I was playing as Brazil and it's now 1906. Long story short, those who read my other post will know that UK has declared war on me. What I did was reloading the game to an earlier save and built 480,000 divisions, increase my mobile reserve to around 45 divisions, and built fortifications all along the eastern coast of Brazil.

All this was funded easily by my previous conquest of Peru and Chile.

I've been steadily industrialising and researching techs when available, however, after a while I realize I'll never match the other 4 great powers (i'm now #5). :( My badboy is a stunning 83 and cannot afford to fight another war. I have absolutely no navy techs and ships, and it's too late to research them now.

I feel like my campaign is not going anywhere at this point. There is progress, but perhaps Brazil has reached its max potential?

Please let me know what you think. Should I start as another country?

Depends how you look at it. If you feel you have reached youre goals for a particular game, you might want to move up to new sorts of challenges, but it's all up to you how stuborn you want to play a game. ;)

Of course you can keep playing. I assume the thrust of the attack is coming from Guyana with a few landings.

1) I know you don't have a suitable navy, but keeping a fleet-in-being of frigates is pretty useless. Take whatever you have in groups of one or two ships and see if you can catch some unescorted British transports. This can go a long way to keeping the battle. Your ships will probably be lost, but they weren't doing much anyways.

2) Pull back into the jungles and set yourself behind a river or in the Peruvian Andes. With 480K in troops you might hold an effective defensive line and draw up their war exhaustion.

3) Accept whatever hard offer they give you.

4) Release some provinces if you can. Just reducing your badboy slightly coupled with your big army may prevent this badboy war from happening again.

5) Make an alliance with Germany or France or whomever is a worthy challenge to Britain. Even with +100 relations a nation can declare war on you if your badboy is high enough.

6) If you have the money, build some high level fortifications in connected mountain provinces to hold out for a long time if it happens again.

You nation is probably in a bit of disarray, but it happens. Your next challenge? Getting an alliance of nations (Venezuela, France, Germany & Russia ideally) to give the British a hard fight back and having them fight for you. Admittedly this is very hard to do. Nothing worse than four nations accepting a status quo peace treaty one month after war is declared and you're left alone.

Thanks for the replies guys, what I didn't mention was that I reloaded the game to an earlier save before UK declared war on me, and I was able to built 480,000 additional troops and bunch of fortifications on eastern coast.

So my total army is 650,000, which drove my daily income from $400 to about $0.

UK got caught in a great war in Europe now, and I can see him pulling troops out of South America.

How do I release provinces individually? I thought you could only release whole nations. The only nation which I ever annexed entirely is Peru. This means I could only release all of Peru or none, right?

I'm mainly saying that no matter how good I played for the next 30 years, I'll not be able to exceed the other 4 Great Powers, "UK, Germany, USA, Russia".

You are number 5. As far as I know that is way better than Brazil did by 1906 in real history!

Yeah one thing I did right was setting up a democracy and all social reforms in 1869 and lower rich taxes to 10%, which attracts loads of immigrants.

1869:
Population: 9 million
Daily Export: $200
# Factories: 9
Army: 78,000

1904: (with conquest of Bolivia, Peru, Chile)
Population: 51 million
Daily Export: $2,600
# Factories: 26
Army: 650,000

I must have done something right.... :D

It may be getting close in some dimensions, but I think you'd be hard press to rank "Brazil #5 among nations" today in 2009. Eventually, it may well be #1, but they still have a lot of issues with a lack of a clear Federalist unity and way too much crime being major from what I understand.

Thats a good rate of immigrants, especially considering that the real bulk of immmigration really only come after 1900. I think if you continue to 1936 with getting even more immigrants and putting them in industry, you might still move a spot or 2 in the ranking.

I would usually sell the province's that i want as buffer to a sattelite, doesn't even matter if the sattelite is near to it. Makes it easier to get them back too, especially if its an unciv that you use as buffer.
Although i don't use that trick much anymore, as i have grown myself the duty to make sure that whatever my actions are, that they have an aestheticly pleasing result on the map.

You should try to unite the Americas under your rule! And as for the British, you should probably increase your relations with them, and then just buy their provinces that border you. When an AI nation doesn't border you, it is much less inclined to DoW you.
