Something people may or may not have noticed which you can use to make your sages hugely effective even right at game start is that +damage items add to spell damage. And the Crown of Dana is an armor piece which sages can wear and gives +200 damage. No big deal, fireballs or whatever already do a ton of damage, right? Except that the damage adds to damage-per-second spells... per second. So the level 1 venomous curse your dude starts with no longer does 1-30 damage per second for 25 seconds, it does 201-230 damage per second. Which will wipe out any unit you are likely to face for quite some time. And if you upgrade it to level 20 the duration goes to 35 seconds, and so on.

Maybe everybody already knew this except for me. Doesn't seem right to me that your level 1 starting skill can annihilate any enemy who isn't immune to poison but what do I know.

I didn't know this and this should definitely be in the bug report session.
