Hey - so I went onto a multiplayer lobby - just playing with some friends (and a few randoms), and 3 years in - I am notified there are hostile fleets coming for me - but then I checked my science ship - but nothing was attacking it - then I checked the map and saw it was my home system.

This was strange - but I brushed it off "Oh just some amoeba and I got unlucky, station and fleets combined will take them out..."

Then it killed the station, and the fleet.
At once.

I got a bit confused and so I clicked in to the system.

There was 20 shroud entities - identical to the ones from the End of the Cycle in my home system.

3 years in.

How.

Did someone hack in the server - can that even happen - is it a rogue mod, a glitch?

help

well it could be a rogue mod; did you have to download any mods to play with your friends? [assuming you aren't the host]

if so, then yeah a mod might have gone berserk. scrap that save and possibly that mod [you are free to try a new game to see if it happens again]
if not then...

i doubt it is a hack
and i doubt it is a glitch

the only other solution would be that the host made a sp game, used console commands. saved it...then loaded it up for multiplayer

but then you wouldn't be able to use a custom empire...you'd be forced to use one that was already in the game
