I don't mean in a better or worse way (obviously better of course) :p

But obviously game series like Masters of Orion, Galactic Civivilsation and other will provide some inspiration. Which elements will be borrowed from these games in one form of the other, which elements most certainly will not and what innovations will be added to the genre and hopefully will be a source of inspiration for future games?

Well it sounds a lot like Distant Worlds, but a little more polished and stream-lined.
EDIT: I mean on the grand scale it seems similar, in a good way. I should say I've never played Distant Worlds, though I've seen a lot of it.

As someone who owns and has modded Distant Worlds, Stellaris will be be in another league entirely game mechanics wise.

The main advantage Distant Worlds will have over Stellaris will be that the primitive graphics of Distant Worlds are far easier for modding, since all you need to do is copy paste png files. The same, however, can not be said for the nightmarish inner workings of Distant World game files compared to those of Paradox.
