Yes; Turold's history is complicated. But I will try my best to explain it in a way both interesting and clear.

On a side note, a couple of fact that I feel will spoil nothing, that will clear things up really: Turold, Guy and Eudes were Normans serving as mercenaries in Byzantine service. This first chapter is them returning from their services there to Apulia, where they were born or came to at a very young age, obviously. :)

That, and my story is a sort of complementing story to Alhazen's, part of this RPG of course.

But I have question for you all. What do you think is up with Turold? Help poor Guy and Eudes. ;)

I got the sense that while he was away his family or very close friends suffered some kind of losses or depradations; and he feels both guilty not to have been there to protect them, and thirsty for revenge against the perpretrators. Sort of like Odysseus. That's just my naive imaginings as a confused reader. :)

Whew! Finally back home gents. Long field problem..was way too hot. Anyways, should be back into producing higher-quality updates soon, with more images. These past few were written late at night on a laptop without any internet access. I would save them on a thumb drive and just post them when I came in to shower every few days. Back on track soon though!

I look forward to see what Lord Roger can achieve for the beleaguered Serlo and Bohemond.

Let us maintain, however, the impression that all this drama does not bother Turold in the least. ;)

I'm curious to where Turold will offer his service. Does he lead more men than those who disembarked with him, or is he more of a wandering lone mercenary. Does he hold land anywhere?

Yes; he has just arrived at his hold, the center of his baronial domains, which include the town of Altamura, as you can read in chapter II. :) I don't suppose his liege, Robert, will be all to happy with a wayward baron who has just returned home and not answered his call to arms? :p

Man, what a scheming, foul bitch Sigelgaita is! I can find no other words for it. When I first read of the battle of Durazzo and her feats there, I thought pretty nobly of her. You have completely destroyed this myth. Chapeau! :D

nice! I had to look up where Altamura was. Lots of Greeks there most like, could be a rebellious little plot of land! I look forward to seeing how Turold presents himself to whichever lord he does. Or maybe he'll go straight to Sicily and seek audience with the Duke himself! :D

Yeah, Sigelgaita is portrayed as an archtypeal amazon warrior type in history, always at Robert's side. However, Im not sure I buy into this completley. Firstly, their marraige was one of political convienence as Gaimar IV of Salerno was still seeking to use the normans against the Pope and the Greeks, and wanted to cement his hold on them. He was the one who granted the normans Melfi. and permanently tied them to southern Italy by feudal right.

Seeing as the normans crushed lombard rule and hopes of independence and ended them as a power forever, I dont think siegelgaita would be show much favor for them. secondly robert humiliated her brother Gisulf many times.

There is an interesting case from history, where in 1073 Robert was suffering from rebellion in apulia, and there came about a rumor that he died. The Pope wrote a letter mourning his death even though they were enemies, and sigelgaita quickly moved to have Roger Borsa elected by the vassals as successor. Robert was very much alive however, and wrote back to the Pope thanking him for his kind words. We arent really sure what truely happened in this circumstance. Perhaps it was a plot against the duke?

This latest chapter has left me hoping that we are talking of the backside of Robert's neck...

Final? We'll see. Politics may play a role here, as it has in everything else. Her son is precious to her, anything that threatens him can cause her to..'lose it' as it were.

I'm thinking of closing this thread down and just having all posts go into the main thread again. If theres only a small number of people contributing to the story, I dont think a seperate thread like this is really justified, and is a hassle for people to have to look for this thread when they want to reply. Feel free to post in the main thread now, since others do so anyway. :D
