I think no navy is too harsh, even there are only few notable naval battles, the navies are quite important, for example, Ishiyama Hongan-ji hold out for ten years under Nobunaga's siege because their allies, the Mori clan, used their naval advantage to keep a supply line to Ishiyama, until Kuki Yoshitaka, Nobunaga's naval commander, defeated them

I dunno, naval combat tends to be bad in most paradox games. If this is supposed to be CK in Japan, I can see them removing the naval aspect of the game.

it looks grand and i like there no being navies, the games about clan politics all that honour nonsense not boats.
its not about whats important to the time period, but whats important to the game. to some people the art would be the most important aspect of the period, but its not at all important to the game which is why there isnt a painting mini-game to endure. Navies can be abstracted, hundreds of really really important things are abstracted, navies arent so important and are very easily abstracted.
is three the highest flags get?

Looks good. I'm totally gonna buy and play this game when it comes out, but no navies? Really?

While naval combat was not a major feature of the Sengoku period, it was present. And I think it should be present in some part. What about contact with outside countries? What about trading with the Portugese? First contact with European traders (Nanban) was an important aspect to the Sengoku period.

What do those have to do with naval combat?

None of this need ships to work.

The detail with the coastline looks incredible. I love the amount of provinces also, should provide some interesting strategic depth.

You said there would be island provinces, but no boats, so how does that work?

This has already been answered on the first page multiple times, e.g.:

Naval transports and such have been abstracted away as straits. Most straits haven't been scripted into the game yet, thus you cannot see them in the screen shots, but when scripted, they show up as dotted lines on the map.

The map looks quite pretty ^^

And seeing as the vanilla version of Sengoku will only focus on the Japanese mainland naval combat isn't exactly essential, although simply having a Eu3 version of naval combat in would of course have been nice.

My guess is that Paradox are leaving naval combat out of the vanilla version and are saving it for a future Korean/Asian mainland expansion, which would increase the size of the map and add those other civilizations to the game. Kind of like they did with battle-scenarios and peace deals/war goals in HoI3 where they originally said they wouldn't be included in the game for all kinds of strange reasons, and are now adding them in the next expansion.

Giving us all the goodies at the same time doesn't make much sense in terms of marketing.

Anyway, game is looking good so far! :)

As we're working tightly with the CKII team with the map technology, we'll probably have the same low-end mode as they're planning, with a much simpler map for old (or simply bad) computers.

Whoever on the team (it could've been everyone I guess) pushed for implementation of the bolded part is a hero. Thank you. So much. Though I may have to actually pull out the quad core to see this map in action. It seems really good.

That definitely looks good. To be honest naval combat is one of the weakest aspects of most Paradox games, so it won't be missed too much. If the diplomacy, intrigue and land combat are good enough, then it wouldn't really add anything.

I do agree with the suggestion of shadowy shapes where Korea, Hokkaido etc should be, rather than empty ocean. I think you've got it cropped so they're not quite in the gameplay area, but having them on the edge makes it feel more real as there's an acknowledgement of the rest of the world, even if you can't get to it.

A little disappointed to hear naval matters will be abstracted but hopefully that will be included in an expansion.

Apart from that, the game looks really good. :D

And is Okinawa in the game?
As can be seen on the mini-map, none of the Ryukyu/Liuqiu/Luchu/Loochoo/Lewchew islands are included, not even the northern ones, for which I love Paradox dearly. As far as non-European overseas trade partners go, having at least Japan's neighbors of China, Korea, Luchu & Ainu would be great, and also including the Southeast-Asian ones even better, but I also wouldn't throw a tantrum if they only had China and Korea.

And as far as the naval aspect goes ... I can see why they exclude it, but I'm not happy about it. Then again, including it would potentially open a whole other can of worms, so I guess I'm actually tentatively in favor of their decision. We'll see how it plays out.

Not that Im putting down the game, but that graphics are not that great. I dont know if people havent played any other games, but for me it looks slightly behind.
It may only be the alpha shots, and it does appear things are missing, but I wish the castles and towns looked better, and not so blotchy if thats the word.
The overall terrain is nice looking, but not the best, it reminds me of an older game and not something amazingly innovative.
But like I said, Im not putting down the game, Ive just played alot of overtop map-like games that are out now that have way better graphical detail than whats being portrayed here.

Ive also sent these screenshots to many friends and bluntly they said the game looks terrible. And that its a copy of Shogun...haha.
