This is more an editing issue than a modding issue per se, but it fits best here. I was tampering with my save (playing WATK 3.11), editing some provinces to their historical owners, enlarging some colonial cities, and changing culture/religion to better setups in preparation for eventual conversion to Victoria (game date is 1724). However, I seem to have done something terribly wrong, because now the save crashes on loading, no error message. I spent several hours combing over my changes to the save, but could not locate any of the usual sorts of errors that arise when modding/editing (brackets, etc).

What sorts of errors cause CTDs without an error message, as opposed to errors that do trigger a message?

every kind of error could cause CTD without error message, even something in your pc could do it, like my last game: i had just to reboot my pc :D

BTW:
-look again brackets
-have you changed TP in cities? maybe you forgot to add some important values
-have you erased/added troops or navies? this could create doubled ids or "battle"/"move" problems
-have you changed ownedprovinces values in the right way?

Better restart with original savefile (of course, you have a copy, haven't you?) and make changes step by step. After each change, reload the game. If everything is alright move to next step. If not, you know exactly where the error is located in the savefile and if you don't find the error, then post here the change you made. Someone will certainly help you.

I finally figured it out.... When i had transferred a Spanish-owned prov in Ireland to Britain, I had put different prov numbers in the owned and controlled column. So they owned the province, but controlled a french tradepost instead of said province in that column....
