Not really, no-one who's had the sort of problem you had has reported back either way. FWIW I agree with you, to me there seemed to be a problem with some editions of Rome:Gold, in one case previous to yours the same fix worked - use Rome + VV instead of Rome Gold.

Does Tech Support have any thoughts as to whether it is worthwhile trying patch 2.2 to see if it solves the problem described in this thread? You must know what sort of problems the patch fixes.

I can only say that after I was able to get the 2.2 patch and load it, the game still does not work.
