I have been trying to run this on Windows 7 64 bit and the application runs for a few years of game time, I have auto save every 6 months and sometimes it hangs during saving, going back to a previous autosave it will then work from there for a few years and then hang again so I can progress if in a bit of a stuttery way.

I have tried the clear map cache and reverifed from Steam, this did not help.

Looking in the files the top line of the system log thinks I have 0MB of memory instead of 4096 and the error log shows an "Clausewitz Error[texturehandler.cpp:114]: D3DXCreateTextureFromFileEx failed for file: gfx\\interface\\frontend_backdrop.dds with error: Ran out of memory" error.

I have also been getting lots of application hangs on EU3 as well with the same machine, just took and look and the system.log also shows 0MB in that as well.

Thanks,

The 0mb means nothing , ignore it. Rome is 32bit and can only see 4gb, so the count rolls over to 0 at that amount.

Can we also see your settings.txt please?

Hmm, no real clues there, everything looks good. Let's try a complete reinstall.

First move any valued save games elsewhere. Then uninstall both games, and then manually delete the game directory - this is important. Reinstall Rome - choose a new directory like c:\games\rome instead of the suggested path. Then install VV over Rome (ie in the same directory), then apply the 2.3.2 patch over that same directory.

OK, now go into your Steam client and get it to do a Verify Download cache , or whatever it's called. Does that find any problem to fix?

The verify local files always finds files, it puts the install back to as it was before you run the first time and have generated all the map stuff so it wipes all that out and replace the settings etc back to the default value so it really does not help to tell if you have corruped files. Anyway I ran this it reset the game back to default and I still have the problem. The box I get in windows saying that the c++ runtimes has been terminated etc, is there any log anywhere of what the c++ runtime is upto?

Anyother thing, playing about if I resign, reload, resign reload etc (quite alot of times) I start to loose graphics, the picture on the main menu goes and then when I click the savegame to load it the map comes in all gray and play is not highlighed and going back to the menu and into the load screen all the buttons and windows get corrupted and I have to exit the game. So there does seem to be a graphics/memory related problem on my machine.

No idea on your C++ question, sorry, way outta my league. You could try the MS patch for VS C++ as per post 4 here http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum...-or-Rome-Gold-***link-to-MS-fix-in-post-4-***

That aside I agree, you do seem to have a machine problem. Whether it's the video, the driver, Windows itself or something else I'm not sure.

BTW when you uninstalled, did you manually delete ALL files and directories in and under your EU3 directory, before re-installing?

I do remove all the directories, the steam delete local content only leaves the logs and save directories under the eu3 rome dir but I deleted all of them and the eu3 rome directory.

What version and checksum show up after your reinstall? It should be on the main menu, but some people have to go into MP and start as host of a new game to see it.

Go to Windows Update and have it apply all critical AND optional patches. In particular I'm hoping for a disk controller driver update.

Also, you mention you have EU3 issues too; are these the exact same issues, that is hanging on autosave? On either game does it ever happen on a manual save? And what happens with the hang; do you have to kill the game via teh ctl-alt-del menu, or restart the whole machine, or what?

Version on the main menu is v2.32c (IYID), not sure where to find a checksum even in MP mode?

Checked windows update, only ones missing as the ones released yesterday. I have also updated the sound drivers to the a version from the 4th of Jan this year, I will see if there is an updated set of motherboard drivers, that may include a newer disk driver than the one that is there now.

EU3 does not crash during save but I have not played it alot, it has hung a few times with the c++ unexpected termination error and then Windows 7 kills it, if also most of the time has to be killed when I exit the game but I dont see anything in the error log for that one.

Well you have a checksum so there's no point in getting it in MP mode, it'll be the same. It is wrong, it ought to be SWBL.

I'm wrong on this, IYID is right for 2.32c on Steam. My apologies.

Does it only happen with that mod? If so you need to post in their forum.

If it happens when playing unmodded, what version and checksum show on the main game menu (or when you go to host an MP game)?
