I remember in the pre-release discussion that someone in the CORE team mentioned that there was a problem with a CTD with save games after a certain date. Well I have a save from mid-1942 that will not load. I had a similar problem with a US game I played last week. I have since deleted those save games though.

Any ideas?

There's a known issue with saves after mid-1943. We're trying to track down where the issue arises from.

Out of experience i use autosave every month and another savename frequently aswell. It happened before that loading the savegame didn't work but the autosave file did work. Also, although i don't know if it helps, i regulary restart the game and sofar no problems.

I just found out that my Germany Aug 1, 1943 game won't load. CTD with "Send report to Microsoft" message.

I noticed that it crashes fairly early in the load process so I thought I'd compare the early part of the save file with one from late '42 that works. Unfortunately I haven't seen anything that's different but unfortunately save files are VERY large.

I did try changing the dates in the file to 1942 with same CTD results.

I havent been able to test any of this, but might it have to do with one of the wars going on?

Could be. I've only tried deleting the "Italy only" war so far and that didn't work. When I get more time I'm going to look into that further. I reported in the vanilla version that the wars were messed up sometimes (you couldn't SR through allies territory sometimes because of this) so it may very well have something to do with this issue too IMO.

Same with me in my July '43 game and autosave.

CORE isuue?

Is this really a CORE issue? As has been posted previously somewhere there can be problems with saving the game in vanilla as well when you hit the wrong button at the wrong time resulting in currupted savefiles.

Since my computer isn't state of the art by any means and those savefiles are fairly huge (and are getting BIGGER towards the end of the game) my autosaves take something like a week or two later in the game (if the gameclock weren't halted). I had the savegame CTD both in vanilla and in CORE - actually only once in CORE but I haven't played CORE much yet.

So might it be that this CTD just happens more often because CORE savefiles are even larger than vanilla ones (are they actually? at least I suppose so with all the individual ships around)???

I believe this bug to be CORE related because I've never had this problem with a Vanilla save after many many games, some lasting into the 1950's and '60's using the No Time Limit patch.

Also the commonality of the mid '43 variable seems to indicate that CORE changed something within the save files. Perhaps a tech or event change. Unfortunately it's been very elusive. It is however a definite game breaker if you can't play past a certain date and therefore a priority.

There are just too many CORE players experiencing basically the same problem to think it's not CORE related IMO.

Fortunately many of us are diligently seeking a fix.

Thanks for the answer. So it's just my stoneage computer (can't afford to research 2006 electronics :) )

Just had thought I would mention it as I had seen a thread about it a looong time ago (was shortly after hoi2 was released I think).

So I'll be looking out for the savebug, too from now on.

After a post on the 21vikings forum, I believe the CTD issue to be moddir related, based on posted tech info. It looks as if save games using moddir are generating an invalid checksum in the saves, which is causing instability and CTD in the exe. The issue is also probably compounded by the numbers of files we have changed from vanilla. We'll be discussing this as a priority.

That seems to make sense. I've been pouring over the bad save file I have and I've been unable (with my self taught knowledge of how this stuff works) to find anything that is a problem within the save itself. I've tried visually comparing known good to known bad files and editing certain parts of the save file with no success so far.

Since the bad saves seem to start in '43, it appears something changes in the data that is saved that causes the problem. The only thing I can think of that is consistent in all games that changes in '43 are the leaders/ministers/tech teams. It looks like one or more activates that is either improperly made or pushes the total over some unpublished max limit.

Now, I am not a programer, this is just my logical look at the problem.
