A Russian Revolution Forum Game

inline-graphic013001.jpg

Hello and welcome to my first forum game! Inspired by Frymonmon's "Crisis in the ______" and baboushreturns' "Fallout Realism: Vault 191" games, this forum game will focus on the politics of the Russian Provisional Government. However, warfare will also play a role in the game, in the form of battles, rebellions, and coups. Players will take on the role of a historical character or will create their own character. Characters are divided into two different groups: Politicians and Militarists. Politicians are leaders and members of political organizations (examples include Alexander Kerensky, Vladimir Lenin, and Grand Duke Michael Romanov), and they can engage in the affairs of government. Militarists are military leaders (such as Lavr Kornilov and Aleksei Brusilov) and they engage in warfare. Both Politicians and Militarists can influence both governmental and military affairs, but each has a primary function. For example, the Provisional Government can dismiss generals, and powerful military commanders can rebel or attempt a coup.

So, given that this is a signup thread, players will signup for specific characters in this thread. If you wish to play as a certain historical figure, all you need to do is list your top three choices, and you must give a short explanation of why you would like you #1 pick. Creating your own character is much different. Simply follow the format below:

1. Lenin is mine. The most influential figure in the RL Russian Revolution, he spoke out against the tyrannical Czar, was exiled, and then came back with a vengeance. His ideology shaped the revolts that occurred on the streets, his very figure thrust Russia back into revolution. And in the end, he won, thus ensuring that Russia's Future would be Bolshevik. Who wouldn't want to play the man?

2. Kerensky

3. Nikolai Bukharin

I will take Vyacheslav Molotov as I really like how his life went, and what he meant for the revolution.

if not, some Czarist I will most likely make up.

1. Alexander Kerensky, Minister of Justice
I would like to be Alexander Kerensky because I believe he was an influential politician during his career, yet he could have been much greater if history had turned out differently and circumstances had changed. Also, as he is not that important of a historical figure I believe there is room for me to shape him with my own ideas, to make more a character out of him than I could with some of the more recognizable leaders.

2. Victor Chernov, Minister for Agriculture

3. Mikhail Ivanovich Tereshchenko

Name: Colonel Boris Artyomovic Dulov, OSG 2nd Class
Date of Birth: September 12th, 1869 (48)
Occupation: Colonel in the Imperial Army
Position: Militarist

Bio: Born the second son of the now (relatively) poor House of Dulov, he took the traditional route of joining the army in 1886 while his older brother Yuri inherited the barony and his younger brother Artyom joined the clergy. His father's connections allowed him to enter the Officer Corps immediately, whereas he was promoted to the position of Captain and bounced between duties in Turkestan, Kronstadt, Warsaw and St. Petersburg (where he attended [and graduated with honours] from the Nicholas General Staff Academy) until being transferred to the Manchurian Front in 1903. During the Russo-Japanese War, he served under the First Manchurian Army, and came to national attention between 29th and 30th of August, 1904 for bravely repelling intense Japanese assaults on the railroad junction of Liaoyang. One of the only examples of Russian success during the war, Dulov was honoured by receiving the Order of Saint George, Second Class from Tsar Nicholas II along with a promotion to Colonel.

During the Revolution of 1905, Colonel Dulov was commissioned with putting down the naval mutiny in Vladivostok, which he did successfully. However when the Trans-Baikal Railroad was seized by strikers, Dulov was tasked on retrieving it "at all costs". Using a rather ingenious scheme of having strawmen drop off large amounts of vodka at the striker's camp, Dulov quickly stormed the camp in the middle of the night. He then defended the Trans-Siberian railroad during the rest of the revolution, staying out of the limelight. He was stationed in Vladivostok during the course of the First World War, forgotten and discontent.

Titles: Ensign - (1886-1888)
Staff Captain - (1888-1890)
Captain - (1890-1892)
Alumni of Nicholas General Staff Academy - (1892-present)
Major - (1892-1904)
Lieutenant Colonel - (1904-1905)
Colonel - (1905-present)
Knight of the Order of Saint George [Second Class] - (1904-present)
Naval Minister - (1906-present)

2. Prince Felix Felixovich Yusupov, Count Sumarokov-Elston

I feel that Yusupov's arrival in Petrograd could be an event that could help or hinder both sides of the Revolution. If I were to play Felix Yusupov, I could possibly be able to ensure that the Yusupov family remains in control of their finances and is able to in turn improve the economy of the Russian lands as they did with the lands they were exiled to. Ultimately, I would just want to spend money on philanthropic and economic ventures as Felix Yusupov and maybe become the reason that Petrograd will be the finest city in all of Europe.

2. Baron Roman Nikolai Maximilian von Ungern-Sternberg

Baron Ungern-Sternburg allows me many paths to choose from and is a character that would allow me to go anywhere with. Sternburg could go to Mongolia and carve out a new Mongol Empire for the Bogd Khan or even crown himself as the second Genghis Khan, or he could stay in the Caucasus and ensure that Russia will thrive in the Caucasian Mountains.

2. Leopold Maximilian Joseph Maria Arnulf, Prinz von Bayern

Serving as the Generalfeldmarschall on the Eastern Front would influence the politics of Russia quite significantly in peace and in war. While I cannot know what may happen, the Eastern Front will prove to be a very exciting place for players of Prince Leopold. If there is peace, however, Leopold could serve as the King of Poland, the United Baltic Duchy, or any other kingdoms that would be carved out. Helping force a peace with the rest of Europe by aiding in the war effort would also be quite fulfilling.

1. Georgy Yevgenyevich Lvov
Taking office as Minister-Chairman and Prime Minister of the Russian Provisional Government, Georgy Lvov faces a tough uphill battle ahead of him; he has to try and appease the people whilst also not angering the established elite which has not yet been shaken to its core. Furthermore, World War I rages and day by day the Russian Empire loses men and either victory needs to be attained or a peace signed. This to me seems like a good challenge and I am excited to take the opportunity to play as him.

2. Alexander Vasilyevich Kolchak

3. Alexander Fyodorovich Kerensky

1. Grand Duke Michael Romanov

And he is my only choice. If this position is refused, the WTO will close down your bank account. :p

I. His Imperial Majesty the Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias (Grand Duke Michael)

Well, it's an important time. Russia needs her Tsar and while Michael is by no means the first choice of... well, anyone, he's what they have at the moment. Time to buckle up and get down to work. I don't expect to actually get anything done as the Tsar, but figurehead-ing it up is fun enough as it is.

II. Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim

III. Pavel Yengalychev

1. Pavel Milyukov
Leader of the Kadets, foreign minister, classical liberal.
2. Nikolai Chkheidze
Leader of the Socialist opposition, brought Socialism to Georgia.
3. Irakli Tsereteli
Menshevik, minister of post.

Gotta love Georgians (Seeing as I am one.)

1) Leon Trotsky: I would like this particular character due to his chance for leadership, his actual beliefs and to attempt to overturn his real life decline.

2) Vladimir Lenin

3) Joseph Stalin

1. Nestor Makhno
2. Alexander Kolchak
3. Lavr Kornilov

1) Alexandra Kollontai: I would like this character because of her unconventional views on marriage, family and so on, and because I want to try to gain more power and influence than she had in real life.

2) Any Menshevik. I would be interested in trying to instate capitalism so the natural processes would lead towards socialism and communism.

3) Tsar Nicholas II Romanov - an overinvolved undercompetent man who was insulated from and ignorant of the public mood from the disastrous day of his coronation. He refused to tolerate even mild criticism and blocked reforms that would have aided the poor. Sounds fun.

((I hope this is OK.))

Name: Lobsang Toka

Age: 34 (born 30th January 1883)

Role: Politician.

Bio: A respected monk and political leader in Tuva, Lobsang Toka was recently elected by the Tuvans to be their representative in Petrograd. While certain members of the Provisional government (and a large number of irate Russian politicians in the Uryankhay Krai) opposed this, he was granted the position of Representative of the Tuvan People to the Provisional Government, in an attempt to signify a new, open-minded Russia, both within the state and to the outside world. Lobsang's long-term goals are to give Tuva a degree of self-rule within the new state, and to curb Russian settlement, although he is a firm opponent of independence, believing it to be untenable. For now, he has pledged loyalty to the Kadets, but he is truly loyal to his own people and will support whoever will give them the best deal.

Lobsang is generally seen as a curious outsider, as the natural racism prevalent in the capital still lingers. Nevertheless, his cheery demeanour, intelligent and Russian-educated mind and hard working attitude are slowly gaining him acceptance in certain quarters, and he stands poised to change the lot of the Tuvan people forever.

1. Baron Roman Von Ungern-Sternberg
The Last Khan Of Mongolia! Anti-Bolshevik! Who wouldn't want to be this guy? He's all around awesome, and it would be incrdibly interesting to try and replicate his feats.
2. Grigory Zinoviev
The main victim of the show trials in the 30s and purported author of the Zinoviev Letter.

Were I to choose an historical character, I'd go for N. V. Nekrasov. A prominent liberal by 1917 willing to work with the moderate socialists, in our timeline things soon began to turn against him. I'd be interested in seeing whether I could maintain his position within the political sphere whilst developing his relationship with the Men- and Bolsheviks as events progress. Of course, should events not go that way, he also has grounds for supporting the deposed royals' cause...

Otherwise, I'll likely just create my own character.
