Is it worth it in some way to buid several shipyards? The first one gives one more colonist, one or perhaps two can come in handy to build ships in case of emergency, but do they have some other advantage I overlooked? They don't seem to add to the population growth rate (as opposed to factories), nor to the income or research...

If you have a global empire you might want one in each ocean. Of course by that point attrition for time spent at sea might not be as big an issue. I guess it depends on how well the first shipyard or two cranks out ships.

actually, my question was more along the line "does a shipyard give you some advantages other than being able to build more ships?"

I'd have to agree with BiB. On the other hand, I've built a lot of shipyards because of the "Build shipyard" missions. Easy way to pick up a few VPs. But I've built shipyards in some weird places I have absolutely no need of shipyards.

You occasionally get the chance of a mission to "build shipyard in xxx" which, if you have gold going to waste, is an easy few VPs.

Make sure the province you're asked to build it in, does actually belong to you, or that you have a reasonable chance of conquering it. "Build shipyard in Rome" when the Papal States are your staunchest allies, is kind of a non-starter.
