Imagine a new Rome, but made with all the experience of Crusaders Kings 2. Furthermore, imagine a Rome II in which you play as a house, and not as a nation. It just didn't make any difference, to me, what chars would become consul or obtain public offices, in Rome, as long as they weren't populists. What I dream of is playing a house, maybe in the same spirit of the CK 2 The Republic DLC. You obtain lands, invest in trade, bribe senators to obtain public offices, obtain a command and go through the cursus honorum. The ultimate roman roleplaying / strategy game.

Roman politics, especially during the twilight of the republic, are very interesting. Just think of Cicero, Cato of Utica, Catiline, Julius Caesar... so many great characters in the space of a century or so. I think a Rome II is bound to happen someday. Perhaps after CA's Rome TW II, as with Sengoku.

I have no inside knowledge of what goes on at Paradox, but I can almost guarantee you that Rome II is at least in the planning stage, if not actually being worked on right now. Whenever Paradox next announce big titles (don't they usually announce stuff at things like E3?) Rome II will surely be among them.

Make a gift of EU Rome Gold to five friends.

I'm guessing here:

- The next major release will either be HoI4 or EU:Rome 2.
- Paradox tend to release a big game every year.
- No big titles announced for 2014 yet.
- Since HoI3 just got a new expansion, maybe we will not get a new HoI game already in 2014?
- Paradox released Sengoku about the same time Shogun 2: Total War was released. Rome 2; Total War is released later this year. Maybe EU:Rome 2 for 2014?

I just hope that they inform themselve about how the republic and later the pricipate worked.

I suggest listening to the history of rome podcast. Really.

Create a history thread and inform us. :)

I'm betting HOI4 over Rome 2....Another game to compete with TW R2?

The games are so different, though. I am not sure if they really are competing over the same crowds. In any case: fans of Paradox will without doubt purchase their games no matter what Creative Assembly dishes out.

EDIT: That was not elegantly put. No doubt they are catering to much of the same audience as they are both historic strategy games. What I meant so say is that anyone who knows anything knows that buying Rome II: Total War is no reason to not buy a Rome title from Paradox. They are different experiences, and might even fullfill each other. At least that is my opinion.

With EU4 coming out this year, Hearts of Iron is the major strategy franchise (Vicky, CK, EU and HOI) without a sequel for the longest so probably that? But you never know, some of the more obscure paradox titles might take centre stage.
If it's the success of the first one that has people doubting, remember that Vicky 1 was pretty obscure and Paradox thought the sequel would be a financial failure. Now it's one of Paradox's biggest sellers.

Paradox have REALLY tightened up their marketing and presentation, though. Rome II is certainly a possibility and might do well indeed (in fact, I am perplexed every time PDS makes an announcement and it's not Rome II).

Not that I actually WANT Rome II, especially if it's CK2: Roman Edition. I'd vastly prefer a HoI4, but it's probably years away still.

I bet we will have ROME 2 not with the current state of CK2 but jus prior to CK3, so it would be like a test of new engine like Sengoku prior to CK2.

But since Rome was a failure commercially, they could logically attribute it to competing titles however different they are.

Rome wasn't a failure, it was profitable.

We don't know if Rome 2 would be a major title in the series either, it could adopt one of these smaller titles like Sengoku or March of the Eagles and follow them.

The time has come for Rome II and also a Dark Ages again to lead into Old Gods.
