I was all for the NATO counters for HOI but this...
There's a thing called "context".
Well, in the context of a WW2 wargame counters are mandatory. Both for immersion and psychological reasons.
In the context of a sci-fi game of an ipothetical future, well, simply not. In a WW2 game I know what a counter represents. But in a sci-fi game I can't so I like to look at what I'm actually moving/commanding.
I've been playing Stars ! and similia as anyone else but if we've now the chance to actually see our ships, why not ?
I like counters more in a WW2 game for immersion's sake and for the same reason I like actual models in a schi-fi game.

Love the post, but it looks like Leeeeeeeeeeeemont Ellllllllllllwood failed to read the whole post.
I suspect he's playing the straight man, and his humor is just dry. There is practically zero chance he took the original post seriously. I mean, even the first line of the title gives it away, seriously! ;)

(Granted, the younger crowd might not immediately recognize the glyphs like us old Voyager-era folks, but they surely must have seen Neil Tyson's new Cosmos, right? Seriously!)

The thread is a gigantic joke, no one here is being serious.

So if you weren't familiar with NATO counters already, you'd be totally fine with sprites in your world war 2 game? Am I reading this right? The only reason you want counters is because it's what you're used to so it helps for psychological and immersion reasons that are very obviously personal in nature and don't apply to a non-NATO-familiar audience?

WOW

AWFUL

Seriously, NATO counters should be mandatory to all WWII settings and alternatives should not be provided. Those counters are not merely useful for immersion and familiarity, they are the last bastion of democracy's defense against the onslaught of communists. If you like sprites in WWII games you may as well just go enlist in the Warsaw Pact right now!

I'm going to take it one step further. I DEMAND that from now on, all paradox released titles have counters and an OOB. No matter the theme or context of said game.

I have spoken.

So everyone whom plays hearts of Iron knows what all the counter symbols are?
I didn't at first but now they are stuck in my head. It is so easy to learn and doesn't take any time at all. They are so simple that a small child would also be able to learn what all the NATO counters mean.
