I just purchased the steam version of EU:Rome Gold two days ago and since that time I have been unable to play it because the game will fail to load and crash right when it says, "Properly Initialized Map." The Error is....

I have searched both these forums, and the steam forums as well as the entirety of the net for answers all of which have left me completely empty-handed. Please tell me exactly what you will need to see and how to retrieve the information for you so that you could possibly help me in anyway-shape-or form.
I have already tried many silly things such as running as the administrator, resizing the resolution, windowed mode, restarting, uninstalling and reinstalling several times as well as clearing out the cache/maps folder.
I have also installed all the latest drivers, patches, and the latest version of DirectX9 as well as the redistributing package, nothing seems to work.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit(6.1, build 7600) Intel Core Quad 2.66GHz, 8gigs DDR2 RAM, DirectX11, Nvidia Geforce9800 GTX(2 of them in SLI)

Go into the Steam client and use the Verify option, it will try to repair the installation. If that doesn't help or change anything:

Please run DXDIAG, Save All Info, and post dxdiag.txt here (first delete everything after the Sound Devices section so it will fit). Also post your Rome/settings.txt and Rome/logs/system.log files. Note that if you use Vista/Win7 and have installed the game in the suggested folder c:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Rome\, the active versions of these last two files will have been redirected by Vista/win7 to a non-system directory, like c:\Users\[name]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Europa Universalis - Rome\, where [name] is your Vista/Win7 user name. You may have to search your C: drive for them.

I had tried the Steam verify option a couple of times, both with no success. As you asked here are the .txt.

Also for whatever reason my system.log file will not upload so I will just copy paste it below. Thanks.

Erm, no, why would you say that?

Was the settings.txt file above from the Rome folder under c:/Program Files/, or from under the virtual stare as I mentioned in post #2? It looks suspiciously like the one that comes with the game, but because you have Win 7 the real copy is the one that Win7 redicrects to the Virtual Store directory structure. Sorry about the complication but that's Win7 for you ... the alternative is to disable UAC and to run the game as the Administrator user, which gets around that stuff.

The file that I posted as my system.txt is the only one located anywhere on my harddrive - also as you had guessed it was the one for the game. It seems that steam or Paradox has not created any folder under my user data.

Hmm. Try right-clicking on the game icon on the desktop, and setting it to run as Administrator, and to disable desktop composition. Also, edit that settings.txt and change refreshrate=60 .

What checksum are you seeing? You should see it on the main game screen, but failing that on the MP screen.

Well this is a puzzle. As a stab in the dark, let's make sure you have the very latest direct DirectX 9.0c version installed. You have to download the installer (dxwebsetup.exe), save it to a local directory, and then run it.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&DisplayLang=en
Don't worry, it won't overwrite your DX11 but run alongside it just fine.

If that doesn't help or change anything, edit the settings.txt again and change the following:

master_volume=-1
renderTrees=no

This will simplify the graphics a little and turn all sound off. If that helps then we'll have a better idea of where to look further.

The DirectX installer tells me that a newer or equivalent version of it exists. So I bothered to go back and install 9.0c again to be extra sure with no luck and made the changes to the settings.txt once again with no success.

For the past hour I've played with combinations of all the aforementioned theories - all have which have yielded no success.

If you have anymore or last suggestions they would be much appreciated.

Thank you for your time and knowledge.

You specifically used the one I just linked to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&DisplayLang=en ? Because that was new as of June 2010 and should overwrite any previous versions of DX9.

Do you have any other Steam games to try? I ask because I see reports of this error all over the 'net, only on Win7:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1056932
and so on. You might try the JIT fix delailed in this thread as a number of those threads mention C++ and Visual Basic issues.
