In game you can basically change your character's clothes and hair/beard to whatever you want regardless of culturally boundaries. This was in the game from the beginning to let the player play around with personal choices. Now that the game has evolved a lot and equipment was introduced a long time ago, the boundaries of both have started to cross but not fully. You can equip weapon and the weapon shows up (unless that was a mod) but if you equip certain armors/crowns, they do not show up.

Maybe a game rule could be introduced regarding equipment:

Roleplay - You can only use clothing you own.
Limited - You can only use clothing and hairstyles that belong to your culture.
Free - You can use any clothing/hairstyle whenever.

Some cultures/religions put emphasis on beards while others may prefer for followers to dress in certain garments and in certain colors.

Regardless of these rules I do think that armor you have equipped should be on you whenever you select it (show up when at war/tournament of course).

Honestly, I just want an option to limit stuff to regional and cultural appropriate choices when it comes to clothing, character designs, and coats of arms. No need to make it a game rule but simply make it clear what is and isn't historically appropriate for a character based on region, culture, and religion that way players can make informed choices.

I broadly agree, but I'd actually make the system even more lenient: Just highlight culturally appropriate visuals or add a filter for them.

Like, the game helps you identify culturally appropriate choices for your immersive West Africa experience. But you want a viking beard and a Byzantine crown? Sure, go for it, who's going to stop you - you're literally the king.

The equipment articles would need to be assigned a culture and a religion/no religion requirement and then the game rules tied to those.
