um sorry to bother ppl (not sure where to put this, so feel free to move this to an appropriate forum)

I used to be able to play EU2 + HoI on my comp no problem (CK and Vicky are fine)

currently if I load up EU2 the left side of the screen expands and contracts and repeats this. HoI does this too, but to a lesser degree. If I try to load Civ3 the entire screen shakes. :(

I've messed around with pretty much all of the Display options in the control panel and tried most of the monitor's menu of commands but nothing seems to work. I really want to be able to play EU2 + HoI again. My system is just over a year old, haven't been taxing it too much. Bought fans to aim at monitor and to cool down room in general at the start of summer.

Any suggestions or ideas as to what's wrong and how to fix it would be greatly appreciated. :)

Here are my system stats:

AMD Athlon XP 2200+
1.80 GHz
512 MB RAM

WinXP home edition

Plug and Play Monitor (TTX 17 inch) on NVidia GeForce FX 5200

resolution 1280 by 1024 pixels

Color quality 32bit (highest)

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.

Thanks for the help Castellon

1.) seems have helped some in both HoI and EU2's case but I still can't play them cause the wiggling will damage my eyesight

2.) doesn't have a discernible effect

3.) doesn't have a discernible effect

meanwhile, I have updated my NVDia drivers from 52.16 to 56.72

It sounds like your monitor has problems with the current signal bandwidth setting used by EU2 and HoI through DirectX.

Try a different game resolution (unless the 1280x1024 is not your desktop but your game resolution in all the games), and see if that clears it up.

You can also start DxDiag, goto the rightmost tab (more help) and alter the refresh rate setting. Be sure to select a setting that is actually supported by your monitor for the resoltion the game runs in. Normally, 60, 72 or 75 should be ok.

If it doesn't clear up your problems, then I fear for your monitor. Try lending a different one and see if the problem goes away. If it does, then your current monitor is malfunctioning and should be repaired/replaced.

thanks Jpd - I'll try that :)

I had the same problem. I chose your last solution and bought a new monitor. :D
Now it's working properly.

you're all going to laugh (I found the problem)

It wasn't DirectX.

It wasn't my NVDia card.

It wasn't the monitor.

It wasn't the refresh rate or the resolution...

It was the fan that I had right beside the monitor, pointed at it and whirring away full blast...

Damn I feel silly (but strangely relieved that I don't need to replace the monitor anytime soon) that I didn't notice this straightaway

Glad you found the cause. Luckily, it isn't always electronics that's malfunctioning :p

I have seen that before, it is kind of shocking to see the effect and wonder if it can do that to the screen what is it doing to your insides. :(
