Hello.

Rome and VV freezes right when the game starts in the main window.
After choosing which faction to play, the game loads ok and goes to the
main screen. Then everything freezes, only the cursor moves.

Only way to get out is alt+delete and close the program.

I have already tried the following things listed in the forums:

1. Updated the latest Nvidia drivers
2. Switched to directx9c
3. Ran the game as administrator and xp compatible mode
4. Tried the game in windowed mode
5. Installed the visual basic
6. Changed multisampling to 0
7. Unplugged all external USB devices.
8. Updated VV to 2.1

Nothing from the above helped so advice at this point would be appreciated.

I suggest you try a complete reinstall outside the system directory path.

First move any valued save games elsewhere. Then uninstall both games, and then manually delete the game directory - this is important. Reinstall Rome - if you use Vista, it's best to choose a new directory like c:\games\rome instead of the suggested path. Then download and install VV from Gamers Gate, and make 100% sure you point it to the same path the game installed into (eg c:\games\rome or whatever you used above) Then apply the 2.1 patch over Rome and VV, again in that same new directory.

OK, can we see a new dxdiag.txt, and the new settings.txt and system.log files from after the reinstall, thanks.

Yep, here are the files attached except the system.txt, which for
some reason can not be attached so it is below.

Well this one's got me, I see nothing wrong anywhere. As a stab in teh dark, try editing settings.txt as follows, changes in bold:

fullScreen=no
shadows=no
shadowSize=1024
multisampling=0
anisotropicFiltering=0
gamma=50.000000
}
sound_fx_volume=100.000000
music_volume=100.000000
scroll_speed=100.000000
camera_rotation_speed=50.000000
zoom_speed=50.000000
mouse_speed=50.000000
master_volume=-1
ambient_volume=50.000000
mapRenderingOptions={
renderTrees=no
}

Nope, still freezes in the main game screen.

I looked at the error.txt file at the logs and it displayed some errors.
Might this have anything to do with the freezing :

I don't think so. Can you uninstall again please, and then just install Rome? If that then works OK, then apply the Rome 1.3 patch and see if it still works OK?

Me either. Maybe you have a bad Rome CD. Can you try it in another machine?

Similar problem

I have a similar problem while playing Rome patch 1.3 , It works well for the first couple of months after I open a saved file, but it always freezes. Sometimes it lets me play for about 2 years and then it freezes and other times it just plays for a month and then freezes at the end of month. It also freezes when I get some notifications like a revolt or the loss of a governor. The only thing that works afterward is ctrl alt delete. Ive tried putting it in compatibility mode and in administrator, I allso have the direct X that comes with the game and the newest driver for my graphics card also service pack 1 for vista. I dont know what else can do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Please start your own fresh thread with full problem and system details, thanks. By system details I mean:

Please run DXDIAG, Save All Info, and post dxdiag.txt here (first delete everything after the Sound Devices section so it will fit). Also post your Rome/settings.txt and Rome/logs/system.log files. Note that if you use Vista and have installed the game in the suggested folder c:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Rome\, the active versions of these last two files will have been redirected by Vista to a non-system directory, like c:\users\[name]\appdata\local\virtualstore\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Rome\. You may have to search your C: drive for them.
