Well, goodbye to playing EUIV with my aged machine...

I always feel like "sigh, damn" when this happens, because now EUIV will be a step back from all the complex work done in EUIII Divine Wind (and mods like MEIOU or Magna Mundi). It'll have to pass some time (and some DLC's or Expansions) before EUIV rises to its full, well deserved glory.

Speaking of which, Magna Mundi was very promising. I fell in love especially with the corruption features. Will you implement some of those?

I'll just quote this
Strategy Informer: Need to quickly touch on a sour note: Obviously the Magna Mundi project was cancelled a short while ago. Tragic, but the ultimate result is a half-finished game with what I assume are some good ideas knocking about not doing anything. Did you ever consider allowing any of the concepts in that project to live on in EU4?

Johan Andersson: No.

I much rather have a couple expansions than 10-15 pieces of dlc. Would be a pain with mods that require certain combinations of dlc not to mention the pain of trying to convince my friends to buy dlc every other month for multiplayer =(

Paradox make a number of product that are all very similar to each other and they have been doing for for a number of years.

I'm sure at first they would just start a new project for each product, and copy and paste bits from the old code. However as they have become more experienced at making grand strategy games they are almost certainly transitioning to a unified code base with features that can be turned on and off. They probably aren't there yet (though they are probably close).

So in terms of the actual code of the game I think that we need to see CK2 as the base, rather than EU3. In fact EU3 DW probably has CK2 code in it (the new map).

AFAIK EUIV will have similar system requirements to CK2, which aren't much higher than EU3:DW.

EUIV will be using (an upgraded version of) the same Clausewitz engine used for EU3. It will presumably be building upon the existing EU3: Divine Wind code-base (as well as other more recent Clausewitz games such as CK2 where their features may be useful). The developer's won't have to reinvent the wheel and we won't have a situation like the Sims series or Civ5 where features are left out of a sequel to leave way for expansions.

In CK2 it doesn't matter how many DLC they have you can still play them in multiplayer.

Engine

So is this the same old engine with some more tweaks?

When was the engine last built bottom-up, and when can we next expect this to be done?

By the way, I can't wait, EU3 is by far my most played game ever, but you got to realise, that when you are this in love, you need it all!

EU3 was the first game to use the Clausewitz engine. From what the devs have said, I take it EU4 will be based on the heavily modified version of the engine used in CK2. As for when they'll next start with a completely brand-new engine, who knows? Presumably when they feel they've squeezed as much life out of Clausewitz as possible, and it's no longer sufficient for their design ideas.

Building a new engine is a very heavy investment for a company. At the moment we feel we get a lot out of improving our existing engine rather than trying to build a new one. Just look how far our maps have come since EUIII. So our goal at the moment is to get more out of our current engine and so we can invest more time and effort into the actual games themselves.

Clausewitz is ever evolving and we are implementing big changes/additions for every new version. Therefor a statement like "same old engine with some more tweaks" is incorrect because the changes/additions we implement are much more than simple tweaks. We are not really limited by Clausewitz.

Thanks for the replies from the team on the Engine.

I never built one... so maybe I sounded a bit unfair. No doubt the engine is always advancing, and I think I own every Clausewitz game, so something is going right there.

Can't wait!

Do the tweaks/upgrades include more multicore support? Honest question as Paradox games tend to favour single or dual high frequency cores compared to Quad or more lower frequency ones.

My impression so far has been, that at least a considerable focus in development of EUIV is going to be trade and diplomacy. This alone makes it a new generation for me personally, as EUIII is still too much centered on warfare and conquest.

All in all, happy news. When remembering how many things changed for the better from EUII to EUIII, I can't wait to hear what PI has on their minds. Not everything went for the better, however, so hopefully we'll have all the good features carry on.

Honestly, i dont really worry about technical parts at all. I think Paradox is competent, and although i would feel better if i knew that they developed a new engine (im sorry i just dont like the "feel" of Clausewitz in some games), if Johan, King and co, say that Clausewitz is getting improved, thats all i need to hear. Im sure what we get in the end will be a worthy successor to EU3.

With that said, i only really have 2 concerns:

1.) modding - in short, this was already answered by Johan in another thread (game is getting more optimized, still wont be able to support too much new content added by modders, and maintain speed, but that was to be expected honestly).

2.) AI. Although Paradox made some great games in the past, with EU3 most definitely being my favorite game of all times, the only thing that prevents EU3 from earning the title of Best Game Ever!!! is its very limited and often incompetent AI. I really REALLY REALLY hope that when they say they are going to focus on quality (after lessons learned from HoI3 disaster), this really includes AI as well. I mean honestly, weve been complaining about AI minting like insane for years, and its still going on, i posted somewhere a screenie of Ottomans with 14.000 ducats minting roughly 40% of their income, and its these little things that somewhat ruin the overall experience, for me at least (some other people just hate when AI moves like 100 units in a single province and burns its manpower, or pointless random land grabs etc etc etc).

Paradox AI is 100 times better than anything that their competators have done. The diplomatic AI in the last EU3 add-on is, frankly, amazing.

To those wanting expansions instead of DLC I would like to point out that the CK2 DLC are better because

1) Can purchase specific features that you want from one expansion without getting features you may not want to pay for
2) Better for developer (faster and smaller is better then slower and larger in terms of steady income)
3) Multiplayer flexability not possible in expansions

I'm so glad PI is doing EUIV... EUIII is my most played game ever (with expansions and mods, ofc), and I play such games 25 years now.

My biggest fear is... please, PI, don't take that path Firaxis did with CIV4 -> CIV5, it would ruin the genre. What I mean by that is, more emphasis on the look, all nice and shiny but severely lacking features (cut out from a polished complex structure for no reason) resulting in shallow gameplay. I would encourage you to make it even more complex than EUIII was (--> mods?).

I'm so waiting for this. Anyway, you made my day.

Echoing some quotes from the first page.

I'm not worried about this at all, just look at the CK2 launch, compared to so many "AAA" game launches, that was amazing.

EUIV will be as well.
