of peace, a few new colonies are made, more boredom ensues, barbarians are enslaved as they wander into my territory. Our standing in the world improves slightly from murderous rampaging baby eaters to slightly less murderous rampagaging baby eaters and I can no longer stand it! The senate senses my frustration and tells me to go beat on Carthage some more and the plotting begins.

There isn't much to plot however, since I so badly beat Carthage in the previous war, they still lack much of a military and are led by some dorkus malorkus named Hamilcar who cuts his army to ribbons attacking Gadira, if at first you don't succeed, try, try again! I begin building up a new expedition to assault mainland Carthage while I conquer his puny little islands. Much to my delight, I am interrrupted in my musings by a siege of Liguaria, what is this! Massilia had apparently allied herself with Carthage and was going to protect her big sister.

The hero of this war, pictured below, was deposited in Carthage and proceeded to sack every single province west of Numidia, who was currently under assault by Carthage. See I'm a nice guy like that, I only joined the war to save poor Numidia! Finally Hamilcars ragtag army was chased all the way back to the capital by Agis and was annihilated by mr. hero II. The war is all but won and peace must be concluded. Normally I would take some islands or scrape away at Mauretania, but this time is different.

I have won a complete victory and decide I never really want to be bothered by Carthage again (in retrospect I should have taken Numidia, Hippo Regius, Thapsus and Theveste to really cripple his army and economy) and nearly the entire region of Africa is transferred to my control, everything barring Cinithii, Thapsus, and Carthage herself has been turned a mighty red! Plus this way Agis can continue to shred those armies as they attack Gadira.

One downside to the war, while Agis was busy slaying Carthaginians, Turdetani was quickly conquered by barbarians and suffered a 10% loss of culture, bah. Years of hard work down the drain I decide I will take my frustration out on poor little Tylis. Not only will they make a nice little entryway into asia minor, they will also let me contain Macedonia and build a few new colonies! They quickly fall to my might and the senate brings my next mission.

Finally some sort of challenge! We are tasked to destroy Macedonia, currently allied with Sparta, Pontus, and the Selucid Empire. I currently have about 110 thousand men, I must prepare for this conflict for it will surely be long and arduous.

Will we see our budding empire crushed by a combined Greek assault? Will the consul of Rome be punched out by Helladius Philonid and sent home crying with a bloody nose? Will Rome ever discover a new technology? UNTIL NEXT TIME

Your experience with Carthage mirrors my own, at least with Vae Victis: glass jaw. It's just a matter of timing with them. Macedonia is a tougher nut to crack because of how they love their stack of 24 cohorts, which would be murderous under Helladius Philonid (Hellacious Philonid?), but Macodonia is small and made of rocks and sand, and Rome has lots of men. It's a matter of time.

BTW, I support your wait-until-he-dies plan when dealing with that guy. That's only a bit harder than wait-until-he's-off-on-some-other-war-and-invade-while-he's-gone as far as plans go.

Great work. :) This war should certainly be interesting.

Definitely more to come and here it is! Lots of screenies, bumping my cap here, hopefully I will never need to use so many
Had to edit it quite a few times, didn't realize I went over the limit, I hope everything still came out correctly with the changes.

Last when I left you, we were tasked to humble Macedonia. Now, this was sort of terrifying and for good reason, facing nearly the entire east in a myriad of spiderwebbed alliances, something we decided could be easily exploited! Meanwhile as we planned, a few barbarians in the north were prepared for assimilation, silly gits, they think conquering themselves might do something more than annoy me! An opportunity presents itself in the east while we bully minors, Pontus has become embroiled in civil war. I watch provinces change hands for a bit looking for an opening, but to my dismay (or excitement) the Pontian rebels are soon only left owning Alazones, something they picked up from Rhoxolani some time ago. My army is dispatched to incorporate this nice colonial outpost into my empire, but my plans quickly change when I realize Kleitos Peneid (see: later) is leading the army of 16k rebels. Rhoxolani is attacked instead, and quickly conquered to create a staging point.

We bide our time, hoping his army will shrink a bit but 16k seems to be no problem for poor little Alazones, since it is actually gaining money each month, so our attack is led. We are routed initially, but Kleitos is repelled when he pursues to Rhoxolani and is again defeated when we take the defensive advantage in Alazones. A quick assault and Alazones falls, now the real fun will start. Map below shows what we are looking at for our new target, the Bosporan Kingdom, Pontus, and Selucid Empire (specifically the Bosporan Kingdom) Acidentally took screenshot before, so you cannot see my ownership of Alazones here.

A quick aside, I am extremely jealous of Carthage and their godking, I wish my consuls were so great :( We considered war with them but they have recovered pretty well from the last war so far, and their 65 year old general can't live too much longer ;)

Thankfully I annexed the Pontian rebels, I had figured my 7 martial commander in Thracia would be sufficient to repel any threat from Pontus/Selucid, boy was I wrong. While quickly conquering the Bosporan Kingdom, I see Helladius "Hellacious Felony?" Philonid V 2.0 bearing down on me! I quickly free Kleitos Peneid and Arvirargus Iacid to lead my armies while praying to any gods I can think of.

Even more catastrophic, he charges THROUGH my army after defeat, something I have never seen a commander do, right to my new colony in Crobibzi! Hilariously, or so I thought, I dispatched Arvirargus to attempt to dissuade him from conquering Crobibzi after failing the assault. This titan of a man flees before my lesser commander  even while sieging a fortress with 6 men left defending it (when he assaulted it it only had 200, don't ask how me how they survived) and a huge martial advantage while defending a river with an army nearly the same size!

I thought that was bad enough, here comes his "little brother" for revenge, steam coming out of his ears as he charges into my army. Following him up is the Pontian army, they attacked to meet within the day against poor Kleitos. Meanwhile more Selucid armies are on their way, as if Kleitos isn't having enough fun fighting these 70k strong tagteams.

At this time, I am pretty scared and willing to accept any peace, even a tribute if necessary to get these huge armies away from me! My consul is SO hated, the senate won't consider peace or any diplomatic dealings with Pontus or the Selucid Empire. The only diplomatic action I am allowed is to declare war on Carthage, who was going crazy with bloodlust, more on that later. Even when succeeded by a populist the senate totally refuses to accept any form of peace although they do become pliant enough to allow me to encourage disloyalty and a few other minor actions.

By now the 4th or 5th huge Selucid army has pulled up to slam against my walls (note: battlegod Asheri's "little brother" also charged through my lines when defeated to Maedi where he rampaged through Moesia Superior for a little while) and I am really becoming nervous that Kleitos, hero of the republic, will lose a battle and a floodgate of angry Greeks will be unleashed on us, I can do nothing but wait and hope. Below you can see Asheri in the top right corner, for some reason he was so ashamed by his flight from Arvirargus, he refused to engage me in battle again and staked out in Tomis for the rest of the war.

Again, the second threat to my republic has self neutralized, here you can see both of the Selucid Empires best leaders chilling in my barbarian territory after fleeing before Arvirargus, where they refused to reenter the war (very confused why this happened, they certainly would have broken me with ease had they continued to attack me) Meanwhile, as you can see above, the other Pontian and Selucid Empire armies continue assaulting me simultaneously, the only thing saving Kleitus from a loss, since the Pontian army brings with it a -2 strait crossing penalty.

I am slowly realizing this war is very possibly unwinnable, I must have massacred at least 100k men from Pontus and Selucia however their manpower refuses to decline more than a few thousand at a time! I very nearly decimated 3 of their armies at once but they had ~2500 men left to my ~20000, so the 10:1 extermination event didn't occur

Finally these jerks accept peace, I force them to cede some claim they had on me worth practically nothing and suddenly their legions all are moving again, straight into Tomis to await their navy and return to Selucia. By this time, our peace with the Bosporan Kingdom is up and we quickly annex them fully and do a little cleanup in the area while connecting our barbarian acquisitions in the north. Meanwhile, the real Helladius Philonid has passed away and we make quick work of Macedonia while their allies are trapped in our truce. Epirus is annexed quickly while Kleitos smashes their army and Sparta and some territory is spared, since they won't give it all at once and I don't want the badboy or the hassle of ruling Sparta behind Argolis. We gain a core on Macedonia as a further reward and incentive to continually beat them to a pulp in the future. Macedonia is brown because they rebelled almost immediately after I made peace with them.

Finally our attention is very forcibly turned to Carthage, they have been absolutely itching for a fight, there must have been at least 20 to 30 assassination attempts on various children, commanders, I lost quite a few pontifex maximus', various rebellions were stirred up, the leader of the populist party was made to become more disloyal to the republic (lol) and a child bearing the name of the populist faction leader (Marcus Atilius Regius) was assassinated. Nervii looks almost the same, along with a few other provinces in the Bosporus, overloaded with foreign rebel support. Another funny event, I sadly forgot to screencap, Hannibal was imprisoned in our republic for assassination, but was somehow influencing our elections and he gained a point of finesse doing so. I am beginning to wonder if my computer is on fire and I simply do not realize it yet.

We are pretty pleased to be able to focus on Carthage, their commander has just died and both of their leaders only have 4 martial, I won't even have to ship my heroic generals into Africa to win this one. Their resistance is laughable at best, we chase their home army back to Carthage, preempting his retreats back into his own land, assaulting and taking his fortress, then chasing him into the next province. They did not make the same mistake this time by attacking Gadira, instead they turned tail and ran for Numidia without a single battle (this army is also led by a Hannibal, how many of these guys are there??) That war is quickly over while our republic becomes depleted of manpower, with a war exhaustion of 4, and a pretty bad reputation around 13. We are ready for some peace and colonization which we have been forced to ignore during all these wars!

Colonization has been going off without a hitch, we leap forward and expand quickly, turning more of the world a glorious Roman red. Apparently our war with the Selucid Empire was much more devastating than assumed, many independent nations have sprung up and they have been in a nearly unending civil war. Pontus rebelled and the rebels won, ending their alliance with the Selucid Empire and also ending their independence permanently as I quickly took advantage to conquer the bulk of their provinces while Armenia took the last one.

Egypt went totally nuts, making huge gains in Asia Minor while also attacking Crete and Macedonia while dealing with quite a few civil wars. A few more barbarians were pacified, plans are being made to expand into Britain to quell those querulous scots! Rhoxolani, Dacia and Colchis were allied together, allowing me to make significant gains without any real effort or penalty to me. Another war with Carthage was engaged but they offer no resistance at all anymore, I doubt they will remain independent for longer than 20-30 more years.

Our eastern colonies were finally connected to Rome, bringing a huge income boost to our republic, a long awaited connection to Iberia should soon be completed, bringing with it a mighty income capable of propelling us to ultimate victory! Only 2 highly contentious (yet so far uncontended) countries remain in the world, Egypt and Armenia, we hope to begin pacification of them soon.

For now, I leave you with some statistics, I know I love them and I hope you will as well! First off, our worst fear has been realized, our religious majority fell to a populist power!

Our colonies and a few conversions have helped us continue to maintain a slim majority culturally and religiously over our lands. We have owned most of our lands enough to maintain permanent ownership and have built up a strong military to match not only our income, but our vast reserves of manpower and land.

With a maximum manpower of 250k and a standing army of 278k, we are definitely the top dog on the block. We have 11 peacekeeping cavalry armies of 16k mixed cavalry, while the rest are mixed infantry assault armies. Every major region has at least 1 cavalry army, with most of them being located on our barbarian borders.

Even though we have the highest research and income among the world leaders, you would never know it as we are dumber than most barbarians! One day we will be the smartest I swear!!! I am currently trying to build up to get my final stability point, but it costs something ridiculous, over 2500 gold with these stupid populist leaders. At least I am rich enough I don't really have to worry about rebellions much anymore, I can easily pay off any contentious commanders or governors instead of shuffling them so often as I was often forced to before.

As you can see, we are smarter than about half the of the worlds barbarians woo!!!! I will just blame the populists, its clearly their fault and none of my own.

Well geez, that was pretty crazy, I never planned to do such a large update but I kept getting caught in wars and needed a nice spot to break off at. Who knows what will happen next? We are slowly beginning to run out of countries to bicker with.

Will Rome ever be manage to be more technologically advanced than another nation? Will the dirty populists stir up a civil war or perhaps run the country further into the ground trying? Why is the populist faction leader a rival to every single potential consul? UNTIL NEXT TIME

Great work, though a populist civil war now could undo everything you've done.

JDMS: Thanks, I have a few villainous plans up my sleeve for dealing with those populist scum.

Hardradi: I have seen some real odd countries this game that I have never seen before. Most notably, Macedonian Achaia, Greek Parthia, Greek Iberia, Greek Arabia, and (I am pretty sure I saw this) Greek Armenia. Macedonian Achaia made a brief appearance and the rest have been Selucid offshoots, they have been having a real problem keeping their people in line :D
