Sengoku was released by CyberFront in Japan this week (Japanese language, naturally). I've bought a few copies for our reenactment club's 'command center' where we all hang out, watch chanbara movies, have guest speakers, talk history, and play samurai-themed PC games. Watching some of our eighty year olds get all worked up over onscreen battles is hilarious, but surprisingly they tend to trash the younger guys...guess they just have more free time to practice and want to get away from their wives!

Here's a link to the game on AmazonJp for anyone who's interested.

I'd love to be in that room... and know Japanese.

Awesome! Do you guys also play Shogun 2 Total War?

What do the reviews over amazon.jp say? I see 3 out of 5. Are they harsh? This is a game about Japanese history so the opinion of Japanese players matters the most!

Not really too negative-pretty much like a cross section of the board here. Lots of comparisons to the 'Nobunaga No Yabou' (Nobunaga's Ambition) series, which tells me these are largely console gamers and not PC gamers. There are issues with the game being too difficult (especially when playing as a kokujin), hard to get into (esp. the interface), and lacking a complex diplomacy element (they don't consider the plotting to be diplomacy). The dearth of ronin and ninja was mentioned. One guy said it was too much like Crusader Kings, but that it might be good because some of the CKII features might be adapted to Sengoku at some point.

They do like the historical accuracy portion of the game and the plotting. Most of the reviews really liked the game (Japanese tend to rate items lower on Amazon than Westerners do) and thought that it provides a solid base to build on.

The most played game is Takeda 3 followed by Takeda 2. Even though it's a couple of years old, It's the most accurate Sengoku-era game out there that has tactical battles, and also a great strategic side to things with a heavy emphasis on supply and command. It's also easy to insert custom banners for your troops, and even officer portraits. Plus my father-in-law (who heads up the club) and myself are characters that appear in the game, so everyone gets a kick out of that. I'm a gaijin firearms-ashigaru general in Nagao Kagetora's (the future Uesugi Kenshin) army.

Shogun 2 gets played a bit, but it's really too much for our computers to run, and gets hooted at a lot because of all the ridiculous ahistorical and anachronistic unit types. Fall of the Samurai will REALLY get laughed at.

I think Sengoku will prove to be very popular because it starts in the Onin war, gives a ton of options, is historically accurate, and because it IS difficult. Our guys like a challenge. We've got four terminals so we can have a nice little LAN game going on to make things easier in the early game, until someone gets too close to winning.

Tashunoshi... I am so envious of this last part... ganbatte!! :ninja:

Indeed, I find consistency in all the above comments. I play Japan in Pride of Nations, Ando (Akita) clan in Sengoku, and all the Japan-related titles from CA since the original Shogun. Indeed, there is no comparison if you want historical accuracy with the titles from Paradox. I play all of them happily though: CA's titles for the action and fast pace, and Paradox for the difficulty and historical accuracy. There is something for everyone.

Moreover, I do believe that today's games have much more to offer when they are easily moddable. The amazing mod for Sengoku and some realism mods for Shogun give all these games much more appeal.

Interesting. Tatsunoshi, if you see any reviews of the game it would be interesting to hear what they think of it.

Thank you for the inside Tatsu. Sounds like you guys are really having some great time over there - must be fun.
Yeah, Total War has always been arcade all the way. That's why I like seeing and participating in "realism" mods as far as available modifications can be called realistic in that game line. Watched Takeda 3 screenies and a review and it looks a promising game. Are there any news about hypothetical Takeda 4?

Unfortunately no. Magitech is not in the financial position to work on it for the moment. They work on i-phone/i-pad games for the moment (i think they want to make a version of the original Takeda for the i-pad at some point). Maybe later as they really would like to do them. Maybe if Paradox were willing to work with them?

However, Takeda 3 is still very solid, you should try the demo.

Unfortunately not. There are plans for an I-Phone version of Takeda, but it'll be an arcade style game.

Which brings up an interesting point-if Koei can bring out an excellent IPhone version of Nobunaga's Ambition, it'd be great to see an IPhone version of Sengoku. Sure, it would be scaled down, but still fun.

Sure sounds like you have a nice club. Glad to hear that Sengoku has had a good reception in there.

By the way, is there any means to play in japanese with my uk version of the game ?
I think not. I believe there's a different company that translates and publishes the localised Japanese versions of Paradox games, so they are seperate from the western version.
