I don't even know if we have any of them in that fleet that's joining in. And I'm not sure how many troops it requires. The rules state crew counts as infantry with fortification level 2 and half-strength armor, while boarding capable troops have double the shots from regular troops. But that translates to what? A 1 to 1 ratio is likely to win?

How many crew members does a 20.000 ton emotion have, exactly? Because we'd probably need roughly that number of successfully deployed boarding marines for a similar 20.000 ton enemy vessel.
Now most of these ships seem to be 7.000 tons, mind, so cut that by 1/3d, but it could still easily be hundreds of marines required.

We are more or less on the clock. The longer we take to clean up the mess in Harmony the bigger the chance they will either attempt to flee back home or get reinforcements.

I think we are better off securing the system first. Take prizes later, when our own space is secure.

The longer this "battle" drags on, the more likely that conditions will change.

We're going to be recovering dozens of components from the wrecks anyway.

Is it reasonable to say that "8 days" is probably effectively "after the battle" in real terms?

I mean, sure, ship marines in and use them to take any civilian ships we have bottled up, but I wouldn't delay destroying their fleet to wait for marines. Once the home fleet arrives, we don't have anything to gain from continuing to delay forcing a resolution do we?

Won't it prevent us getting some components, though, and hence prevent some tech gain?

We get a random selection of components, yes.

It isn't worth delaying the battle, Wagonlitz.

You seem to be treating this capture mechanic as if it were something that we can just do any time we want it. That's not how it works.


In order to capture a ship, you need to:

1) Have your boarding shuttles loaded with troops, in the right place. With the enemy capable of hitting ships with strength-18 missiles at over 200 million km, "in the right place" means "exposed to enemy fire".

2) They need to be there at the right time. Load the troops into the shuttles too early, and they lose readiness while sitting in the shuttle. Low-readiness troops are poor fighters. Load them too late, and the enemy repairs his engine and escapes. Ships do repair damage, remember.

3) You need to damage enough of their engines to reduce their speed low enough that your troops can successfully board. You need to do this without accidentally destroying the target ship.

4) You need to get enough troops inside the enemy hull to overpower the crew and seize control of the ship.

5) You need to hope that the enemy ship doesn't explode while you are fighting inside it. There is a random chance of this every combat round.


I would rather capture one or more of their LAST ships. Not their FIRST ships.

That way, there will be no problem of interference by the REST of the enemy fleet... because it will already be wrecked.

The battlefield is six and a quarter billion km across... from the Lernea jump point leading in to the system, to the Neutral Zone jump point leading out.

Quite a distance. That's a week or so to traverse it at 10.000 km/s.

For comparison, the circumference of the earth is 40.075 km.
