Hi and welcome!

I like my games to last long. That's why I decided to try and play a game of HoI2 that would begin in 1897 (thanks to the 1914 mod) and would end... well I'm not quite sure. I would continue the game for as long as I could (or for as long as I would enjoy it :p) jumping from 1914 to either vanilla HoI2: DD (or Arma) or Kaiserreich (a truly wonderful mod) depending on the outcome of my first game and then maybe even MDS?
Since I did finish my WW1 campaign (more or less, maybe I will change some things, or play a little longer) I wanted to see if my AAR would draw any attention.
I chose to play the British Empire. The game is set Normal/Furious. I'm not the best player there is, but I try. I hope anyone who decides to read this won't be bored. Cheers.

Middle of the British Empire invasion fleet, 1919

Being on shore the ocean isn't so impressive. Of course the horizon where the sky meets water can charm any heart and there is nothing like the sight of the sun drowning during sunset. Event then when you turn your back you have your home, family or at least stable land there. No such luck here. Cole knew that but still couldn't get used to this sad fact.
When he joined the army he hoped he would be spared the "luxury" of traveling large distances onboard. The fact he was a british empire infantry man complicated things. Hard to avoid going by sea when your country is a bloody island. Even harder when it's spread all over the bloody world. Anywhere in the world - the Great British Empire was there. And wanted to have soldiers there.
Cole couldn't wait till the moment he would set his foot on dry land again. Then again, when he did he was likely to get shot or blown to bits the moment he his foot touched soil. Of course that was only a possibility - chances are his ship will go down before he even sees any kind of shore.
Still he had to admit it. Seeing the great British fleet going to war was impressive. As far as he could see - there were ships everywhere. From rather small, almost unarmed transport vessels like the one he was on, to enormous dreadnoughts with guns that looked like they could destroy mountains with just the roar of firing.

britishgrandfleet.jpg

"You don't see this kind of thing everyday, don't you?"
Cole turned his head and saw an older man, a soldier like himself, looking at the fleet and smoking a pipe. The man had a three-day beard that was getting gray here and there. By the looks of it he could be Coles father... or at least something close to that.
"It is an impressive view indeed." - the boy answered looking at a cruiser moving slowly next to his ship - "I just hope I can see it again."
The older man looked at him surprised - "What? One invasion is not good enough for you?"
"That's not what I had in mind. What I meant was - I hope I'll get to ride this fleet back home after the war."
The man burst into laughter which then turned into coughing and into laughter again.
"Good point, son. Bloody good point... I hope you don't mind I'll tag along with you for the ride then?"
"Not at all sir."
"Don't 'sir' me boy. I'm no fancy officer. Gable Thorn is my name, but call me Gabe if you please. All my firends do."
"Cole Heart" - he shook the man's hand. - "How long do you think will the fight last?"
Gabe smiled at Cole. It was a rather sad smile.
"Hell if I know. The last wars didn't last that long did they? The first invasion, then the war... good thing they end so quickly! Made survivng a lot easier" - he laughted.
"You fought in the war?"
"The war? Ha! ? The first battefield I saw was still in the XIXth century!"
Coles eyes widened.
"You can't be serious. That was over 20 years ago!"
"Yes it was. I joined a year before the invasion. During the war with Mahdiya. I could tell you about it if you're willing to hear."
Gabe lit a match and lit his pipe. Cole took his own pack of cigarettes and lit one.
"Sure, why not. Not that I have anything better to do now."

London, 6 May 1898

"As you can see gentelmen, the mighty Russia is not so mighty as one might think." - said the man at the end of the table. He laughted under his nose. "Two months and little japan beats them and takes control over Korea."

japkorea.jpg

"It is impressive indeed your Highness, but I don't think we should underestimate Japan." - a balding man with his chest decorated by medals answered. There was tension in his voice.
"Nonsense, sir Wolseley. Japan is of no importance for our plans. Even if they grow a little stronger they still are too cautious with what they do. I am sure they won't even try to hold Korea in their hands. Probably they will let the koreans govern themselves - a mistake that will cost them dearly."
"But the war is far from being over. What if they get further into russia and obtain control-"
"Over territories so large that they will have problems controling them? Belive me - this war is nothing more than an amusing show of how russia is overrated. I would rather hear how are things going in africa. Any problems since last year?"
"No your Highness. The total victory over Mahdiya achieved in March last year has proven to be a great example how other rebellions may end."
"Not may, but will, sir Wolseley."
"Of course your Highness."
"Sir Lansdown?"
"Yes, your Highness?" - a man with a large mustache asked.
"How are our relations with the Ottomans? Any change?"
"No, your Highness. They are still afraid of our Empires might. I must say I was quite surprised when they handed us Kuwait with no fight."

kuweittaken.jpg

"Yes, I thought that we would be able to put our plan into motion if they refused. A pity, but what can we do?" - the man at the end of the table smiled.
The sound of knocking on the door filled the room. A moment later another man in a military uniform entered the room. After a deep bow he said:
"Your Highness - I am happy to report that our operation in africa has begun. By the end of this month my men will finish the operation."
"Wonderfull! You have done well sir Ardagh. The next step however is mine to take. If all goes well gentelmen, by the end of this month we will be a step closer to creating our dream Empire!"

London, 30 May 1898

"We cannot allow this to go by with no consequence!" - George Windsor shouted. - "They have gone too far! Shooting at Brish soldiers. That is truly a declaration of war!"
"Stop screaming George, I can hear you quite well." - said queen Victoria. Even thou she was over 60 years old she had some kind of aura of power around her that made other people respect her not only because she was the queen. - "We must not be hasty."
George fell silent. He looked around the room. His father Edward, the heir to the throne, was standing next to all of the important people in Britain.

victoriagov.jpg

"My queen, if I may" - the minister of security, sir John Ardagh waited till the queen noded. - "Our spies in France inform us that the french army is currently guarding the border with Prussia. Their side of the channel is completly unguarded. As Viscount Wolseley noted" - Ardagh looked towards the chief of army. - "they suspect us to fight them in our african colonies in niger. A landing in northern france would give us the advantage of surprise."
"Our navy is more than ready for a campaign like this. All we need is your order, your Highness" - sir Frederic Richards, the chief of navy added.
"You are all well aware what you are talking about? We are talking about a new war in europe. You want me to order an invasion on one of the most powerful countries on the continent. Ha! They are even allied with russia!"
Everyone in the room fell silent. After a while sir Lansdowne broke the silence.
"Russia might not get involved in this war - they are still fighting the japanese. Plus, the french public opinion is on our side. They are not very happy with their goverment starting a new colonial war." - said Chamberlain.
"So you are also in favor of this invasion idea foreign minister?"
"Yes, your Highness."
The queen sighted. She looked at every man in this room. She could see they were unanimous. After a while she turned her head towards her son - Edward.
"What say you Edward? If you were in my place, if you were king - what would you decide?" - she asked.
Edward thought for a moment and then he answered.
"It is not my duty to make decisions such as these mother, even if it will be one day. You ask me what would I do. I would think over the situation and choose the best option for my kingdom, for my people. That option right now seems to be war on the continent. The first reason would be to show the other powers we are not to be trifled with. You should remember how the Tsar wanted to create a continental league to isolate us from europe" - anger could be heard in Edwards voice. - "If he succeeded the whole Empire would suffer from that. Secondly - this is our chance to get a foothold in europe. Im not talking about conquering France - that would be too much bloodshed and would take too much time. But just think - if we could control normandy, if we had our little piece of European mainland in out power..." - he fell silent letting the image burn into all of his listeners heads. - "I say - it is the right time to remind the world why is Britain the greatest empire in the world."
Now everyone looked at the queen. Even if she did feel the pressure of her decision she did not let it show.
"Very well. Sir Wolseley I hereby order you to invade northern france. The British Royal Navy are to support you in any way they can. You have my full approval of using the British colonial army stationed in India. You will need it, seeing how our home army is rather small and trained in defending england, not in attacking."
"Yes, your majesty! I will command the attack personally." - Wolseley answered. After a bow he left the room to make preparations. Soon, the chief of navy followed. The meeting was over. The war was about to start.

The same day, in France, the french army was gethering in the south, near Marseille to be transported to africa.

Three weeks later, young private Gable Thorn was about to board a ship that would lead him to the coast of france where his first meeting with war, death and despair awaited him.

Interesting, i'm currently playing a WWI scenario starting from 1897 as Germany and let me say that the Western and Eastern Front's of OTL WWI are the opposite from MTL's WWI; the Eastern Front is static whilst the Western Front is semi-fluid. As well, the Ottoman Empire didn't join the CP while Sweden did and the Balkan's didn't go throw the wars.

Oh very interesting.
I wonder how long it will last. Good luck !

Avranches - France, 7 July 1898

Almost two weeks have passed since the British army landed in Brest. For Gable it were two weeks of constant marching. Not like he was complaining. Well, maybe a little. It could have been worse. Since the 25th of June, when he got off his ship, the army hadn't taken part in any battles.

Not only that - some frenchmen were more than happy to see them. It was hard to belive, but true. Gabe saw firsthand how some peasant was treating british soldiers with bread and soup. He heard that the people of France were upset with their goverment and there were uprising in various parts of the country. It only made the invasion easier.
Gable looked around. He was lucky. Most of the men in his division were english. That wasn't too common. Most of the invasion force was made out of british

forces stationed in India. More than a half of the army spoke a language Gabe couldn't even begin to understand. And what the hell were those dots on their forehead?! Some of them wore turbans. The only good thing about that thing was that it gave you some bandage. Gabe hoped he wouldn't need any.
"Hey Gabe! Did you hear?"
Gable turned his head. A young soldier from his division named Thomas, who he met on the ship that brought them to France, was running towards him.
"Did you hear? We won the first battle!" - he said excited.
"Really? Thats great news!"
"Sure is. Remember those guns we heard yesterday? At some place named Avran-ches, god only knows how you spell that, " - he laughed. - "our men met the French. Both sides were surprised by the other but general Wood acted quickly. He sent request south and while he kept the enemy busy the Punjab division took them from the flank."
"Nicely done. I just hope that when we get into battle things will go so smoothly..."
"You worry too much." - said Thomas. - "I'm going to tell others about it." - saying so he ran forward, leaving Gable behind.

outside Caen - France, 13 July 1898

Gable was falling behind. Even thou he tried he couldn't run faster. Few seconds later he realised why - it's hard to run while you are not breathing. Not that he could help it. He was to terrified to breath. A few steps later he tripped over something. His face landed in mud. Still lying on the ground he looked around.

britishsoldiersundershe.jpg

To his left and right he could see his fellow soldiers advancing towards the French positions. Some of them had their mouths open. Gabe supposed they were shouting and screeming. He couldn't confirm that. Since the beggining of the battle all he heard was ringing in his ears. He had the artillery to thank for that. After a few breaths he looked forward towards his goal.

screensave13.png

The french were defending a small settlement and had their artillery positioned on a hill not far behind it. Shooting from windows and behind quickly made cover the french soldiers were mercilessly taking down tens of british soldiers who could only dream of finding any cover. Dead bodies in british uniforms were lying everywhere.
A moment later Gabe relised he was lying for too long and it was time to change positions. The thing that made him notice that were lots of dirt falling on him and some the trembling of the ground. Apparently the enemy artillery was bombarding him. Not that he heard that but he saw some shells falling a bit too close to him for his taste. He found his rifle, grabbed it and started running towards the buildings wishing that enemy soldiers would find other british men more attractive for their bullets.

Nantes - France, 15 July 1898

Wolseley looked at the reports and made some changes on the map in front of him.

screensave14.png

According to the newest reports the invasion was going really well. Just yesterday they took Caen. The battle was rather tough but after the british cavalry attacked the enemy artillery from the side everything ended quite quickly. Most of the french ran north towards Cherbourg where they were cut off. The Royal Navy was ordered to patrol the coast in case any ships appeared to evacuate them.
Secondly, the battle for Cholet was also going rather smoothly. Thanks to the engineering division crossing Loire proved no problem.
Capturing Le Mans was also an important achievment. It relieved general Woods forces to the north by attracting the enemies attention and brought them closer to Paris.
Paris itself was supposed to be under some revolt. French right-wing radicals took control over the city, trying to prove that the goverment is not able to control the situation in the country. Same incidents were happening across france. Corsica was in total chaos with the rebels taking control over the entire island and even a few ships.
"Fools..."
The only thing they did accompilsh is weaken the country they were trying to protect. At that moment a messenger came into the tent and saluted.
"Sir! I bring word from the duke of Connaught."
"Report."
"Yes Sir! The duke reports that after the Bombay Army crossed Loire the battle was quickly won. We now control Cholet. He is prepering a defence perimiter and awaiting your orders." - the man reported.
Wolseley smiled and marked Cholet as taken. South was almost secured. Now it was time to push the French in the north.

Paris - France, 8 August 1898

Before joining the army the only city Gabe saw was Cardiff. He never really traveled much. That was one of the reasons he joined. Still he never imagined he would be eating some french bread sitting somewhere in Paris.
Just a few days before the British army entered the city. They met almost no resistance. No wonder. The city was completely in chaos. It was hard to tell who was in control of Paris then - the local police, right wing radicals unhappy with how the war was going, the liberals who had the same reasons as the conservatives - they just couldn't stand each other enough to protest togather.

screensave22.png

The british quickly imprisoned everyone who was causing trouble. Now, with Paris captured the war wouldn't last much longer. Even if taking the French capital wasn't enough the biggest part of the French army has been cut off in the north. In a few days they would either surreneder or die. Funny thing - the ones who cut off the army were French revolters...
Gabe felt lucky - his division was ordered to stay and secure Paris. He wasn't leaving the till the war ended. His first war and he managed to survive with only some scraches. The only thing that bothered him was that strange feeling this wasn't his last war...

London - England, 11 September 1898

People in the streets cheered. Everywhere people shouting, dancing and waving British flags. Earl Roberts moved away from the window and concentrated on the conversation in the room.
"...here we can see the new border between our colonies in Africa" Lansdowne was showing the newly drawn map to the other men.

screensave25.png

"I am still amazed the french were willing to give up so much." said Ardagh.
"They did not have a choice. Their army was completely broken. Not to mention the revolts across the country." Wolseley replied "If they didn't accept our terms we would conquer all of France. I must add I still don't quite understand why we did not."
The man by the table, slowly sipping wine turned towards them.
"Sir Wolseley we must not be impatient." he put the glass down and came to the table with the map - "If we had moved deeper into France the Tsar might have taken action against us. Ha! It is quite possible that Germany would cross the border and we would clash with them. We are not ready for that. Not yet at least."
The men in the room fell silent.
"Of course you are right your majesty." Wolseley replied. "We must strengthen our position on the other side of the channel first. Ships are carrying materials for fortifications on the new border with the French. Part of the invasion force has been left on the mainland to ensure no revolts are taking place. At the moment none major incidents occured."

screensave24.png

screensave27.png

"That is good news. Let us hope it stays that way."

A nice peace indeed, but I think that on the long run Wolseley is right, there is now a possibility for London to unite the UK & France as it could had been the case during the HYW. Now France is weak and an easy target for powers like Germany, Italy or even Spain.

Also, the feelings of revanchism the French feel towards Germany are going to pale in comparison when put next to what they must feel towards you!

Argentan - British France, 30 November 1899

Gabe sipped his coffe sitting at a cafe in Argentan. Since the end of the invasion and the peace signed at Tours he was assigned to one of the few divisions that were supposed to oversee the safety of the construction. The border that stretched from Nantes to Belgium was being reinforced with bunkers and border outposts. Usually Gabe was spending days guarding the construction sites or nearby villages to ensure safety. Once or twice his division was patroling the border.
Not today. He spent most of his free days the same way - morning coffe and croissants while reading the newspaper and a fun night at some pub. Funny how quickly people were adopting to the new situation. English newspapers were easy to buy, at most restaurants you could get an english menu and bartenders were almost fluent at english by now. British pounds were getting almost as popular as french francs. That didn't mean the situation in british held France was calm.
Even thou there weren't any major uprisings french nationalists were being busy. Gabe's division didn't guard construction sites for fun. Every now and then they catched someone trying to sabotage the site or trying to cross the boreder to France. Signes like "Vive la France!" could be seen on almost every wall.
France wasn't the only place where British soldiers were busy. Pn the 10 of October some minor nations in south africa declared war on the empire. Gabe thought that their leaders had courage. Didn't mean they were smart. Four weeks later one of the countries was defeated the second - in big trouble.

screensave42.png

The other page was about the far east. It seems that Japan was doing amazingly well against Russia.

screensave44z.png

The article discredited the Russian army for losing against a small island country. Gabe found it ironic england was exactly like japan, just on the other side of the globe...

London - England, 8 January 1900

"Your majesty, there is a messenger from Sir Ardagh." said the butler.
"Let him in."
"As you wish." the butler opened the door, let a young man in a military uniform in and left the room. The messenger saluted.
"Your majesty, I have two reports from Sir Ardgh! The first one concerns the Japanse-Russian war. It seems thah both sides have signed a treaty yesterday at Portsmouth in the United States."

800pxtreatyofportsmouth.jpg

"According to the treaty Japan has taken control over Port Arthur and Korea."
The other man in the room stroked his beard as he turned towards the window.
"Interesting." he said to himself. "I asumed this would happen, but not so quickly... What is the second message?"
"Yes sir! The second message is about our progress against the revolters in south africa. After reinforcing our forces with additional divisions the army of Transvaal has been defeated. Our army is moving towards their capital. In a few days the war should be over. That is all your majesty."
"Dismissed" he said, but didn't even bother with turning. He could hear the man leaving the room. The man moved toward his desk and took some papers from it. The first piece he took was about the coastal fortifications that were being build all across england. It wasn't easy getting premission to build them, but the recent war with france helped. The second document was about the fortifications in France. There were no delays there too even thou there were reports of sabotages. The man smiled. In a few years nothing would be able to drive them out of mainland europe. Then they could go on with their other plans of making the empire the most powerful power on Earth.
