  • Europa Universalis: Rome
I bought EU Rome from Wal-Mart and installed it on my laptop. The game worked great once I installed the 1.3 patch. I played several different nations and logged well over 24 hours worth of gameplay. Then, yesterday, the game quit working.

The game starts just fine and loads up. It allows you to select a time period to start or to choose from a saved game. Once you choose a game (it does not matter which) and press play, it loads it and then once the map comes up the game is dead. The cursor moves but nothing in the game responds. The game has to be closed by the task manager which gives the following error:

Please help me get my game working. I was only able to play it long enough to get addicted.

Well I'm not sure why it happened, but I do note your video driver is way old -especially for a Vista one. The current one is http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_175.19_whql.html assuming 32bit Vista.

If it still happens then, try uninstalling, manually deleting the game directory, then reinstalling in a new directory (such as c:\games\rome).

1. Install DX 9c latest dx10 only dosent work
2. run game as admin and in xp combability mode

i had a lot of trubles in vista too before thows things now works fine

its the same thing in EU3

I am running Vista Ultimate 32-bit.
So far I've tried everything on this forum except for two things. First, I can only update my NVIDIA with an OEM driver for my laptop. I've contacted the company about any updates but they have not responded yet. Second, I have installed DX 9c multiple times but it doesn't change anything and the dxdiag.txt still only shows DX 10 installed.

The mystery to me is that the game played perfectly fine on this system for several days before the freeze problem happened. I have a very stable setup and despite the Vista stigma I rarely have any problems with Vista. This caused me to dig around and I found a security update (KB936181) that was installed automatically to my system the same day the freeze problem began. This update is for the Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 and according to the Microsoft knowledge base it has caused a number of problems and compatibility issues in Vista. They have a "so called" fix (941833), but it didn't do the trick.

Once again, the game loads perfectly fine. It allows you to choose your time period and nation or choose a saved game. Once you choose it appears to load just fine, but once the map comes up the game is frozen. The cursor will move but the game is frozen and must be shut down manually. I've tried compatibility modes, running as administrator, installing game on the C drive directly, just to name a few more for the record. I am still open to any more suggestions but I kinda suspect the Windows update killed it. If anyone knows anything please reply. I would hate to have to write off this great game.

You don't say if you tried the complete re-install I suggested?
First, I can only update my NVIDIA with an OEM driver for my laptop. I've contacted the company about any updates but they have not responded yet.
You could try www.omegadrivers.net
Second, I have installed DX 9c multiple times but it doesn't change anything and the dxdiag.txt still only shows DX 10 installed.
That's normal, DX 9 does not replace DX 10 but is there in addition - if you don't get the "missing DLL" error then you have DX9 and that is not your problem..

I did a repair and then reinstall in Program Files. I did a complete uninstall and then reinstalled to the C: drive directly. I also tried turning firewall, virus protection, and malware protection off. I even did a complete virus scan and registry scan and repair.

I installed it from a CD. It never asked for any type of registration code or anything. Does the game have a trial mode? Does it have to run from the CD?

The game does not have a trial mode, does not require the CD, and is not supposed to ask for a registration code.

Did you yet try a new videi driver from omegadrivers? Did you run the game in XP compatibility mode? What about disabling UAC, have you tried that?

I tried installing the omega driver. It runs through the process of installing but when I reboot to complete the process, the computer is still using the old driver. My laptop manufacturer still has not yet contacted me back about their updates. Hopefully they will soon.

I've also tried running the game and the launcher (both and in different combinations) in XP compatibility mode and as administrator.
I also have UAC turned off. Still no luck.

How bizarre, haven't heard that happen before. I am quite sure your problem is the video driver, in whole or part.

The manufacturer of my laptop has finally sent me a response with some real information. Basically, in my words, the laptop I have is a year old and was also discontinued about nine months ago to make way for newer models. Since they don't sell my particular laptop anymore, they don't see the need to update the old video driver (nvd3dum.dll) they have provided. The worst part is that their OEM version of Vista Ultimate 32-bit will only allow their driver to install. In other word, Omega Drivers and even drivers directly from NVIDIA will not install.

In the notes at the Omega Drivers website, the guy mentions that he hasn't provided drivers for laptops but hopefully will soon. Strangely enough the omega driver I did try on my laptop did appear to install, but when I rebooted to complete the installation I was still running nvd3dum.dll. If the guy at Omega does continue his work maybe it will fix my problem.

Do you think it could be a bad registry value linked to the game or the video driver?

Erm, no, I don't. What makes you ask?

On the laptop I owned before this one, there was a bad registry value that caused a Sim City game that had worked for months to stop working.

I'm just looking for any other possibilities cause apparently I can't upgrade my two year video driver. If the video driver is the problem and not something else, then I have to write the game off as a loss.

Nasty situation to be in, sorry about that! Terrible support you got for a new machine, I have to say.

BTW the fact that the video driver is using the same module name nvd3dum.dll doesn't mean it didn't update; it's the version and date of that module that would change, not the module name itself.

But yes, I agree it looks like you need to either run the game on a different machine, make them change the machine for one they'll support properly, or take the game back to Walmart and get your money back.
