Part LXVII (1317-1325)

Year 1317
======================

After somewhat longer break we come back to freezing Siberia. Between parts I did another land census (as it was around 100 years since last one) so I will present it later. Also did realize that due to regency we were unable to wear all our artifacts so we got a little more of stats (thanks to equipping armor, weapon and also Silk Robe for diplomacy). After recent civil war we really want to chill out for a bit. Ideally spent 5 years on prosperity ambition. To get that I would need to cancel Emperor's Arnaz "Make a Friend" ambition. Before doing that let's try one more thing. We can invite hermetic member we were swaying in recent years (but failed to befriend so far) to stargazing as a last effort. After that no matter what happens we hop onto prosperity ambition. We also arrange marriage between Emperor's sister - Princess Litava and heir to City of Lysva in Perm county (fixing another lowborn). This way both of Arnaz sister will be located in capital county. On top of usual court education maintenance we have to invite more skilled Jewish stewards from abroad (as we only have our chancellor left). We get 2 (31 and 36 years old) but we also nab a 18 Stewardship Bodpa (that will accept demand for conversion).

As month passes to February we have quite a few things going. We are still in the middle of construction of laboratory from the end of last part and are trying to fix Qazan Minor Viceroy with assassination. We lose some ingredients due to one event chain step and decide to start "Writing a theorem paper" for that extra +2 Learning. Soon another assassination fires and fails to deliver again. On 22nd of February rather chunky Uyghur nomad band arrives in Ob county. There is 3083 of them right now but their max is 6860! So I raise my levies from Osha and Tura counties nearby in case they rapidly replenish and our 3.000 silkroad retinues are not enough. My worries soon prove correct as nomads get back over 300 men each month.
juu1x0t.jpeg

Had few spare Viceroy candidates so I was happy to offload them from my court to make is smaller

With March our Stargazing is well underway (we get bad weather but miss on that 5% chance for Depressed). Halfway through the month Qazan Minor Viceroy is perfectly removed thus we can fix administration somewhat more. With that we can move onto 2 unskilled Mayors to be fixed next. Stargazing continues and... works! We get a friend and fullfil our ambition (meaning +1 Diplomacy and +2 Diplomacy/+5 General opinion for 5 years due to "Popular" modifier). Wondering if we could keep stacking that ambition (if we somehow got rid of our friend). He is 6 years older and it isn't a priority but maybe some time later? For now we pick this "See the Realm Prosper" ambition. So all according to plan. The timeline works exactly in the way that should allow us to partake in Crusade. Not sure I want to - next Crusade might be extra difficult. Meaning if we commit then costs most likely will outweight the benefits.
BTPfs56.jpeg

Yay. First success with it and nicely timed. We still failed to produce any technology points so far with that.

Meanwhile our troops march to meet Nomads. Thanks to Ob county having already fort level of 6, Nomads have to painfully slow siege it out (-2.9% defender morale per tick). Allowing us all the time in the world to gather troops. My only issue right now is that due to recent vicious infighting among Komis we are down on commanders. Right now we have only 4 out of 8 commanders in office. The average age of them is... 50 years old. Who remains?:
- Chichayka - age 68, Martial 23, Brilliant Strategist, Siege Leader, Defender, Strategist,
- Teodoro Nieddu - Italian age 50, Martial 25, Brilliant Strategist, Aggresive Leader, Light Infantry Leader, Strong, Shrewd, Infirm (!),
- Schochynava - age 49, Martial 21, Brilliant Strategist, Heavy Infantry Leader, Harelip (!),
- Azra-Va - Italian age 42, Martial 22, Brilliant Strategist, Organiser, Cruel, Patient,

So as you can see we have good support commanders for moving around and sieges but not really someone really great for winning field battles right now. We will have to make do with what we have though. So Chichayka in the small holding left wing, Shochnava in center and Teodoro Nieddu on the right is best bet.
yUA11zo.jpeg

Battle goes well yet we still lose another commander. Some bad luck lately.

Our strategy paid off, as enemy stacked their right flank the most but gave it under defensive commander thus Chichayka while losing was really delaying them tremendously, giving time for other fronts, who were progressing in our favor much more rapidly. Both center and enemy left routed before melee that lasted single day cause enemy get himself terribly countered (probably charge vs at least 1 Pike tacctic) losing 1200 men in single day. Sadly before that, Teodoro Nieddu after routing his opponents got himself killed in pursuit :/... Meaning down to 3/8 commanders we are.

Meanwhile on 28th of June we fixed City of Cukataw and we also got critical success in building laboratory. To be honest I never seen it so it is a first for me. Will have to check later, if it helps anyhow with Invention event chains beside giving us even more +3 Learning. We also get approved on our theorem, meaning we just increasing Learning by +5 to land on 29 personal Learning (from which technology is generated).
wEPYRMS.jpeg

Wow. Critical success is nice on young ruler that will benefit from it potentially a lot.

This year keeps on giving, as soon one of recently invited Ashkenazis gets converted. Don't marry him off yet as I want to have some replacement on my hands. Soon we get note from Hermetic Society that due to death of recent society Leader they decided to make Emperor Arnaz take his mantle. Meaning we just freely advanced from rank 3 to rank 4 (Magus) ahead of schedule and without having to spent 2.000 esoteric knowledge. Well... Nice!

By the end of September our Jurchen Master Engineer builds fireworks guild in Kudymkar (+10% Levy Size, +25% Garrison Size and +1 Mil. Tech. Points income) and extra hidden +6 prosperity points there (Kudymkar is right now at 1 out of 3 max prosperity levels so it will help). Our retinues also gathered in Udmurts so I could re-assign them once more. Don't think we need force in Burtasy anymore so I just garrison them in Perm-Tynea-Udmurts to prevent any ambitious raiders from appearing there.

Till the end of year few more things happen - we inherit Yenisey county in Mongolia to give it away to another higher stewardship character there (to culture convert) and then we lose our Italian Court Tutor (at 55 years of age - he also without my knowledge got possessed and probably left Monastic Society as he had Satanist garbs on his final portrait). I have spare Italian woman with good traits and attributes but first we need to buy favor from her and then murder her weak husband. Luckily we get also opportunity to end our rivalry with one of elderly city mayors (age 68) that was preventing us from getting any taxes. Second Askhenazi converts to Orthodoxy due to efforts of our Court Physician.

Year 1318
======================

We have educational problems right now that we are working on. For now no Monastic ward bonuses till we resolve the issue with lacking Court Tutor. Can deal with 12+ years old and some marriages. For that purpose we spend 600 piety on generating Holy Men to get Genius. At least he has 27 Learning and is Lustful too. We marry him to some unremarkable Italian 16 years old girl to just keep populating the court. As I was keeping 20+ Learning characters to have replacements for Viceroys, our Court once again grow to 90 characters though :/...

Our plot goes through in February. We succeed without getting caught red handed thus we have no problems. We cash in our previously acquired favor and have new Court Tutor. She should do for at least 20 years. For now I have to check if game re-assign all kids in court to her care.
2U6avki.jpeg

She has even nicer set of traits than her predecessor - Diligent, Patient but also Ambitious and Gregarious. She will be able to grant either Diligent or Patient through intervention too so we really are getting bunch of options on her.

Luckily for me, game did most of heavy lifting with micromanagment for me. So right now we can proceed smoothly. Spotted also that Duke of Vasyugan (one of the last remaining feudal Dukes) has really short succession line to his title. So we start murdering through to fix it too. With that most of the year should be quite peaceful.

As we assassinate it turns out that upon his death he spread around bunch of claims that the game didn't inform us about. So we will have a longer list of targets to get through. As we are up to date with Mayors we have nothing else to do so we embark on this journey. Sadly our rival Mayor refused our attempt at reconcilation so we still have this old stubborn Mayor not paying us our dues.

By Autumn we get another hermetic mission that we decline and currency minting Business focus (that we just push through with safe option: +100 prestige, -100 gold). Was thinking about getting Greedy and Deceitful but didn't decide on it. Good call on my part as I forgot we already have Greedy. Lately discovered that this Minting event works in synergy with Tower construction event - by getting Greedy you can employ much cheaper "architect" to decrease the costs from 600% annual income to less than annual income (for our pursposes - if you get Quarry modifier for 100 years it might be more). Problem being that Street Architect has only 2/3 chances of success when saving Leaning Tower we want. Also think I interpreted this event wrongly and I still need Business focus 10 years after the tower is built for chance of Tower leaning event firing (it has weight... So it isn't guaranteed and maybe needs this Focus). We will check it out on this ruler anyway. Still it is painful as getting to that Architect lifestyle isn't quick anyway - we are realistically looking at around 10 years anyway. So adding another decade makes this a 20 years endevaour (which is quite a cost) compared to simple Scholarship "Observatory" event chain for same prosperity increasing Lifestyle trait in just 5 years.

In November our rival Mayor finally dies, so we can get to fixing his son (which is a mess with just 3 stewardship). Game presents us opportunity of choosing between 45% chance for Honest or Deceitful. This will be our 5th trait. Prefer more diplomacy over Intrigue but would be fine with missing trait too. Yet we get that Honest, bumping our vassal limit to 38/40.

Before end of year the hospital kitchen in Tynea burns down. We can not repair it and suffer increased revolt risk or pay for all necessary renovations to maybe get Kind. We go with 3rd option paying only for necessary costs due to having Greedy trait. Then we get update from the East that Western Protectorate subjugated biggest Indian Kingdom. So they are up to no good again.
hNQylcE.jpeg

Expansionist China be expanding. It broke beak Tibet down over the last few decades.

Year 1319
======================

Not much court maintenance is to be made. We do mark another potential Italian commander in the making though. Noticed that my latest marriage of Emperor's sister was messed up and we have the groom in the court. He is still heir to the city so we will see how it goes. Might be ok.

By March we fix issue with son of our old and now dead rival. Everything proceeds smoothly and our Jew is placed there. With that our income almost reaches 5.000 gold and remember that we are still eating some terrible opinion penalties from revocations after civil war. We get another China update - this time from Empire itself:
x4sJ954.jpeg

Maybe they won't hold onto India for long. Would work for me as I want to attack one of their Protectorates to create bigger southern Komi realm in the future.

Before end of month we also inherit Kazakh Viceroyalty. Can't say I'm happy with getting it back after just 3 years since I handed it over. We appoint another married couple there at least (making more room in our Imperial court). Business focus fires with... Gardener lifestyle event chain. We decline it (if we did it we would not be able to get Architect trait).

Takes up to July for something out of note to happen - one of our distant Cousins organises invasion for Permo-Siberian empire! Well we will try to get rid of her with assassination (derailing my work on Vasyugan) but this is not sure thing to rely on. We also try to invite her to our own court to make assassination a certain thing
CkDdeqH.jpeg

Well some of my alliances with foreign realms backfire. Annoying!

August is unlucky as on 1st day 2 disease outbreaks happen in Cumania - Camp Fever (-40% income) in Buqtirma and Smallpox (-25% income) in Qarazhyra.

Month later disease spreads (good investment in those hospitals "Am I right?") but our Adventurer cousin accepts invitation to our court. We excommunicate her and then ponder. Assassination risk giving us kinslayer trait. So maybe let's try imprisoning her with help of Marshal (+25% chance). We succeed at 80% chance and throw her into Oubliette. But this doesn't make "Invasion" alarm go away. Can't execute her (cause Kinslayer). In meantime we go to drink from fountain of Youth to de-age our character from 26 to 24 years.

Then it kept getting from bad to worse. Every attempt we got, we were discovered without firing the assassination. We finally got it in December and... of course we got revealed. So now we got that "Familial Kinslayer" >.>. Don't think there was much else I could do - the timing would mess with our prosperity ambition, if it fired despite her being already locked in our dungeon. So with that we are down to 39 vassal limit. Also spotted that our newest city in Tynea (Fedorki) somehow ended up under Daylam Persia =.=...
r5OSCkk.jpeg

Well this ensures that we are more tied to those +Diplomacy +General Opinion books :/... Dammit.

Year 1320
======================

Damn. That is such a bummer. Well we continue our work - now onto fixing one of 2 mayors that broke down last year and we do get some nicer results of our breeding program in capital. Sadly both Smallpox and Camp Fever spread more...
GtrNEJ8.jpeg

So far no prosperity dropped I think... Still not happy for this happening.

As month pass the epidemy keeps spreading >.>... Seems like we are right on track for another few big disease outbreaks in Empire this century as well. Game also give us another Adventurer threat to keep us on our feet - this time from Mongolia itself. Ehhh... Which basically makes dealing with previous one wasted. Oh no - wait. It will happen after our prosperity ambition. So we are safe. Still I would rather spend my energy as a player on something else. Game pisses me off more as we get Gardener event chain for 2nd time. Declined it already last year and now we get it again? Thought that declining will eliminate it from event pool but now I stand corrected. This time it seems we are onto Gardening events instead of other Business options. Good think I didn't decided to overstack on demense/vassals to lower our income so far. We would just throw our money out of the window
CQUBBH5.jpeg

Probably should have prohibited foreign wars to make sure we can't be targetted for lands outside our desired borders. Oh well. Now we have those fools to deal with.

Across current month we first inherit Minor Viceroyalty of Ishim and then Turgay. Well... Not sure why they do keep on dying so quickly to natural causes :V... Wanted some of them to die 5 years after but not like 2-3 years after appointing them. We also eliminate few more Dukes of Vasyugan but it gets us nowhere. The titles only start accumulating on other claimants... Maybe in the end once we exhaust all possible inheritors we will get it? This would allow us to fix several multi county vassals at once. But will take some dedication as probably we are looking into 20+ Assassinations to exhaust all claimants.

In May Emperor Dergun of the Suomi dies and his 2 year old son Sampo takes over. Both of them are Finish but the Heir King of Vladimir is Komi. It was such a bizairre decision of them to convert to culture of one of their demense provinces (with capital before ascending from vassal to overlord) as there isn't many such provinces anyway. What's more the only Finnish vassal is Cathar (Catholic Heresy) so he won't help them anyway. Yet it enables all indepedence factions to fire and probably stops conversion to Komi culture of many provinces we ourself had made sure to replace local aristocracy.

Given that nothing happens this is good place to look into another Land Census surveyed before this part:
wcRM0bh.jpeg

Progress is visible if compared to previous one. Still we have some uphill battle ahead.

Since last census we got 3 more cities (95->98) and overall wealth within all our provinces went from 10.404 to 12.404. So it's not bad but will definetely start slowing down as time progresses cause we just simply don't have enough holdings within to keep on getting ahead. Part of it also comes from slowly building up Prosperity across empire with newly built Hospitals (we went from just lvl 3 in capital duchy to lvl 4 empire wide). Despite many epidemics we went by almost half of prosperity level from 1.56 to 1.99. Probably won't prioritize higher hospital levels (next upgrade would cost around 180 thousand gold for another +20% Disease Resistance) cause the monetary gain from it won't be as big and we have other higher priority list on "To Buy List". Lastly on topic of Technology thanks to having built those Libraries in Hospitals quickly after last census we at least have some +Research Spread Speed modifiers everywhere. Not included in that list are many single province counts Stewards that are tirelessly working on "Spread Economic Technology" as it varies too much to be kept track of. Still the technology spread progresses as much as technological breakthroughs - between 6 to 8 levels in each category. Some time in the future we will add another +25% Research Spread Speed building in Hospitals Empire wide to help but that's it. Not much more we can do empire wide beside switching which province we held personally to feed tech faster to far away corners of Permo-Siberia. Right now we can see that Mari Duchy is struggling yet we are holding adjecent county in Veliky-Ustug to help. Hoping that Cumania and Siberia will catch up more as they were far more behind but have better average research spread pace. Beside all my complaining this is quite something - currently our empire is basically having 5+ levels (out of 8) in each technology inside category. That's a lot of things to unlock in holdings and quite some % modifiers for levies we acquire (as well as retinue limits for our brave vassals and remember that we are right now inheriting Minor Viceroys Retinues). Of course tech isn't evenly spread and things like Construction is ahead of things like Trade Practises or some Military categories.

Year 1321
======================

Year starts with news about 3rd disease outbreak this time in capital itself. We have Measles (-10% income). As they say when it rains - it pours. All of those epidemics will seriously affect our vassal income. With our annual income in the thousand it is really highlighted as each epidemy shaves off hundred of gold from the tab. Made me realize that our prosperity ambition reward is probably lost cause those Epidemics wipe out all prosperity progress towards next level. Making in hindsight (20/20 as always) dealing with Arnaz cousin totally worthless cause we weren't going to benefit from Prosperity ambition anyway. We just got that timer ticking for second run for prosperity some 30 years in the future.

At this time I took a break from playing as I was starting to get tilted. Which would make me play in more forceful way that would be not good. Worked out that we can deal with Kinslaying trait through converting to Islam or staying as Catholic for quite some time (as Pope can forgive us). Not too keen on fighting Aztecs for absolution of Arnaz sins though - I'm more into "just giving up on Rome's Pontiff".

Did delayed court maintenance. Number of kids hovers around 21 still. Did kick out quite a few courtiers so our court got smaller (down to 71 characters). We also found one Female Khazarian Commander (with Brave and Heavy Infantry Leader) for now. Did some invites after, which I had to seclude our court due to epidemy in capital. Soon our elderly cancer suffering muslim wife arrives. We marry her for some not unsubstantial monetary gain (around 2.000+ gold) but due to being secluded we can't secretly convert to her faith to get rid of Kinslayer trait. Meanwhile diseases ravage our empire:
Cqfa1pr.jpeg

Two Counties already got depopulated. It seems quite black&white system - county either depopulates all towards minor depopulation or doesn't lose prosperity levels at all. Also didn't know single county can have 2 epidemics at the same time. That's a -65% income modifier from province D:

Next weeks are spent on helping infected courtiers giving our experienced Court Physician something to excel at. Both Camp Fever and Slow Fever stop spreading but Measle keep expanding month by month. By June it's affecting 4 southern counties in duchy of Perm + 4 surrounding counties belonging to vassals. So far our 25% Disease Resistance (after substracting penalty for max prosperity - 20%) was doing little. We also finally timed out on penalty to vassal opinion from our unlawful revocations (-75 opinion). We still have 2 duchies too many but we will deal with it after prosperity ambition is fulfilled allowing us to revoke again stress free. One of our southern newer vassals did something constructive and conquered county from Byzantine Empire rebels in the Emba Steppe. Nice. Would love to widen this critical bridge between west and east of future 2nd sister Komi empire lands.

With August we get sick as well. Well maybe this modifier "Taking it easy" will finally pay for itself. We lose Mayor in Blagovescen but his son is Quick and has 11 Stewardship. Willing to gamble on him so we marry him off to Genius courtier (23 stewardship) and problem is solved with chance of creating future capable offspring. We start preparing for treatment as also Mayor of Cucataw dies. Some marriages are instantly made. We have to appoint our Eunuch as new Steward. Soon he reports discovering secret tunnels again. Not this event chain :V... Great timing. We are sick so our Personal Combat Score is low. Don't want to take Craven though =.=.

We get mild case of Measle and successful treatment so we overall have +1 Health from whole situation. We continue with this event chain and then decide to imprison one of our courtiers (one of older women we had to be married off) that get's discovered while exploring tunnels under castle. We also inherit county of Sakmara (lone Jain province in Bashkiria duchy that no vassal so far managed to convert). As November is about to begin I spot that both Camp Fever and Slow Fever start to disappear.

Within first week of November Bogomilist Karluk county of Syganak does get converted to Orthodoxy. Finally. Even better as next in line is 17 year old with 15 stewardship (optimal number for culture conversion from adjecent source counties) and his father is in our less hospitable dungeons. We could even kill him right now but let's hope he manages to die on his own so there are no hard feeling with his heir.

Till end of year it is "absolute cinema" as secret tunnels event chains continues despite me imprisoning that courtier. We get the same fight as previously and I don't feel too great about Emperor's Arnaz chances. Not sure what are the weights but our sick character doesn't seem to be man for the job from what game presents me in event windows. That said he proves himself to be man of the hour. We succeed and get +1 Martial on top of Cynical (our 6 trait not counting Illness). Whew! That was nerve wrecking!
BvcYlFj.jpeg

That's one way to kill boredoms during sickness I guess.

Year 1322
======================

We do assign educators but can't kick out few more courtiers that turned out mediocre due to isolation. Damn those pandemics are annoying. We do quite quickly acquire the nickname on our Emperor and it is much better than "the Mule" I was expecting:
7hphSS3.jpeg

Quite quick to call him that after just a decade of ruling but ok x] The same nickname as his grandfather (who was brawny and fat to be frank so it fitted more). Bizairre that this is the first nickname that get's doubled among played characters. Usually it isn't so great in my playthroughs. Probably mostly due to all the prestige.

Takes up to March to finally finish prosperity ambition. Sadly we still have Measles ravaging our core demense and some remnants of other diseases east of Ural mountains. With that we have no ambition to take. Also in 3 more months Mr Adventurer arrives >.>. Before that we inherit Minor Viceroyalty of Baskhkiria. So have to re-assign it again.
JPrBezC.jpeg

More troops from thin air! It's annoying as it is for county we don't even want to keep as it was conquered by our vassals.

Our freshly assigned Count of Jain Sakmara died in record time >.>. So we have to assign another high stewardship character and those are in short supply. Something is lately going really bad when so many characters living only 3 years after getting title. Perhaps "Invite Holy Man" decision is generating characters with lower that average health? Troops are raised and moved towards our holdings in Tura and Osha. Personal levies will suffice to crush those Uyghur's fools. Not upsetting vassals for future revocations also will come in handy.

This will take quite some time as we need to march troops all the way from Perm to Mongolia. So for meantime invaders can just rampage through our not developed castles (and some tribes too) in this God forsaken lands. Our Emperor do recovers from Measles but we are still suffering -9 diplomacy from Seclusion+Kinslayer trait, which somewhat affects our income (well that is quite a combination).
OsbUMlV.jpeg

As I haven't prepared the enemies had free hand so far. They didn't go straight for provinces we care for so it's ok.

With start od December Measles starts wearing off but I don't rejoin the world yet. We will have to soon but let's wait a little more for it to vanish more. We still have time before we need to assign commanders. Winter gets severe but luckily as enemy hordes enter our real borders they are stopped thanks to level 6 fortifications present in even our less technologically advanced lands in north-eastern Cumania. Would be ugly if they could just ruin prosperity there due to me not raising troops ahead of time.

Year 1323
======================

Few more bad courtiers are thrown out at the start of year and we try to manage our armies winter's quarters but fail as sudden change of weather kills 7.000 of our personal levies =.=. We start writing another Theorem for Hermetic society and working on 2 bad Mayors and some courtier to kill. As we finally rejoin the outside world it's time to deal with that Kinslaying trait. I quickly navigate through secret faith conversions to Zikri and back and voila. Sadly at the time I missed that getting rid of it this way means also losing Coronation perk (must check in the future but I don't think this carries to Islam characters). So it wasn't free but still it is better to have more diplomacy to not eat penalties on vassal tax (which in our case is tremendously high) rather than have more +General Opinion. Probably could get it fixed during Crusade but the MTTH isn't short and last time we got it it was more of a lucky roll.
tR741DU.jpeg

As we are about to start fighting invaders they finally arrive into North-Eastern Cumania/Siberia. Will be some intense fighting for next half a year.

On 21st of March we excommunicate new tripple count of Magnitaya (our next assassination target). This helps getting people eager to help us in this endevaour. It's not like we are using those Excommunications on anything else atm.

Fast forwarding to 11th June - Our Ecclesiarch and Court Physician dies. We do have replacements on hand. We do arrange for marriage between Arnaz sister (Nyumina Permyakid) and heir to Poyaid Shahdom. This Orthodox Afghan realm located in south-eastern Persia can help us with over 20.000 troops in case of us needing it to deal with Aztecs. They are also actively conquering Arabian penninsula so it's a good match. What impresses me about this AI is how tirelessly it works on replacing freshly acquired provinces with their culture characters.

Month later - 9th July and our Italian Court tutor gets murdered >.> Ouch. That's was uncalled for. Our courtiers got to no good and it catches me totally by suprise. I don't have any replacement on hand and she was quite a character. Once again whenever I find myself occupied with fighting, civil-internal matters of realms start falling apart.

We finally get to fight first of invading armies as their warscore reached 85%. They broke their host into 3 parts so we have 3:1 advantage in numbers at least initially. What's worse as you can see on screenshot below, they don't even have proper nomadic army but feudal mix:
VbSbc0s.jpeg

First engagments goes easily. Not sure why lately AI stopped reinforcing it's armies. Maybe the distance in Siberia is just too big?

This battle is rather satysfying as we are killing over 200 enemies in pursuit. So we do quite a damage on them and then have to rapidly evacuate due to overstacking there. We move to relieve county of Katun in duchy of Ob next and should arrive with some time to spare. Remnants of defeated enemy army instead of vanishing - retreats towards Mongolia.

Before end of August we fix Mayor of Cukataw and move onto other city that needs fixing (the one within Perm county with our sister located there). We decide to strike an alliance with Afghans. We catch another Uyghur army in September:
9ADygwA.jpeg

Another battle and another victory altough with more losses due to them countering our center

Another fight with cheeky nomads goes somewhat poorly. We do enter melee and got countered losing 1200 then 1000 men on first 2 days in center but also delete 4500 enemies on 2nd day due to other flanks countering their tactic. So with just those two engagments we killed half of invading force. We don't have time to rest - we move onto another 8.000 army after reshuffling troops to even the morale of devastated center. So we force march our troops under Azra-Ava but +42% movement speed isn't enough and due to beggining of Winter in October we do lose another 1.000 men. Ouch. Almost 10.000 of our personal levies lost so far in this war.
1dia3tE.jpeg

Now that I think about it - Mongolia feudalising really shot itself in the foot. They have the worst tech so pound for pound their levies are the worst. This also includes event troops of invaders (cause they have associated starting province).

At this point we have them beaten. Still the warscore balances around 0% as they have bunch of counties in Mongolia occupied and still 9.000 troops to their name. We can't get anymore from battles so will have to slowly recapture holdings. But not before winter, which will prolong this whole ordeal. We also get an interesting Quick traited Mayor taking over one city set in education of whom we helped previously. He is married to 22 stewardship courtier and we cross fingers for him to overcome Measle. Will probably be the best steward with 15 in attribute and +11 from spouse. Resulting in some monsterous bonus income :)

Year 1324
======================

World is developing while we are occupied with busy work. Cathar England reemerged and is balancing control over the British Isles with Catholic Eire. Aztecs slowly eat Western Europe (right now attacking Orthodox Bohemia, who were out attacking Pomerania). Thought they would do better but the remnants of Catholics are bravely banding together in Barcelona and Bavaria. We have quite badass Hispanic Empress that despite all odds stacked against her managed to pull together remaining Empire and due to high Martial is barely avoiding further losses (and if for example they lose duchy of Sevillia then whole Hispanic Empire disintegrates due to exclave rules into 3 parts). Greek Empire of Carpathia disintegrated due to exclave rules into Emperor inside Anatolia, big Croatian king in the west and Persian Shah (that owns vassal in our city in Tynea!) in the east. We count on Daylam losing ownership of city of Fedorki soonish as their leader is 66 years old. Holy Roman Empire succumbed to Cathar Milan but at least Egypt keeps going under quite long line of Catholic Sultanas. Armenia losses to remainind Muslim Hasan Sultanate around Baghdad but at least Orthodox Afghans to the east are getting stronger. India suffers revolt against Chinese (who also have revolt inside China). The most scary development is ongoing Byzantine Empire collapse. After losing 1/3 of their holdings due to Empire of Carpathia secession now they seem to be on the way to lose remaining 1/2 holdings in another Civil war. One of their revolts for example claimed Caspian Steppe from them - giving us opportunity to invade those Paulician heretics and with little luck push border between our spheres of influence between Georgia and Alania. One of the reasons I don't push for any marriage alliance with Greeks - cause bloody Greeks as always are maximally unstable.
pLEZdrV.jpeg

Blobs are present but map develops with them still breaking apart.

Back in Perm I arrange for another (3rd this part) Italian court tutor. Not gonna lie - underhanded move from my subjects. We haven't utilized previous court tutor nearly enough. Managed to find replacement but it is more for now and should be on the lookout for new young character to take over this duty. The same with Commanders (3/8 atm...). We continue our war by siegeing back lost holdings, as county of Ob is bravely losing only 4.6% of morale every 12 days while our other crews in winter have 20%+ pace of progress on retaking lost lands.
CmFHOjA.jpeg

Domestic issues. As you can see Uyghurs mustered remaining warriors into single force and try to capture another province while winter is still present.

Unlucky for us on 1st of May Consumption breaks out in Ashli county (Duchy of Bolgharia) =.=... Well... That's 4th Epidemy within last few years. Lets see how far does it spread (-25% income modifier). So far I don't see much difference with that extra 20% Disease Resistance. Emperor Arnaz does succesfully summons Divine Being and earns himself a +3 diplomacy for next 5 years. We also arrange for another battle against remaining invaders (that suffered 2 bad siege events thus lost almost 2.000 men).
J5ZOb1u.jpeg

Now that I think about it battle between those models aren't common across playthroughs

Invading Leader didn't bother commanding much and paid price for it. This would be much tougher if he used his nice commanding stats (+40% Heavy Infantry, +50% Morale Damage and +30% Morale Defence). After brief battle he is reduced to 3.500 warriors and we move onto anoter set of occupied provinces to start taking them back. We get business event in August but not the one we were waiting for - Craftsmen guild in Pilva (that has whooping 1 city so nothing exciting to get more from that type of holding).
cHpkFd7.jpeg

Catholicism is kind of lost right now with huge Aztec Nahua empire in the heart of western Europe. Any kingdoms taken back will just get absorbed again.

In September we get called in to war against Uyghur/Pecheneg Kingdom of Transoxiana for Balkh by our Afghan allies. Happy to join as they are winning. Other side does get help from Greek Duke of Khorasan but still our allies prevail for now (40% warscore and won ugly battle attacking into mountains). Empire sends 6.000 of retinues to start siegeing Transoxiana capitals from our side. This is somewhat less of a hassle cause this might reduce number of altaic culture province thus characters meaning less raiding parties and adventurer's hosts to deal with. They will also be asked to help us with Daylam as sadly we didn't get our city of Fedorki back. Oh ye - Crusade for Italy (against Milan) also fires but I'm not interested - too small of an undertaking. Probably even if we supported Catholicism again it won't have enough time to grow through Crusades to matter for us in the long run. As we were moving into our Monoglian lands, we encountered enemies on their last stand in Mountains of Abakan county.
JSdO0Qn.jpeg

Enemies can't catch a break. They get trounced even with big terrain advantage and 2 narrow flanks. Meaning their army quality is so inferior that all that matters little against our Finno-Ugric Heavy Infantry.

We humilate them again but even with 1.000 men remaining they refuse any sort of Peace. That's foolhardy. Just eats up valuable time and gold we have to pay them. Think it might also disable some events :/... We also get province conversion getting rid of that Jain island inside our Orthodox borders and allowing local count to start rolling on culture conversion chances. The more culture conversion we get - the more stable future 3rd Komi Empire will be.

Year 1325
======================

January brings unexpected quick conclusion to Bagha's invasion - we manage to assault both remaining counties (very weak fort) and thus enforce our demands and before month is halfway over we imprison this cheeky Uyghur to swiftly execute him by burning on stake. Then after our troops move over we can declare more wars. For starters we need to extract city from Daylam. Turns out... They have 3 of our cities. Meaning they took over one of our multicity mayors and then they fractured =.=. Not happy to fight them 3 times to take back what was ours. Daamn. Remember that we don't want to siege the city province itself (it is ours) so we will have to capture everything else in those not exactly small realms. We also proceed with war on Byzantine Empire for last county of Itil (on our side of Volga; turns out navigable rivers count as sea regions for exclave rules so it won't secede), against Paulician heretics in Caspian steppe, lastly 3 different nomadic realms within Kingdom of Khazaria (cleanup). Together - 7 wars including ally's one. Something worth raising our troops for. Most of them will be over quickly as close half the targets have single holding. Still we will encounter joint Persian-Pecheneg opposition (Daylam+Transoxiana kingdoms).
aPfQ7m0.jpeg

Time to fix plenty of border gore. Eradicating more Altaic culture provinces in the long run and creating another Komi realm in the process to the south. Also further Jurchen instability.

Initial months offer us chain of defeats as some of the nomadic enemies jump straight onto our vassal levies trying to gather in our rallying points. One war (for county in duchy of Bandja) also gets invalidated as our Viceroy there died. He was holding the claim. Well damn. We will figure it out later with just our retinues. For time being we organize western theather of war and win against 2 armies (heretics and nomads) there and start siegeing 3 counties. In the east last county in Syr-dara duchy gives us a lot of grief as they hunt our small armies and kill around 3-4.000 of Permo-Siberian armies. Takes time to organize around 15.000 strong host to chase them off and finally give them battle in October. Before that in June we got Gardener event chain offered for the 3rd time T^T... Also several Mayors broke just after war was declared :/... Have to evacuate our 6.000 retinues from Transoxiana after capturing top holdings (including their capital) as huge 19.000 strong Persian army of Daylam moves towards us (taking attrition in the process). That's somewhat a problem cause I gathered 18.500 men there as I wasn't expecting them to straight move towards us. If those 15.000 men from battle with Nomads below make it in time it should be ok. One more note - we are down to 1/8 commanders so I make some hasty appointments.
pklsKEB.jpeg

Time for revenge. Probably should prepared for those nomads better but time was of essence.

We win handily but there is little time to reinforce against Persians. We will have to do with what we have. Clicked on "automatically appoint commanders" to get anyone to command. Discovered that we haven't lost our previous 2 commanders - those slackers just left the military while still alive. The AI appointed them again =3"... Weirdly this battle happens first against some smaller army and then all of them roll straight into melee =.=
dafHYqR.jpeg

o_O What Magic is this?

Have no idea what happened that we rolled straight into melee on 2nd-3rd day of battle with really bad melee tactics, while AI was on some good tactic selection. Initially we got slaughtered (our center got countered by their center big time) but our reinforcements arrived in time. That Narrow flank allowed us to turn everything around and by end we killed slightly more of them that they killed us. During that time we also took over county of Atyrau and enforced demands so 1 war down, 5 more to go. But this will have to wait for next part, as we run out of time.

I've never seen the event chain continue after imprisoning the courtier either...

Oh wow, I never have gotten that Famous Laboratory buff yet in all my time playing CK2. That's a neat one right there. Also Aztec Empire is huge, they're definitely there to stay unless mega revolts destroy their event troops piece by piece.

Aztec event troops evaporated quite some time ago (before previous Crusade some 30 years ago). Everything they now have are levies from owned lands. This is starting to be a problem because they are deleting Jewish characters generating courts in Western Europe for us to use. Right now they are outside Permo-Siberia diplomatic range but probably soon as they move eastward we should get in touch. Will have to create some alliances to tackle them - preferably Byzantine Empire but might be not enough because as noted in part - they just got three times smaller/less powerful. I think about snatching some claimant from their family, converting him to Catholicism and waging war in his name with Allies. Will be tough due to Offensive Pagan +30% Levy size in holdings x] That's why I'm impressed by AI - they were dealing with those revolts and civil wars quite nicely - replacing natives with Nahuas Aztec Nobility.

Part LXVIII (1326-1333)

YED4icp.jpeg

Part LXVIII (1326-1333)

Year 1326
======================

So back to warring huh. Suprisingly doing more of that war business that I expected when starting this AAR but it has it's benefits. As you can see from the screenshot of Emperor - we somehow preserved Coronation trait. Maybe it needed to unpause to get rid of it and we well - didn't. Still Arnaz development went awry - we lost diligent and are right now up to 6 traits. Most of them not really good. We are still glued to Business (cause RNGesus was not merciful to let us start Architect event chain despite 3 attempts at Gardener so far) but after that I'm not sure. Theology no longer easily fixes Greedy to replace it with Diligent thanks to Cynical. It usually does something around Cynical-Zealous axis but it can take some time. Right now we are up to 6 over demense limit vassal bishops, 3 similar Mayors with 1 extra that is vulnerable to becoming bad due to low number of courtiers and other one that is trying to produce Permyakid offspring to fix his case of being lowborn. Our educational efforts gave fruits in few last years - we have 2 female and 1 male courtier with over 15 stewardship under 20 years of age to use right now. All of them are lowborn which is also important. Still lacking on Commanders but I appointed 17 years old Ashava 'the Clueless' to start her training. She is Komi with only 13 Martial despite lvl 3 martial education but has Diligent and Patient traits. Education upgrade will make her usable and any commander traits will be interesting on her. On top of that I do invite 4 more Jews for converting as we just ran out (and want a little reserve to not have to bother with it once I concentrate on war fully). Soon (9th January) Empress Sholah dies at 60 out of Cancer. Well we got some use of her (conversion).
vJfqIIU.jpeg

We start winning in west and gathering troops to push into east.

So back to wars! We start taking holdings from Byzantines, which will start giving us that slowly ticking warscore. That's good cause this war will take those 3+ years for certain. We also push out Paulician Heretics in Caspian steppe after defeating them in previous part. No offense happens yet in Daylam-Transoxiana front due to harsh winter. We do hunt down those 3.000 nomads in the east and by May we catch them in Turgay, as our Afghan allies win their own war.
c84nwWC.jpeg

Time to get even more revenge for problems they caused us

Battle seems like it will conclude in skirmish phase but enemies decide to hastily cgarge into melee, while we are doing much better initially. Just as battle ends we do also siege out their capital - getting 100% warscore and ending the war (down to 3). Given that we have 81% warscore against heretics, who are beaten once and 33% against Byzantines that are preoccupied with their Civil war, now is the time to push into Persia. As time passes we do fix one over the demense limit Mayor on 17th May, get another Theurgy event that sadly has soft fail (not that it matters much but I would really like "Divine Epiphany" modifier) and cordinate troops to meet main Persian army that is coming back:
PEHTEOV.jpeg

Two new Commanders (Ashava 'the Clueless and Irge) are given opportunity to learn

Battle starts well and soon our right wing charges into their commander-less opposition. Then enemy right charges our left but even without countering their tactic (we got Advance) the difference in damage is staggering (328 vs 1589...). Soon the battle is over but as I get distracted with internal empire matters I clicked through the result window so instead provided you with war overview for final battle result. We are eating through succession of Vasyugan county in the background by removing character after character.

We have to replace Minor Viceroy of Qazan and also after some news from our Mercenary Company (up to 13.1 thousand gold in their coffeers) we siphon away one of their Commanders - Italian Silvano - 36 years old, Brilliant Strategist with 22 Martial. As our armies pour into Daylam from north and Afghan allies advance from south-east, remaining 6000 Persians try to tackle one of our siege crews (4.000 men). Did catch it so over 8.000 reinforcements under "Organiser" leader were set to reinforce them thus we only suffer 5 days of fighting while outnumbered.
9dEgmKj.jpeg

Ongoing destruction of opposing forces

Turns out I read it wrong and it was just 5 days till movement is locked. So things become a tad bit more dramatic: we do get into melee few days before relief army arrives. Our forces are on brink of geting routed when our awaited troops arrive, switching tactics and course of battle. Our side instantly routes their left wing and then keeps rolling flank after flank as it keep picking counter tactics dealing first 5096 damage per day (instantly destroying their center) and then together with center both of them counter remaining enemy right wing (2968 and 7448 damage dealt) killing over 2400 enemies in a day. Wow! We lost over 1.000 men but kill over 5.000. Before end of year we are pretty much having most of Daylam under siege. Not mentioned previously - sometime in this year we also got Business event pulse which got us another 'Artisan Workshop' for decade granting extra 10% City tax in Pilva county (containing single city) and got Apothecary event which improves our Court Physician by +2 Learning for 739.8 gold.
vo0S6Qh.jpeg

Smooth sailing so far. We basically have Daylam under siege.

Year 1327
======================

Next year we have 3 twelve year olds to educate. Two of them seem promising as future commanders but only one of them is Italian. Some of Volga-Bulgaria is still affected by Consumption that erupted in May 1324. As we are besieging 11 counties of Daylam right now, we have enough spare time to send our character to gather hermetic ingredients. But first I have to appoint vacant Apprentice and I pick our Eunuch due to him having "Gardener" trait. It should help with picking herbs and want to check how much. We do have some problems though - Byzantines just ended their Civil war so right now we might expect 76.000 strong army marching into our lands. Should take some time first in which we could finish Persia (right now it is +46% warscore against Daylam and +72% against Byzantine Empire).
VhBmXrW.jpeg

Time to stock up. It starts getting to the point that we get short on ingredients before we can restock.

Greeks don't show up at least till summer. They have some army around Odessa, that is spotable because Basilea husband is commanding it. Not much warscore manages to tickle for us during this time (up to 75%). We do ruck up almost 30% warscore extra against Daylam. Yet in June some issues arrive - peasant revolt just behind our frontlines:
FVILjKl.jpeg

Not huge issue but annoying. We are also able to enforce on Daylam and we do.

Soon as some spare armies are relegated to pacify the Emba steppe, we get 100% warscore against Daylam and can enforce. We do cause we will need to take back 2 other cities in the future, so starting this truce timer is important. With that we can recall our troops from Persia into southern Permo-Siberia to prepare for eventual arrival of Greeks - our semi-last war. By end of July we also are in the process of resolving rebelion. We lose 400 men but kill 1200 and with that we get again 10 years of -4% Revolt Risk empire wide character modifier.

Some 9.000 Greek Army moves to recapture their lost holding inside our borders. Think this is great opportunity to get that "Major" battle if it counts to get the war over sooner. We manage to concentrate over 23.000 men from returning eastern and closest western armies in Daylam. Those are good odds. Soon the battle begins:
wkOc7Pa.jpeg

Isolated Greek Army that tries to retake what they lost.

As expected we are doing fine (no melee). Sadly it wasn't enough of their troops so we are stuck at 99% warscore. It isn't tragic as this war was ongoing for 34 months already so in 2 more months we should be able to conclude it. Which still falls within estimation we had.

Year 1328
======================

Year ends with bizairre sight of Basilissa herself leading army on offensive from Arctic sea. Well if I bothered we could get her for not small ransom but at this point I don't think it is worth paying levies so much and risking her just teleporting away before battle. We just press with our demands to secure another county in Pontic-Steppe. We might start thinking of making up for this war as I would want Alliance with Greeks to counter-balance Aztec empire later.
B9JSJJG.jpeg

Everyone performs this strategy of sailing around Europe to naval invade from Arctic xD. No good results so far.

Right now this newly acquired county requires extraction from Khazarian noble there but before that our retinues alone will eliminate last Nomadic realm inside our borders (war previously ended due to death of our minor viceroy whose CB we pressed). Takes just up to March to give them battle on their capital. News from Western Europe arrive - Catholics prevailed over heretics in Italy in just 4 years of fighting:
U4zRYJQ.jpeg

Good for them but it doesn't change much right now. They are still on beating end of Aztec stick.

In March some old problems reappear - on 13th we have looters in Eastern Cumania. Due to ongoing feudalisation of Mongolia they are made of Light Infantry (3.600 of them). Which are far easier to defeat. This fracture of nomadic steppes also weakens it furthers as now they can't gather as much horde troops and their new tribal/feudal levies are also few and far between. After delegating border guards from Silkroad we do get positive event from Jurchen Master-Engineer on 17th. Capital enjoys having "Fireworks Guild" for 10 years (+10% Levy Size, +25% Garrison Size, +1 Mil Tech point income). That's nice. As is the slow process of calming down vassals after long period of having their troops borrowed (-15 opinion penalty from levy raised too long still). At long last we can enforce peace on last expansion war we started and thus present what we got from all that wars:
D86ROmJ.jpeg

Nicely carving out future 3rd Komi empire borders. Our sphere of Influence grows and number of Altaic provinces goes down.

Due all that fighting we somehow started developing new commanders. Irge got 'Direct Leader" providing +35% when leading center and Ashava ended with so-so "Trickter" for +49.5% Experimentality. We also get down to 4 over the demense limit Mayors but are unable to proceed due to lack of characters to use. One thing I did not expect was that we want to keep seperate lowborn breeding projest. Which gets somewhat tough due to court size limit. It's one of those things that it sounds perfect and easy before you keep on doing it for over a century I guess.

By end of June we manage to give battle to Nomadic Light infantry in county of Markakol with Commanders we are currently training. Sadly forgot to make screenshots. We won but didn't improve any commanding character. Well it will happen eventually. We start re-establishing diplomatic ties with Byzantine empire. Finger crossed that we no longer need to fight them or what we want between us. Their last province above Daylam should secede due to game rules. Allowing us creating nice and clean borders.
KdPAQ8g.jpeg

Beggining of another diplomatic long-shot. It might or not pan out. If Basilissa losses power then we can take back marriage offer. Still we might need to eat a bullet and help current Greek Emperor to hold onto power to get help on beating up Aztecs in the future. Though this purple Empire is crumbling a lot...

8th September we get another converison of Ashkenazi allowing us to fix another city setup, we start extracting triple count of Magnitaya allowing me to give out duchy and sort another ducal title (Yaik and Turgay). Soon both Viceroys of Bandja and Mordva die so I have more replacement. Rest of year is spent on those administrative duties and some adjustment. We get another city into our network (from Yaik Duchy). As we revoke we use this opportunity to scry but sudden vassal deaths and inheritances complicate it a little prolonging the effort. We do reach "Confident Seer" modifier level (+1 to all attributes and little prestige). I also realise it is high time for us to send another Eunuch to china. So the currency is building up but luckily so far I do keep on finding great "gifts".

Year 1329
======================

After few real days of break I sit again. Having calmed down (waging wars in CK2 always makes me rush things) we return. Usual court maintenance is performed - we have to brew potion of Eudaimonia for our Court Tutor who got stressed (so he can keep getting stressed but also generate more Diligent kids which improves their odds at getting higher education levels). We have like 2 potential commander candidates growing up and more than enough gold to start thinking about spending it. Decided to push another +25% Research Spread Rate building in Hospitals across empire to speed up this process. This is the last thing that helps so much for us to do and with around 120 years still in game, it might make some difference.
ekam1AE.jpeg

One county was building something and one wealthy count managed to build most of hospital buildings herself.

After that we continue with killing through inheritance line to duchy of Vasyugan. Given opportunity we bravely retract non-de jure vassal in Cheremisia from her (as we will kill her soon) and the gamble goes through. So little more of internal border cleanup is performed. Putting us closer to being sorted out.

As things have calmed down it is time to find another Empress. Dating pool shrinked somewhat but I do find not so young 30 year old with Quick trait that is willing to marry quickly. We might not get a lot of kids out of her but her stats aren't also bad and well if something goes south we might "arrange for yet 3rd Permo-Siberian Empress.
dYCaLBU.jpeg

Not perfect but due to all chaos related to managing multiple wars it will have to do. At least stats are quite good.

Business focus gives back again in October. Sadly it is another Minting (which at this point is waste of time). We already have Greedy IRC so there is nothing really that we want (except avoiding being awarded Deceitful trait due to trait limit). As weeks and months tick so does discontent among vassals due to raising their levies (from -11 to -5 opinion penalty). We are well situated and just wait for Business to start that damn "Tower building" event chain with all the money we need (and then some extra for extra holding slot event from prosperity focus).

Most of the time is spent on murdering through inheritors to Duchy of Vasyugan. The progress was there until son of previous Duchess went into hiding. Which for time being halts this endevaour. At least we manage to remedy another case of internal bordergore due to retracting vassal in Kazakh. Two of Minor Viceroyalties also revert to us so new high Learning characters with barren wives are placed there to keep on generating those technology points. We also get single basic retinue consisting of heavy cavalry which catches my eye. To be honest we could give bigger gold starting funds to Minor Viceroys so they keep on building those retinues we will inherit. This is one way of going around retinue limit albeit quite random in what we get (as other retinue was light infantry type).
eW6WaWt.jpeg

Huh another tough call on taking the trait or not. We are close to trait limit.

As year comes to an end our Emperor Arnaz finally decides to visit his Siberian gardens to de-age himself by 2 years. Right now we don't have inheritance figured out so extra years will be needed despite us somewhat messing thing around (trait wise). Was also debating for long time taking or not taking Saintly bloodline trait. Decided to as extra diplomacy is really nice on making sure we are eating less vassal tax penalty (this isn't the end of world as not collected taxes remain in vassal hands instead of evaporating).

Year 1330
======================

Year starts and I count 18 children in our court. Somewhat less than previously but well still impressive for my tastes. We need to keep on educating them if we want to resolve our current administrative woes. On that topic we do manage to cure situation in City of Arbuga by replacing title holder but that's that. We ran out of high stewardship males to do much more. Neither prosperity nor Business fires events we want so we just sit on money. So I decide for another round of construction:
AUMG4oE.jpeg

Once again evenly develop all castles currently held by Emperor Arnaz. Stables are the only thing that is available everywhere so investment in horses it is.

Not much else happens. We just kept on waiting. Not much news from wide world either. This year is just that - uneventful. Can't proceed more with assassination, don't want to push unlawful acts as suzerain further, have to wait on more wars. The last thing of note to be recorded of history of this year is that in August new Empress becomes pregnant. Which is quite good as she doesn't have many fertile years left in her. Getting son is obviously good (even is he is not genetically gifted we have plenty of time to see how he turns out) but even daughters are in demand now (for alliances and well for fixing city administration).
BS4vRSk.jpeg

Finger crossed for Quick heir! Would be an upgrade from Shrewd father we are currently playing.

Year 1331
======================

From now on my notes get really scarce. Not much changed in court from previous year though. We do manage to educate good commander (Siege Expert). We do quick Mari Minor Viceroyalty (inheriting another heavy cavalry retinue and unknown amount of tech points). Things could be better if not for 46/41 vassal limit and being 3 duchies over the limit (resulting in -30 opinion among vassals). That said we are somewhat stable as Arnaz is already quite many years since his coronation in this ruling business. We will oversee this administration reform during his lifetime. One of reasons to keep prolonging him with Fountain of Youth. The more patient we are the less economic waste we incure (internal wars are a big no-no).

As I keep on waiting for economic events - heir is born in March. He is quick! So he definetely looks usable.
Kxzy6tU.jpeg

Probably one of our few last characters to play as. Get the feeling I did terribly on the whole breeding program so far. Can't remember any longer line of Genius characters.

He gets focus that will make him more likely to get Diligent. This will pretty much set him up as we want. Then we can get other traits during playing as him. I suspect it won't be long reign as his father is destinied to live into his 70 with all the de-aging (that will shave off 10-12 years). Of course I'm hoping for as many as possible of 3 Monastic Ward events that improve basic attributes as possible. Always tell myself to check if the last section of those events (the one that gives random virtue after ward becomes an adult) requires monastic society member to be his last guardian. Cause we were missing it a lot. Will have to open game files again to answer that question.

Some time after that jouyful moment, new mother losses stressed trait and our character develops Kind due to intervention in associated event. That's ok'ish. We really are pushing it when it comes to trait limit but I can't say no for extra Diplomacy. It literally means more income for us due to lowering penalty on vassal taxation. And they say it doesn't pay off to be good ;)!

Year 1332
======================

We continue fixing with Yeruslan county. This year was really barren in notes. Shouldn't have rushed so many years but well here we are. I remember that due to lack of action going on I did focus on technology section of game and here are the results:
IJene9K.jpeg

Slowly filling out Culture technology part. Military might be an issue.

Despite what the screenshot claim remember that we are inheriting technology points with Minor Viceroyalties now so our "Real" gain is higher. We do go up by single level in Skirmish and Melee technologies. Which will always help. Still I'm worried - doesn't seem possible to max war technologies at current pace. We really wanted to embark on that high learning dukes with easy inheritance back to us plan like 100 years earlier (when we could but didn't know we want to). As for most of the game we played high Stewardship + Learning characters and right now we are also needing quite high Diplomacy it leaves this technology type behind. Doesn't help that unlike Economic (with cities) and Cultural (with Bishoprics) technologies, this type has no +income building associated with it. Not sure how much should I war to get even at this size. We were building the observatories for +military tech points in the past but even with that it wouldn't be close. Jewish events aren't the answer either. Maybe if we were leading troops in combat with Scholarship non-stop then maybe we could be looking better. Still there are still some buildings in hospitals that could be built in personally held demense. No idea what the final result will be. We aren't looking bad though - for comparison Western Europe has most war technologies around level 3-4. At some point I will want to change capital and dump all those economic tech points to instantly max some county in the corner of empire. Tough call if I want to use our probably single change of capital for that or for invention event to spread those province modifiers lasting 100 years around. There is different way of just giving away your capital I suppose but the next capital is determined by in-game province number. Which will require some extra planning and checking to get things right.

Funny enough at this point access to Silkroad becomes somewhat problematic due to faster spread of culture. Going from us to Middle East. Never expected this to be problem (probably as most expected that Silkroad will keep on helping us to improve our technology). Still it is less of a factor that sharing religions as it turns out. So many people on our borders converting to Orthodoxy not only made it safer for them but also gave them better excess to siphoning our superior technology. Cool mechanic when you think about how it strenghtens your religion entities nearby.

Year 1333
======================

Last year for now. We are really unlucky with Business events! Whole part without getting "Tower building" after being offered alternative 3 times in last year. This totally blew out pass estimated 5-10 years on Business focus to get that prosperity event boosting chances lifestyle trait. Yikes! Yet we keep sitting on our pile of gold. We can spend a little I guess to kill boredom as we have more than enough:
Mpv5tCH.jpeg

Technology spreads just enough for us to pursue some other good investments. Those single holding levies are starting to get really big

With Militia Training Ground IV we are maxing light infantry building in castles. As always - I like building my building providing bonus flat number of troops before building % modifiers to levies. Overall most of the buildings in castles are on semi-last levels so soon we will be done. Probably in next part I will improve Castle Towns. Probably should do it sooner but even with all the province modifiers they just don't give as much income for amount of attention that this would require. We really developed into Feudal Meritocracy focused on appointing "middle managment". So far the results far exceeded my dreams. Still curious what the final state of this character-driven economy will be as we slowly reach it's final stages.

Our idyllic peace is interrupted by rude peasants in lower Volga region though. Our tinkering with micromanaging local governors sometimes backfires so despite still having "Crushed Minor Uprising" modifier (-4% revolt risk empire wide) we do have such problems. Sometimes I do send my Marshal to help supressing some vassal counties but right now he has other things to do (patching our list of generals or generating prosperity with Training troops events). Sometimes there is little time to catch such problem and this is outside my desired 89 county borders. So we have to put them down the old-fashioned way:
HCUCXtn.jpeg

Recently culturaly converted denizens of that county got uppity so we police them accordingly!

We don't even raise personal levies - retinues are enough. With all the recent wars and ongoing collapse of nomadic life in Mongolia there is not much possible sources of raiders instantly showing up in capital duchy of Perm. So soon the rebelion is over. As I inspect those recently acquired lands good progress on cultural assimilation is spotted. It's rng but I do help it by finding and assigning some 15 Stewardship characters of right culture. It also helps that those lands were already of the right religion. Do care about converting them ASAP because I want to shed those lands into another Komi sister-Empire. The less revolt problems they have the more stable they are as bufor betwen us and Byzantines/Persia. It will also help with our vassal limit directly affecting income. To smaller degree it also helps gather more armies as new Empire will get more troops from those not-de jure lands that we would on top of their independent Emperor having way higher retinue limit that vassal kings would have.

After few weeks I decide on smaller infrastructure project:
fj8ooZz.jpeg

Patching up not upgraded Stone Roads across empire.

Found few remaining level 2 Roads. It isn't as great investment because Trade doesn't work for landlocked counties and Disease Resistance for some reason doesn't seem to work (which makes it terrible as nothing secures cities that have higher disease outbreak chances). Still will take that extra technology spread. Most of the cities already did improve those buildings as we reach the part of the game where our baron level vassals are running out of things to built. Not suprising given we were appointed high Stewardship characters and most of our city holdings are generating well over 100g each year (half of which remains with Mayors). This leads me into another phase of gameplay - soon we will start looking into good inheritance gameplay pattern. When you think about it - it is really great as those inherited money are not taxed by game scaling event/decision costs with our yearly income. That would make for great use of our Excommunication after we stopped using them for revocation (cause wars damaged prosperity levels and those are difficult to build up in Arctic terrain). Pretty certain we can do this as after revoking titles we can buy favor from landless heir to ex-Mayor, execute imprisoned and excommunicated Mayor to then invite back his heir with favor excommunicate him too and banish to seize gold. As we will keep on rotating our targets I expect such process to generate extra 3.000 gold yearly. Or should it be every 5 years due to penalty on unlwaful revocations? Hmmm. I wonder if we can make different character inherit money and our candidate inherit title (not sure how Open Designation for baronies works exactly even though we discovered many things about it already). If so then we could be making 3.000 gold yearly as without having to worry about penalties from revocations we are limited by amount of excommunciations our Patriarch will give us. Still this is perfect scenario and remember that some gold most likely gets lost without me noticing (the same way we kept poaching investors in tribal days). For the same reason we are having to fight to get our cities from Persia back as some inheritance occured and put those baronies near Ural under Daylam suzerain :/...

Something had to be in the water during this year as we are once again brought back to less intersting topic of peasant discontent:
DTcOjPi.jpeg

Oi! Could you Chill? Also it probably deleted this almost full Cavalry Retinue belonging to local Viceroy (it could be ours! Argh!)

As it is quite late in the year we probably won't resolve it in this part but well we do keep on marching at once. This is one drawback of having mostly decentralised small vassals - it's falls onto us to deal with every rebelion that occurs. The best way would be to have mercenaries deal with that to retrieve that gold paid later but so far those rebellions are so far and few between. Also I don't feel up to task of keeping most mercenaries on forever raiding (and well our current setup doesn't exactly work for it). We have plenty of work already with various breeding programs and haven't even started to inherit mercenary band money. If I kept all the Mercs for myself then they stop siphoning money from foreign AI rulers. So there isn't perfect solution to be had. On the plus side I absolutly don't care about their manpower losses due to Siberian winters xD. At least I think I don't as I never spotted regular companies losing gold to reinforce troops. Bit of trivia also - there are quite few default Merc Band that are tied to counties within our borders (I think Cuman Band is one of them) thus are using our technology levels and religion.

Before end of year we do get one final news from China this time:
Aax3Tg4.jpeg

Mixed feelings - on one hand nice to see Han culture again. On other hand we had quite some currency left that now will need to be re-acquired.

Probably the last major upheaval in Chinese Empire. They might start becoming a problem once again if they land on Expansionist Emperor. Forgot to change what their new stance is but right now we have at least few years of peace, before we start getting squeezed between 2 potentially hostile blocks - Aztecs in the West and Chinese in the East. Will really have to start working on that Orthodox coalition to dismantle opposition just so we can live peacefully and not worry about invasions. That is story for another day though.

/Edit: Delay in posting this part had few reasons. First of all in last weeks of April I was running really thin after so many week after week postings, then I got involved in reviewing 2 boardgames (for some portal and then for friend). Between longer holiday weekend and technical problems with old (not used for this AAR) PC week was spent on storing old files in the cloud. Thus my motivation got obliterated. Still graphics and notes were there just waiting for editing (fixing grammar and avoiding repetition of phrases is part that takes the most energy out of me) since early May. Didn't put much effort in taking notes for quite few in-game years and guilt made me not want to post this to be honest x]... Should have split this part into not 2 but 3 playing sessions but I simply had no time thus I had to force play through few of those blank years with nothing to write (well RNG also was atrocious). In the future AAR I want to speed parts up so this is something that I will have to work on for better faster flow. So that's the story. But now this is out and I will have clear conscience for next part. That I don't give ETA cause real life might or might not claim most of my free time in coming weeks.

Everyone performs this strategy of sailing around Europe to naval invade from Arctic xD. No good results so far.
Must be closer than landing in Crimea in whatever calculations the AI uses to determine war strategies.

Part LXIX (1334-1342) New

Part LXIX (1334-1342)

Year 1334
======================

After 1.5 month since last playing session it is finally time to return. Had to spent quite a while to get up to speed. First of all we have 2 ongoing wars (one on behalf of our Afghan Orthodox friend from Poyaid Shahdom and other one being domestic Peasant Revolt for Cheremisia). We had troops marching so we will deal with them quickly. We also have some Nomad tourists of Uyghur Manicheans variety in Saur county (near Silkroad). First battle happens in Syrt (Bolghar duchy) where our 37.000 personal levies ambush 8.500 peasant besiegers with another 6.000+ on the road to reinforce.
DLwiRtc.jpeg

This battle is under the leadership of recently acquired Khazarian vassal in Sakmara - Minor Viceroy Khuterkin 'the Undready" as we are still plagued with lack of good generals

Battle begins promising with us mostly rolling defensive tactics and one wing that didn't is against enemies that rolled shieldwall themself thus not much damage should be done there. Hope some of our newer commanders do level up as beside Minor Viceroy Khuterkin in Center (16 martial, Defender, Inspiring Leader, Brave; +27% Morale Damage, +45% Morale Defence, -2% Damage, +45% Defence) we have Ashava 'the Clueless' commanding our right (25 years of age, 13 Martial, Level 3 Martial education, Trickster, Brave, Patient) and Cherava Ylvan (19 years old, 22 Martial, Level 4 Martial Education, Siege Leader, Strong, Shrewd, Cruel) commanding left. This should common run of a mill battle with us losing 55 men each day and enemies 178. Soon enemy center crumbles then their right and left last. Sadly enemies somehow did not reinforced further so we have to move army in pursuit to prevent them from taking any of our holdings in southern Volga-Bolgharia de jure kingdom territory. Would ruin our prosperity levels. Don't want that. As it is January the Winter is here (luckily only normal) and we do suffer some supply problems (37.000 troops on county that can support 31.000). We probably will eat some attrition as we move onto 2nd biggest Rebel army but at least we cut them down to 20.000 men total. Just in time to watch other side of Empire where we chase off guests from the Steppes:
K13rIiv.jpeg

Lately there were fewer Nomadic incursion of looting intent. Still I find them a good source of potential Commander training.

While we do enjoy smaller quantity advantage here we have overall better commanders here:
Center - Silvano (42 year old Lowborn Italian, 24 Martial with Brilliant Strategist and 42 Personal Combat Score)
Right - Vergava (27 year old Lowborn Komi, 23 Martial, Brilliant Strategist, Flanker, Hunter, Brave (+21.5% Morale Defence, +43% Flanking/Pursuit)
Left - Serzhay (29 years old Lowborn Komi, 20 Martial, Skilled Tactician, Duelist)
Out of note all of our Komi commanders are female and enemies have only 13/11 Martial commanders without any relevant traits. Despite that we still do take some damage exchanging 21 casualties each day for 18 enemies. Soon our center gets reinforced by over 1.200 local levies and our Italian Silvano gives away overall command to Mayor Biur of Karatal from under Duke of Tarbagatai with his measly 10 Martial. Not the best showing yet one of our greenhorns upgraded - Serzhay developed Flanker trait.

Back in north-western part of our realm rebels did run away from us. As expected we did lose 4.000 men but gave further chase. Having moment I did check my court and only 2 kids reached 12 years of age meaning need to appoint guardians. They both aren't much to talk about but one of them is Italian and might turn into "workable" commander if he gets Cruel trait. Overall number of kids in our court dropped down to 16. While our mind was occupied with fighting we still were assassinating through succession line to county of Irtysh. Want to appoint someone else there to improve research rate but will take a while. So far it is March and we did murder 3 Counts there one after the other so it isn't so bleak.
wwunS46.jpeg

The enemy is defending in the Hills so they are somewhat better positioned.

Battle is easy and we soon are done with most of rebels. We have only around 9.000 men that didn't participate in battle sneaking behind us to Syrt but our forces are delegated there instantly after battle and will make it in time to prevent any prosperity loss. So as we approach April we also get popup for Architect lifestyle event chain. Finally. We were waiting for it since at least 2 parts ago - Architect event chain.

Those event steps are really fast so there is no point in now going over the demense limit as there are few months of grace period before penalty kicks on. We are somewhat penalised already (47/42 vassal limit resulting in only 70% tax) but hiring Architect still takes over 4.000 gold of imperial coffers. On second step thanks to having 13 Intrigue we can not pay another 4.000 gold which is something I didn't know we can do. We could get cheaper architect previously if we had Greedy (which Business focus provides through minting event or expedition event) but then he has also worse chances of saving the Tower (IF it begins to lean) so not sure it is worth it. But right now I'm happy to not have to spend extra.

We chase after rebels up to June before catching up with them. So does the tower building event progresses and we decide to pay half or yearly income for victims of our construction project (better than getting Cruel on our not-fighting emperor that is quite high on number of traits already) and welcome second son into this world - Kyldysin Permyakid. Sadly as his older brother and heir was quick, our second born is the exact opposite - slow. Well no point to make him inherit but I pray we don't have to play as him.
ZGn5irf.jpeg

Time to put an end to peasant dellusions. Die plebs!

Another battle that commences fully within skirmish phase. No commander upgrades though. Well at least we ended our internal upheaval. Lost 600+ men while killing over 8.000 and dispersing close to 30.000 forces total. So now we only have Afghan war for Khozistan. Decide to assist with it or we will be stuck in this war which blocks some of nice events we wish to get. On topic which Business offers us "Burgher" offer to buy plot of land. We decline as we only ever want it to start Trader modifier to unlock other events (trade expedition, garden/tower) and we already are way past that point.

In July after inspecting "alerts" I realise something bugged out. We are informed that younger brother will inherit half of our titles when we switched from Gavelkind to Primogeniture everywhere some time ago. I check and yea - every title went back to Gavelkind. Something must have gone wrong with save as I remember my farewell to Gavelkind in the not so distant past. Well we still have plenty of years to fix it. Still - annoying :x... I guess that the price of playing the same save over 2+ years in real world.
33NEMnM.jpeg

As we are slowly running out of construction time it is urgent to start those upgrades rolling.

Given that previous round of construction was concluded (last level of Light Infantry and Archer providing buildings in Castles) I decide to get another upgrade in all 12 personally held Castles. This time we finish up Barracks for Heavy Infantry and Pikemen as this is the only thing we can do in Veliky-Ustug, which is catching up technology-wise (by Permo-Siberia and Suomi border). We are getting close to those 7.000 strong garrisons (if levies are unrised) behind 9.5 fortification levels. Would love to see anyone assault that : - D.

Rest of year is spend on managing relief force route to Iraq, arranging more assassinations and linking chain of steps needed to fix Mayor that just died in Ashli county (we marry our distant 28 year old cousin from our court to some Noble wiht 12 Stewardship for time being).

Year 1335
======================

Ok first year after longer break is behind us. We start by rolling another Divine Summoning (Theurgy event from Hermetic society) for which we do spent one of ingredients (better chances of success including 'Divine Epiphany'). At the moment we have 6 over the limit Bishops, 4 lowborn over the limit Mayor vassals and one extra nobleborn Mayor that we are working on right now. No kids need our attention so we are good to go. Soon Summoning Divine Being turns into Critical success - something that I was waiting for quite long time:
t3tjj8D.jpeg

Despite giving bunch of extra attributes it also has hidden weights for better event outcomes in other Hermetic society events. Which includes invention event. Good thing to have.

As our 25.000 strong host passes through Baghdad we succeed in killing Mayor of Ashli yet our Noble candidate doesn't takes over. Double checked and he doesn't have any claims and his prestige is positive. He was bankrupt so maybe that disqualified him? Not sure but we give him more funds and try again in March. Meanwhile our Afghan ally's situation detoriates rapidly. He put down one peasant revolt but national revolt in Arabian peninsula festers thus we might need to clean it up pronto after dealing with Zikri Bedouins from Hasan Sultanate. We have to tackle their almost 10.000 strong army camping in mountains. The bad news is that huge Jayasakti Kingdom (Kingdom of Rajputana) just wants to tributarize him and has over 60.000 troops to do this. For now we have tough battle to win on our hands:
mXnnbGw.jpeg

Our right does counter their left at least but those 2x Narrow flanks will sting. Negate our advantage in numbers.

After few days other half of expeditionary force joins up giving us over 26 thousand troops total against their 9,5 thousands. Despite not high martial values all of their commanders have some good bonuses on them and they can boast about their 0% decadence giving them even more morale. Meaning this battle will be bloody. Halfway through the May situation changes for the better as our center after losing our commander charges to meet with their Raid tactic which means now we are exchanging 69 casualties for 210 enemy heads per day. Soon they route but our leaderless center chases them off instead of starting flanking on other parts of battlefield. Then our right under Ashava 'the Clueless' repeats just described manouver to get countered with Slow Advance. Meaning we lose 160 men for 76 but are winning on morale. After whole tactic cycle she reverts to Slow Advance and starts winning. Which leaves last enemy segment that was patiently delaying (that nows bites them in the butt) - they charge and got tripple countered by our side, which instantly breaks them next day claiming almost 1.600 men as casualties. Then we obliterate them down to last man. That still hardly puts the dent on Zikris manpower but for now we trounced their army giving us few months to intervene in Arabian peninsula while our ally is getting his behind trounced in turn by Rajput Jains.
iVnH8bo.jpeg

Another (think 3rd?) tower built. Maybe this time it leans! Would really liked it to do so.

We also can rest assured as tower building event comes to an end. Was worried for moment as this Business focus pulsed during it and wasn't sure if something didn't go awry. But no. We finally got it. Huh now tough choice - do I remain on Business or not? Wasn't able to decipher if this event requires us to remain on it. I think not. Not sure though. It also has a low weight (2) so it might happen really rarely (given that it needs tower to be built and then decade to pass) given its association with single character. Some time later I did swap from Business focus for War. I really want to increase our chances as we can write another book. Every little bit helps and maybe this time (after almost 600 years of failed attempts) our Dynasty will succeed in learning the secrets of Komi Architecture.

Finally by end of June our Mayor takes over Blagovescen City that previously didn't happen as expected. Maybe previous was family related to poor sod we just offed and thus took precedence? Doesn't matter. We have to start cleaning up as we are getting absolutely battered from few vassals dying and vassal limit going even further beyond our capabilities which in turn hurts our income. Decide to provoke heir of previous Minor Viceroy of Sakmara into rebelion, as he is excommunicated already and has only 400 troops to his name. One of retinues that were left behind (3.000 Pikemen in Perm) will be used for this task. Just as I want to move onto next skullduggery ploy we lose some other mayor. Shucks! Well at least we can directly repair it as his court was still populated with noble characters. Just takes single assassination to fix.

Turns out we didn't make it in time to put down Arabian rebellion and our Afghan friend losses duchy worth of lands. Out of 27.000 troops to new Sultanate of Ali 'the Liberator" - 21.000 are event troops. After further inspection turns out there are more counties (almost 3 duchies worth) that Poyaid Shahdom lost. They are just disjointed. Well that hurts a little as those are 7.000 troops less that our ally could provide us with during future battles against Aztecs. Still he is on his way to becoming tributary of Elephant riders from the east. At least lest give him that duchy of Khozistan. It's one big mess.

By October we at least get rid of that Khazarian vassal. For time being given our 13/17 demense limit we keep that county. Will be able to flip it quickly and I don't want to start searching for high stewardship character and making another vassal. We also do fix another Mayor thanks to spotting high stewardship lowborn women thus our Mayors to be fixed are down to 3.

Rest of year is spent on siegeing out Khozistan duchy with our 2 armies (one under Siege leader). I'm working out how to remedy our huge penalties to vassal opinion for holding more than 4 duchies over the limit. As Minor Viceroyalty of Ob crumbles I appoint new Viceroy there. Identified problematic triple count of Sedysu - if we work him out we will fix 3 duchies. Excommunicated him and send Marshal there for better imprisonment chances but it is still only 71%. Get impatient and try to revoke him (because we havent in a long while and time is ticking). Turns out to be a mistake and huge Civil war erupts >.>. With our forces abroad (albeit Afgahs did lose to Rajputs and are now they tributary leaving them with just single war to involve themself with and it is thanks to our effort at 71%) and rebels (most Viceroys defected) with 60.000 troops. Yikes - this will be ugly. Might need mercenaries to get enough troops to prevent fighters against "tyranny" from ruining any prosperity. Whoops. Wanted to avoid just that scenario with failed imprisonment but provoked it instead. Really didn't thought that single triple count will rally so many of our vassals >.>... It's one of those situation where when player wants to reshape realm can't due to having even temporarily too many lands ends with civil war he was dreading
DCBVXmF.jpeg

Well it is a mess. Kinda bad that many of our Viceroys rebelled as well. Not exemplary showing on my part.

Year 1336
======================

I really did a mess out of things. Ehh! It's so difficult balancing how close to the sun you fly. We educate single children in court and move out to more urgent war related tasks. First we continue war for Khozistan. Across winter months we swifthly build up the warscore for our ally and by end of February we are looking at 100% warscore. Few days into March Afghans enforce and we can start moving our 25.000 expeditionary force back into Permo-Siberia. Meanwhile I was frantically organising our troops to avoid as many pointless losses as possible. Luckily for us - rebel side is even more disorganised than us. Our side manage to gather around 8.000 troops in the center of Sibir kingdom and keep relative control over lands next to Silkroad thanks to loyalty of Tarbagatai Duke located there. One silver lining is that due to many of southern nobles occupying Khazarian lands rebelled we can and will take over those lands to avoid as much destruction as possible in core counties.

With start of April we have to accept bad looking battle on Capital itself. Our only hope is in crushing enemies armies before they group up.
G5hjkN4.jpeg

Yikes. Not happy with how they rushed towards our capital. It could mess many things including our breeding programs.

Our side manages to route enemy center twice before more troops join. As we don't have enough troops or fantastic level commanders we can't break them through efficient flanking other wings of enemy army in skirmish to which we reverted. We could gamble on countering them in melee phase but they can counter us even harder. So I decide to retreat towards west to meet with 5.000 reinforcements. Final tally isn't bad - really more of a draw. Let's bank on the long run.

After winning enemies move further east. Means they probably move to combine all of their troops. Not bad but it distances them from my personally held provinces and gives time for troops from Persia to return. In act of little revenge I do catch 3.700 isolated rebel army in northern Sibir with 8.500 strong army operating on that side of Ural mountains.
jUzPm36.jpeg

Time for other side to bleed! Needed move as things can get hairy if rest of troops that just fought us in capital starts hunting this army down.

We get them good as they are leaderless. Maybe this will slow down warscore progression (-27% atm). So in such a manner we enter summer. Our troops are already in Byzantine Empire borders and soon will enter our southern recently acquired Caspian counties. In the east we do have to avoid 11.000 strong rebel host but manage to almost meet up 2 armies to create 14.000 army ourself. By end of August our Master Engineer builds Paper Mill province modifier in Kudymkar (+10% Local Tax, +50% Technology Spread, +1 Economic Tech Points) which is nice as this county has 4 cities. We also have to replace Minor Viceroy of Yaik. We still are 6 Duchies over the limit :/...

By November we lose another Minor Viceroy and Burgher. The second case is bad as didn't notice that in 1331 last nobleborn character died there too. Meaning we have another lowborn county. But at least our troops came back and we can reraise our armies. We are still down 13.000 personal levies that will replenish but right now we have numerical advantage (62k vs 57k). Rebels mostly moved to eastern half and there is a lot of them. They also start suffering from local realities of winter climate. We prudently set 2 different small (2k) siege crews to start siegeing 2 out of 3 personal counties of rebelion leader while rest of retinues that came back start besieging counties in Pontic steppe. We get lucky though as War focus gives back in randomness:
MrDszhf.jpeg

Ok - that I like. First thing we got was the thing we really wanted. So now onto waiting for another focus change

Year 1337
======================

To my suprise at start of year I do observe that winter did a lot of damage to rebel side. Their army withered down to 42-43.000 men as between bad supplies and demanding climate many of holdings in revolting counties are still held by our mayors (thus denying them further supplies). That's a huge advantage as we are dealing with that challenge far better by carefully and slowly advancing or operating with retinues that keep regenerating. We do take some attrition on troops sent deep into Komi duchy in the north but well that's unavoidable if we want to keep ourself save from rapid defeat.

Red nobility after taking some counties in Kazakh duchy starts moving west towards our retinues who was busy taking over holdings in duchy of Itil on the Pontic-Caspian steppe. That's not so bad as they do have quite well supplied route there. They involve only half of their forces in that objective. Expecting that move I started moving troops back. Started moving them through Uralic mountain passes as I was worried about their combining forces falling on our eastern 14.000 strong army. Rushing to help them helped us some men yet we still enjoy numerical advantage in this war. Albeit we are spreaded out. With great attention whole development is observed but ultimately we don't make it in time and despite correct guess and they do catch our besieging retinues (that we prudently prepared for such occassion with proper battle formation):
O2mARU9.jpeg

We get really lucky with Narrow Flank. That should buy us enough time to reinforce.

Battle is initially really promising as reinforcements are getting closer. Once we enter the melee phase we first deal with enemy center charge (sending them packing) but then we make the same mistake and charge to get countered ourself. Which basically dooms this whole battle. We won't survive long enough to all reinforcements (that travel in 2 groups to avoid attrition) and will have to gamble on tactics going our way. Once again decided to play it safe and retrieve our retinues before they get obliterated completely. Thus we get another close defeat.

New orders to various armies are sent and we do quickly spot blood in the water. One of more indepedently acting enemy armies is lagging in eastern parts of our empire, thus now we can ambush them with numerical advantage thanks to some loyalist armies arriving from Perm to join up with eastern loyalist army. As enemy just gave us battle with close to half their forces in Itil, we can rest assured that there are no troops nearby that could help him now despite fog of war. Thus battle commences:
aAd1x6K.jpeg

Luckily their best commanders charges into us to get countered after which we slowly mop up rest of opposition one at the time.

Thus ends another season for fighting and we retreat to winter quarters, while foolish traitors continue their tactic of trying to push through extreme temperatures and lack of supplies. Between that and us inflicting more damage on them that they do on us in their victories, the pendulum of war starts swinging heavily in our favor.

Year 1338
======================

Another year we enter with almost 70.000 troops to our name while Rebels detoriated to just 27.000. Things are going clearly our way. Remaining enemy troops are undecided for the moment but it seems like weather did the heavy lifting for their decision process. What about casualties (aka captured provinces)? Well we did take 3 counties to stop warscore progression at +3% for us and 4 holdings in Pontic Steppe. We did also lost 5 holdings in Cumania (Turgay, Tengiz and Irtysh counties). So the damage is maybe not minimal but small so far.

Somehow I do catch that on 9th March Mayor of Cherdyn dies and will need fixing. Too occupied with logistic right now so it will have to wait for post war time. Komi Noble Rebels suffer from poor command as instead of griefing us by capturing as much lands as possible regroup and push once again towards Caspian steppe to retake what they lost there. Which allows to have a pretty good control on this conflict as it is much closer to our center of power than theirs and we can orchestrate their defeat in the near future.

As months pass we manage to lure remaining enemies into one big battle where they do decide to cross the river to attack us. So soon we have combat with 23.000 loyalists against almost 18.000 rebels with another 9.000 loyalists on the way
VlLlmrL.jpeg

Battle starts after several units move into Itil. We get unlucky as one of or wings get too eager and gets routed but really stacked center first counters their direct oppossition and then powers through unopossed enemy wing.

With that victory, enemies are down to 15.000 troops rebels and we are up to 32% Warscore. Meanwhile our eastern force occupies last remaining personally held holdings of enemy leader. Sadly it doesn't instantly give us 100% warscore but well will help with that ticking warscore. We keep moving our victorious host in the Pontic Steppe to jump onto another rebel group that probably wanted to help previously defeated compatriots, yet didn't make it in time.

Before that happens, in July - Mayor of Gayny dies. Not great but what can we do. Also hermetic quest for ingredients happens and our Eunuch Gardener dies. We find 4 herbs by August and somehow can still use decision as this triggered through event. Will keep it for time being as we already know that otherwise we would just keep using ingredients from both pools. Instead we can keep that option to instantly replenish once we run out of this "event ingredients pool" effectively removing any downtime with no ingredients.
zUQO6M2.jpeg

Like our side chances here. As major body of rebel army is still running away eastwards, we can inflict even more pain on their ability to do anything harmful in this conflict

We don't give revolters a break and push into previously beaten army (7.000). Meanwhile our armies in heart of Sibir liberate holding after holding and by August we are at +69% warscore. One of those crews has to move to Irtysh county to recapture those for extra 23% worth of warscore and probably after that (with help of siege commander) we will be looking at concluding this war. So far we want and will reduce number of potential enemies.

5wbKaz2.jpeg

Damn we do keep getting tactic countered in this internal war. Hurts and is weird to win despite it.

After this battle red side is down to less than 8.000 troops. Freeing me of most of my worries about empire. Time to finish them off.

Year 1339
======================

As I concentrate on finishing this civil uprising by March we are finally done. Troops can be disbanded, traitors imprisoned and great cleanup begins. We get 24 vassals imprisoned which leaves me with just few Minor Viceroys remaining but at least we get rid of all but one remaining regular Duke in our de jure Empire. Given opportunity I go little "North Korea Mode" and revoke everything I can from people who can't refuse to do as much as I can at once. Meaning that we acquire quite hefty opinion penalty on those few who remember for next 5 years. We also rise up to 17 (!) duchies and 54 holdings overall:

Well it seems that despite being really unhappy about all this, we did get a good haul from being able to restructure lot of realm.

Not sure if I should wait for penalty to taxes or just expand our 3309 piety on "Invite Holy Men". There is this idea of settling as many Quick/Genius Komi characters to help with breeding program empire wide. That would also be well... Quite amazing. Just imagine realm ruled at county/duchy levels by intelectually superior specimens. At least in short term it would help. But I'm not sure if I have enough piety. Thus I start inviting holy men, fishing for Quick/Genius characters and saving few high learning characters without them. Some who are quite advanced in years as potential replacement for future viceroys, younger high learning characters to make bulk of replaced counts (as we want them to produce offspring of their own). After spending close to 1000 piety (40x Invite the Holy Man) I give up as sometimes it can take up to 8 times before we get those genes going and at this point I'm maybe half done. There are also vassals in previously Khazarian Pontic-Caspian steppe area to replace and for them we need high stewardship (15+) to ensure highest odds of converting provinces. Which in turn will get rid of altaic culture that likes to generate nomadic hosts while under same culture rule but in our case it means higher revolt risk if not converted.

As I let time slowly tick, we do get invitation to Grand Debate organized by one of our Hermetic societies. Having nothing better to do I decide to participate (well it doesn't cost us):
LMfhX2P.jpeg

Not sure if worth it as rewards are meager and well it does flags our character as "busy" thus making him unable to roll for other events happening

Some time after I'm done. Damn we really accrued a lot of penalty. So much in fact that our not replaced baron level vassals hate us more than it takes to decide to not pay us any taxes for next 5 years. Well that stings. That around 25.000 gold that we will be missing. On other hand we did around 100 years of revocations at once so maybe the trade off will be worth it in the long run. Sometimes aggresively reshaping the realm is the way to go. Especially as this playthrough is slowly running out of time. On topic which we are slowly approaching 30+ years of current Emperor reign and so far we had no prosperity events. On average we should have 1 already and be fishing for another :/ That's a bad sign. Our administrative effort put us at least within demense and vassal limits. Had to trim the court though. Probably due to us deleting many court, their previous denizens moved to ours. At the moment we have 126 courtiers which is way too much.
wr8Rx6W.jpeg

Screenshot at the highest point of titles held during whole process. We should be stable despite that as new half of realm loves us. Few next years will suffer in taxation

Our income plummeting isn't the end of world - we can use this as discount on any costs scaling with income. Prosperity event happening here would be really nice. Beside that it isn't as this money is vanishing into void - it will remain in the pockets of our City Mayors. Possible to retrieve later and maybe allow some of them to upgrade their holdings quicker in meantime. We still have around 1.000 income per year and we have healthy surplus of around 50.000 gold in the treasury. Given all that now is quite good time to start another endevaour:
XcPCUl5.jpeg

My plan comes together - now that we have as many traits stacking odds in our favor we can try book rng

I'm not sure what I will take when it comes to book intervention event. Our Steward won't help us (not that we need it) but the real question is if we need to lower to quality of book to avoid getting another (4th I think?) copy of "Fishing with Angle" Q4 Stewardship book. This isn't the end of book related news as we get another crack at "Lost Book" event. So we send another courtier to retrieve some work detailing Roman Architecture. First we inspect both candidates and send one that is slightly more trustworthy. With pockets heavy with bribe just to ensure loyalty ; ).

On 5th of October our Marshal fires another recruitment drive in Kolva for that sweet +6 prosperity points there. The prosperity level doesn't budge yet.

Then on 21st of December we get update from book hunter - she found it and safely transported home. Wow. Luck finally smiled on us to beat that 50-50% chance roll (think this is at least 4th attempt). Will gladly use it soon as another construction discount is still worth hundreds of thousand gold coins.

Year 1340
======================

Finally slower year that we can spend on catching up with domestic affairs. First lets look through our baron vasssals. Counted 6 over the demense limit bishops (not suprising as we weren't tending to them in ages - we were pre occupied with other matters) and 7 mayors. One Mayor that is about to get messed up was also spotted. Thus we can prevent him from joining other 6 lowborns city courts. On the plus side - 2 of those lowborn courts are bound due to marrying our family members to revert to highborn status (making them much easier to replace) sooner or later. Still need some time and difficult decision about assassinating (it can be really tricky if we get caught). Number of kids in court raised up to 34 (probably due to us inheriting courtiers from abolished courts). We also trimmed down our court down to 71 characters. Suprisingly we only have 6 marriages in court (3 noble and 3 lowborn). We make 2 more marriages and then wait some time as I remember that before end of last year I just send some offers to few mayors (and you can promise the same person to 2 different people by accident).

On 10th of January we visit Primal Taiga to get our skin treatment in "Fountain of Youth" (-2 years of Emperor age). Then we succeed at marrying 2 mayors and offsetting some of our current woes. Sadly before end of month our finally secured Architecture book turns out to be a forgery. I'm completely not familiar with this event chain so I don't know if it was mistake to read it. Damn! (After studying game file it doesn't seem so. There doesn't seem to be a way of avoiding this "plagiarism check")
5CIJCSv.jpeg

Why can't we have nice things =.=?

This endandered older mayor we just spotted won't accept any marriage except to our talented 19 years old niece. Oh well better now than later - maybe we will extract her somehow later. As time passes to February we lose our Scholar-Bureacrat at the ripe old age of 65. We have 0 grace with new Wei Empire and it is high time to start some talks with them.

After sending some invitation across Europe I end with Eunuch that gives us in return 690 grace with Wei Empire. That's the best I can do given that current young emperor likes cultures that just got obliterated by Aztecs : - )"... We also acquire enough plot power across spring and summer to enforce revocation of Tobol county. I do push it again despite it probably needing us to besiege something - not gonna sugarcoat it: I'm counting that because that triple count of Mordva just declared war on Suomi empire entagled in civil war he might back off (with our troops already in place). Well he didn't so we have mini-civil war.
hCw2iZc.jpeg

Will allow us to get rid of another multi-county vassal that has 26 intrigue making him difficult to deal with otherwise.

Meanwhile some nomads do arrive by Silkroad in Saur. Didn't catch beginning of battle in time but they somehow dealt with our center :V... Rest of army dealth with them but I don't expect such difficulties at this stage of the game. Emperor Arnaz gathers reviews for his theorem written at the start of year and we get that extra +2 Learning (we also declined mission to raid someone lab few months ago).

Changed my war tactic and settled for not besieging everything. We can slowly tick warscore with Tobol alone and just smash rebel armies repeatedly. Not in a hurry for another "Lost Book" event after recent fiasco.

Year 1341
======================

We marry some more courtiers and amount of spouses in our court drastically increases. Up to 23 marriages (including imperial marriage) resulting in court size of 86. We do have imported 2 Ashkenazis that already converted and I snatched 2 really high stewardship monks from Irtysh Bishopric. Spotted that we have courtier named Glitterhoof that is 18 years old female horse. So that legend finally made it to us. We could do something funny with him but I don't think it is particularly worth the effort in this AAR. We also get an merchant caravan traveling to "Hindustan" that leaves 19 Martial Eunuch Commander with Cruel, Unyielding and Organizer. Quite the combination of utility and combat prowess.

Our forces catched some bigger chunk of Mordvan rebels by end of January but didn't SS it. Well we just won easily. Then as winter passes we captured Tobol and county of Illyinsk resulting in deleveling prosperity in both (sad!). Then we import some more skilled lowborns to alleviate lack of skill among over the demense limit mayors and have another battle with Mordvan rebels in May:
SNGXb95.jpeg

Such battles are good way to avoid siegeing. Also it will prevent this vassal from messing up Suomi empire (we don't want those lands back!)

After that resounding victory we are looking at 81% warscore by August. Our court also increases in size with more lowborn kids. Things are starting to look up! Sadly by end of September our previously spotted Mayor dies (which was expected) and our setup un Cukataw falls apart as our Niece is returned to our court. Have now some decision and upon checking I send her as concubine to Wei empire. Reason? It gives us exactly enough grace to get back new Scholar-Bureaucrat for those construction discounts. Albeit with heavy heart (we could use her to fix another lowborn city) I think this will provide us with bigger benefits
xEzHZJK.jpeg

At least for next 30 years we will have those construction modifiers.

Just as we are breaching 90% warscore and troops are sent to fight off Mordvans troops we lose our Minor Viceroy in Bandja. New one is elected, married to barren woman and we can look into another battle again:
pqv07xF.jpeg

Soon it will be over. More of formality and dice roll for prosperity preservation than anything else this war.

Enemies decide to charge and finally our oldest traitless Italian general can prove his mettle. He utilises Pike Column Advance tactic and massacres opposing center after which he helps our left while right charges enemies, which despite countering their tactics crumble under pressure. This allows me to conclude this war and also revoke one extra county on top of getting Tobol back. With that I take Mordva to settle out whole duchy (leaving cranky loser only with Illyinsk in Veliky-Ustug duchy). Tobol and Burtasy go to new lucky men while Mordva as always is given to older learned courtier married to barren wife. Commited mistake - picked someone that has a daughter. So before end of year our scheme slot is finally opened for previously gifted new Minor Viceroy of Mordva.

Year 1342
======================

Well onto last year for this part. We still have 8 mayors over the limit albeit 3 are in process of being repaired. Not much court maintenance but I did invite 4 high stewardship lowborn women to start fixing city mess. For now we will roll assassinations until we get someone decent (10+ Stewardship) to get rid of penalties alltogether. Then we will start worrying about getting them into highborn hands again. Change Emperor's War focus (we got everything we wanted) into Rulership focus. It can give us diligent and works with topic for writing the book. Could go back to Business but there isn't much to be gained beside modifiers (and greedy trait). Finger crossed we get that leaning tower anyway. With low weight of events in Rulership we might see different events happen and we had quite a few different events already. This is also good moment to start another round of constructions in castles:
QJ2VPU8.jpeg

While I would rather do Stables and Castle Town, uniformily upgrading the same building pleases my esthetic sense.

Year is relatively peaceful beside us murdering 2 Mayors. Rulership gives us depression that we cure with potion of eudaimonia. Tranquility lasts until October when first 4.000 Khazarian looters enter in western parts of our empire (Cheremisia) and then another 2.000 band pops up in Mordva. Our troops are mustered and sent (11.000 retinues) to deal with them. Quite a battle as we suffer Major River crossing penalty and enemy has hills:
jJYCOPv.jpeg

Unexpected Khazarian incursion into western Perm kingdom.

During this battle, our vassal dealt with other intruders so before end of year we are in the clear. There is also interesting development as our Minor Viceroy of Komi passed away, leaving titles to his 11 year old Permyakid daughter. This can potentially lead to non-Permyakid rulling, allowing assassination without kinslaying risk to finally sort out that double county vassal. Taking overr her Kozvax county in duchy of Komi would also be good way to spent our 1 per lifetime capital change to pump all economic technology points we are hoarding after maxing our capital. Further plans will have to await next part as we just run out of time alloted for this chapter.

You could try to find a way (console commands for example) to give Glitterhoof a city or bishopric, for the memes!

I remember and old AAR "From Norse to Horse" that managed to replace all humans with horses (there was some console and gamesave editing)

Thank you for displaying your wonderful knowledge of the game. My personal method of min-maxing is to minimize my effort while maximizing my storytelling (even if I only tell the story to myself). I have twice got the blabber-mouth mother who makes a bastard out of her legitimate daughter and both times has led to wonderful storylines. You dive deep into battles looking at tactics and daily causalities while I look at the result and rage at Paradox for the numbers being off (because of rounding).

May I send you a PM with questions from my recent games for your thoughts and ideas. Thank you

Welcome to Komi'mpany @dmurgell ! Glad to have you here :)

I like your take @Midnite Duke - always was fan of people min-maxing their own fun. Of course you can send me question :) No promises that I know the answers though! At the very least I can respond with how I would tackle your issues.

Some of things present in this AAR occured because it is AAR. Changed how I play and how I described the events. At some point I asked myself how can tell stories better with screenshots. I'm not happy with just final battle screen because it sometimes hides how battle truly went (ups and downs). From my experience with strategy games, casualty ratios is the metric people often use to gauge battles/wars. Could use morale but I find it less telling. We also were in quite peculiar position when initially fighting Nomads as (one of the weakest de jure) Tribal Empire. Needed that edge. Wanted that edge even (so we could progress faster). So I kept paying attention to it. Lately I had fun with training our own different culture (Scottish, Italian) commanders and it was new for me (usually just invited whoever I needed). Makes this mostly gameplay AAR somewhat more character focused.

Didn't anticipate so many battlesas I mostly dislike battles in this AAR (well last parts were my mistake as I accidentally fired civil wars). The most interesting aspect of them right now is salvaging situation in avoiding prosperity loss and squeezing them as efficiently as possible together so we can be at peace for longer. Still would rather have peace and both time and energy as player to focus on improving economy. Trying new things, managing vassals, calculating bigger construction projects. Thinking about traits you take and long term implications of them. Once I got into nitty-gritty of this it turned out to be much more tough decision making. As with randomness there are no clearly correct answers. Which is a plus.

For last few months I was also thinking about potential future CK2 AAR's and how to approach them. Definetely will speed thing up (thinking about going from 8 years to 20 years per part) and probably play later dates (at least 936 but probably 1066). Cause this AAR become quite massive and might be a hurdle for people to get into (I myself quite like AAR's that run for around half a year). Can't fully work out how to squeeze so many years into single part without making it as long but still being able to show decision making and how complex thought process can be. What lead me to certain choices and especially mistakes. Showing this alternative cost for each option and how important but also involving adapting on the fly is.
Slowly growing warmer to idea of more story elements in AAR as this might help generalize chapters. Was somewhat hostile to them as I oftem consider them being not truthful reflection of game state (something that many YT strategy content creators suffer from: "They say A is happening on screen and any veteran player sees it's clearly B happening"). Game itself provides plenty of stories if one pays attentions. I'm quite torn on formatting as I like my year by year approach. It showes reality of game which is great for anyone who wants to learn. Having myself wondered many times if I'm doing "good enough" or following some advice. Yet it might be too detailed and might need to be axed for lenght goal.
