Thanks General Gusian. I use a utility thay places the game in a window, but Paradox do have the obligation to present the their customers with an aproved solution to the screen resolution problem!!
The game works in the resolution specified.
Paradox does not have any obligation as you put it to provide support for every resolution you would like. It is that attitude which prevented them from putting support for more resolutions in the last patch.
And what makes you think the games uses 16Bit colors?
That's because Windows seems to have the least problems when activating DirectX in the resolution and color depths used in the game.
Other than that, the resolution and color depth of your desktop is irrelevant for the game, or indeed any DirectX game.
And regarding your original question. I assume you post identical questions to other game developers that do not cater your preferred setting (such as Microsoft, Blizzard, etc.)
Well I dont ask for a solution for every possible resolution!
As most people should now, flat screen are becomming very common and they have a specific optimum resolution.
What I would like to see is an official Paradox utility as the Psswitch on the HoIwiki site, that enables me to run the game in a window att intended resolution. Hardly a big effort!
It should be in the commersial interest of Paradox to give that support to flatsceen customers!
1) Different monitors have different native resolutions.
2) A lot are now even widescreen which have different proportions to more tradition resolutions.
3) Lots of people also requested a lower resolution, In fact more requested this than the resolution you are looking for.
4) The vast majority say the game plays fine on their flat screens, it apears to depend on the quality of the screen they own and the combination of what video card and driver they use.
5) It can be a big deal, but when Paradox offered a solution of a black border, people rejected that option so they got nothing.
EDIT: As for future support, the new engine is reported to be a fully 3D engine so this issue should not arise.
Simply because the maps and units are rendered 3D instead of being fixed size 2D bitmaps does not mean that any weird resolution you can think of can be supported. It all comes down to which resolutions DirectX (aka Microsoft) wants to support there.
See Sid Meyer's Civilisation III for examples on this. Fully 3D engine, but still limited to the limited amount of resolution combinations DirectX supports.
My guess is that you have to wait for Avalon (in Longhorn) before a fast wider range of resolutions becomes fully supported in DirectX.
Well I my specific case, Rome Total war for ex indentifies all screen resolutions my screen accepts and does a very god job at ideal resolution both in strategy and tactical mode. Basicily what earlier Paradox games did extending the map area.
